BACKGROUND

My company manufactures goods in the consumer space, and we are expanding into more digital spaces.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with NewDealDesign?

We needed to bring an engaging experience to a topic that is typically dreadful for consumers. Since we were dealing with a stigmatized issue, we wanted to develop an engaging interface without making the subject matter too lighthearted.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

An internal research professional on our end first determined the tonal balance we needed to strike with the solution. They built and designed a final app that was about 264 pages, writing copy, developing the look and feel, and focusing on UX throughout the user journey. The app contains illustrations, and they took the time to go through the entire illustrative process in a way that was compatible with our development process. 

It was clear that they understood the backend technical needs of the production team. When the designs were complete, they handed off their work to our development partner.  

What is the team composition?

Eliza (Experience Design Lead) was our main point of contact and also did design work on the project. Additionally, there were 5–6 other team members staffed on the project, including a copywriter and art director.

How did you come to work with NewDealDesign?

I inherited the relationship but believe our company originally partnered with them based on their reputation within the UI/UX industry. 

How much have you invested with them?

We spent about $300,000 on the project with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

I started working with them in April 2019. We wrapped up the project in June 2019, but they stayed on the project to make the transition smooth for our development partner. They were on weekly calls with them to ensure that animations were built out on the right schedule. 

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They connected with consumers in a very meaningful way. Consumers praised the final app for making a dreadful topic fun. We received a lot of direct, positive feedback from users about the design of the app. That led to higher consumer engagement, which was our goal. It was a great experience.   

How did NewDealDesign perform from a project management standpoint?

They took the time to understand our exact requirements and seamlessly worked together to deliver on those needs. After handing the work off to a development partner, they stayed on the project to make sure the transition was seamless. 

They collaborated with the developers through Jira. Eliza was incredibly responsive in working with us and the technical team. On our end, we could check and provide feedback on designs through Figma. They did a great job of articulating the user flow of the app to the developers we hired to handle backend programming.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re solution-oriented problem solvers. If requirements changed internally or due to our development partner, they were quick to respond and address the issue. They kept in contact with the development group, getting them what they needed to get projects moving.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything. This was my first app development experience, but they were easy to work with. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be present, clearly communicate decisions, and remain accountable for the decisions you’ve made. They’re great at communicating implications to our decisions.
