The project aimed to build a complete set of systems for managing restaurants from scratch. The main product is a POS system that simplifies taking orders, managing them, and tracking employees' work hours. It also includes strong financial reporting features to cover various financial tasks.

Another key product is a payment processing system that works with multiple payment processors and includes low-level API integration. It was originally PA-DSS certified, now updated to PCI SSF standards. Additionally, as part of the project, an internal Cloud CRM was developed for managing clients, licenses, and updates.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

A clear indicator of our success was the rapid user growth, which doubled our initial projections within the first year after the launch. We also experienced a remarkably low rate of bugs and issues reported by end-users. Additionally, it's impressive that we were able to set a release date six months ahead of time and meet it. The team meticulously prepared the product, even with numerous changes added during that period.

Our initial impression from the interview was outstanding. We didn't even need to finish interviewing other candidates before deciding on IT Craft. Even without niche specialists, their team managed to integrate a specialized POS product swiftly and effectively.

I’m the head of products and business development at EcoSki, a climate tech startup. We measure snow depth using mobile phone and satellite data.

What challenge were you trying to address with IT Craft?

We hired IT Craft to create our website.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

IT Craft created our website from scratch. I produced some wireframes and gave them references to help them understand what we wanted. It was a joint effort in terms of collaboration, but the site was built from scratch.

After that, we had another meeting to discuss building an interface for the MVP. They built a 3D map of a ski resort in Austria and layered it with snow cover data. Users could navigate through the resort and identify the snow depth. The key technology they used was Mapbox, which provides the map's base. They also used AI and deep learning to update the map automatically depending on the snow cover.

IT Craft will provide maintenance in the future. They’ve put in systems to update the app automatically, but it will occasionally require manual work.

What is the team composition?

I've worked with 5–6 teammates from IT Craft. Their sales director organizes meetings and discusses prices and feedback. Denis is the lead, and I speak to him most of the time. Maxim is the lead developer with a team of front- and backend developers. 

How did you come to work with IT Craft?

Our CEO had worked with IT Craft for another company before and said they’d be good to use for this project. I emailed the sales director and had a meeting. We discussed what our website and logo would look like and had back-to-back meetings about our goals.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between €30,000–€40,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The engagement started in January 2024, and it's ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Internally, everyone loves the software. All our partners think it’s great and a good starting point. We still have a lot of work to do, and it’s only the MVP. I’ll be returning to France in the next two weeks and get the resorts' feedback. I’ve also received some external feedback from funding agencies, and they’ve enjoyed it.

There have been a few bugs, and sometimes, the MVP is a bit slow. As soon as I mention such an issue, IT Craft fixes it and comes up with creative solutions. There is a lot of data on the interface, so it sometimes lags a bit. However, they've resolved this in a genius way. 

Overall, what they’ve built works great and exceeds my expectations. We’re still building the actual product, and this is just the interface. We’ve got another team of data scientists doing more, and it’s still being developed. 

How did IT Craft perform from a project management standpoint?

IT Craft’s project management is great. Around 90% of everything has been delivered on time. Occasionally, there’s been a delay, but that’s going to happen with everything. They aren't sure how to approach a task at some points, but once they're sure, everything is fine.

We communicate well through emails and texts. We meet 2–3 times a week and receive a summary email every workday about what’s been accomplished. We also use Trello, where I look at the product roadmap.
Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?
Denis is an excellent project manager. He responds quickly and engages with my questions. He goes above and beyond what I ask for, is easy to talk to, and is friendly. 

Maxim also stands out and is incredible and talented. A lot of what they've done has never been done before, and he's had to learn from scratch. What he manages to do is impressive, and I don’t think the project would have been as successful without him. Overall, he's a truly smart guy.

The sales director has been lovely. She’s not a developer, but she’s been great at providing feedback and ensuring everything goes smoothly. She organizes and hosts the meetings. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

IT Craft’s team is great. Denis and Maxim are great. They’re both friendly. As long as I make things clear, they'll perform.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Most of them are great at English, but one or two are more difficult to understand. It would be good if they focused on that more.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

IT Craft is a German company, but the team I worked with is Ukraine-based. English isn’t their first language. They’re great at English, but it’s not their first language. You have to be really clear with what you want and explain it. Because of the language barrier, you have to be clear about what you want.

We needed help with the DevOps side of our business. We had to migrate from an older legacy system to a more modern infrastructure, and we then had to scale it up as it grew.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

IT CRAFT has helped us with DevOps and consultancy work as needed. We have a lot of Amazon EC2 instances running. However, our legacy system, Docker Swarm, wasn’t stable, so we first went to IT CRAFT, told them about our system issues, and asked for their suggestions. Then, we discussed the possibilities, and they took practical steps to move us gradually onto Kubernetes.

IT CRAFT has also updated all our servers. We often work with new products where we need proxy servers set up — we have multiple proxy server setups for various offerings. Their team is in charge of setting up those servers, autoscaling them on Amazon, and ensuring that those servers are always up.

We work with a client liaison from IT CRAFT. Additionally, they’ve assigned a senior DevOps engineer to our project, who is our main point of contact. Although we haven’t required it yet, we can also refer to their senior team if we have a more technical challenge.

I think I found them on Upwork, but I can’t recall exactly. When we contacted them, we had a call with their liaison person, and we then had an introductory call with the head of DevOps.

We started working with them in March 2018, and the work is still ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our main indicators of success are uptime and having no issues with the service. We’ve developed a new platform with IT CRAFT’s help, and it works smoothly. Moreover, we haven’t had any downtime, which is proof of their success.

How did IT CRAFT perform from a project management standpoint?

IT CRAFT’s project management is very good. Our development team collaborates with them on a regular basis, and we have an open communication channel. As we’re a remote company, all of our collaboration is also remote. We use Slack for communication and Atlassian’s Jira and Confluence for project management.

IT CRAFT is very good at what they do, and they know the DevOps industry very well. Additionally, they’re very honest and responsive, so we’re very happy with them. We hope to continue working with them for a long time.

We partnered with IT CRAFT once we have reached the MVP status of our offering. We needed DevOps experts to help us to further design, develop and operate our Managed Cloud platform.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

At the beginning we started to work with solo freelancers, but realized fast that we need a partner, a company with DevOps specialists which would be able to offer different level of expertise in the field. This is where we started to reaching out to ~ 3 agencies. IT CRAFT convinced us because their people approached with a clear, pragmatic and professional proposal how to move forward.

In the initial workshops we had, we analyzed the underlying architecture, the existing source code basis and processes. The outcome was the definition of the future strategy and the roadmap. We focused first on security, reworked the development and deployment process by using CI. At the end we ended up with a scalable Dockerized setup which allowed us to integrate fast new applications and their updates across our Cloud infrastructure consisting of dozens of VMs.

Our platform takes online orders via FOS and provisions applications (Collaboration tools in our case) on a customer VM through a middleware written in Ruby and Ansible. The final product is a VM running custom applications in Docker containers. All is centrally monitored.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Our communication was always fast and reliable. We used Zulip (Slack alternative), Nextcloud, Bitbucket, Jenkins, Jira and Confluence as our main tools to get the job done.

I wanted to develop a mobile app that opens that market of amateur athlete talent to a global level. The point was to create a user-friendly, social media-style app / marketplace for sports talent.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We initially conneccted via Upwork and through a series of vetting, I considered IT Craft to be the most suitable for the job. I had completed several interviews and reviewed several profiles -- and while IT Craft was more expensive than other non-US based development companies, what they offered was much more, making the more expensive costs understandable. Their portfolio aligned with the type of app I was looking for but I also appreciated that they had not actually made an app exactly like mine.

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

We had a series of discovery meetings to discuss our goals and objectives. They were very responsive to our ideas and helped to take my vision and put it in black and white. I provided their team with the discovery deck that I had and through a few meetings with the designer, within a few weeks, they delivered the first round of the iOS app design. They incorporated my feedback and continued to work on the app.

How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

I worked with both the business manager and the project manager most directly. I also had a few interactions with the Design team and front and backend developers. It was a team of 5 or 6 individuals at any given time and I felt very confident that each team member took their part of the project seriously and did the job adequately.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We have not officially launched the app yet but will be doing soon and I believe we will have some initial positive reception.

Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.

We communicated quite often through Slack and the respective channels and when necessary, both sides were willing and able to jump on video calls. We also did several check-in calls to mark progress and discuss next steps. I felt that I was a part of the process and included and the positive communication was evident from Day 1.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I am not sure this is what you will be looking for but I think it is incredibly significant. The IT Craft team I worked with were primarily based in Kharkiv, Ukraine (where they were from). During the current Russian invasion, the team had to move to western Ukraine and during this incredibly trying time for them, their people and their country, these guys did not stop working for me to get the app done within the time frame we had set up. Despite all going on, they still made my project a priority and that is very important. Their dedication and commitment speak volumes about what type of company they have.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

To be honest, I was so impressed with the work of the entire and their understanding of the situations that I faced personally/economically which forced the project to extend longer than are initial timeline.
