As far as the development is concerned, our sprints have been ahead of schedule; we’ve wrapped up each sprint before every deadline. For general feedback, many people think our app is intuitive. Its design is also similar to other apps in the market, so people find it easy to navigate. Overall, everybody thinks the product is cool and new; it’s a brand new take on what they’ve been doing. Meanwhile, there have been bugs along the way, but they’re not because of Ingenious’ work. The bugs are just part of the challenges we have to figure out as we transition patients in and out of virtual environments and brick-and-mortar facilities.  Moreover, Ingenious hasn’t only fixed bugs; they’ve also come with a creative mindset. Our goal wasn’t just to get information and analytics to people, but to get it to them in a way that could be used meaningfully.   The first phase was the academic work that we did, the second phase was to develop a prototype of what we were envisioning — which we can use to engage with our stakeholders continuously, to acquire feedback and criticism to make some iterative improvements on the web app. Moreover, they built a backend server to link up with our statistical analysis work on Ruby on Rails, and worked on the frontend using React JS.   We’re currently in a phase where we refine and improve upon the prototype, that we can ultimately launch into a larger study. What is the team composition? It evolved over time, but we work with one main contact who’s our project lead. We also work primarily with one of the senior program developers, but they also have other team members that we work with as well. I’d say the total number of people that we work with at Ingenious is a dozen, but we closely work with about six of them throughout the project.   There’s a project coordinator, a graphic designer, a number of programmers and software engineers, and their management team. How did you come to work with Ingenious? The CEO of their company gave a talk at the university I was working at and what they do just struck me. They view the software as a means to an end of changing and influencing behaviors in intentional ways, so that’s why we chose to engage with them.   Moreover, they were very easy to work with, and they were happy to meet with us and talk through the plan and processes. Their method of working, which is in sprints, has a series of deliverables that was very appealing to us. We knew that we were going to develop a prototype that needed to be refined, and it was exactly aligned with how they envision the work. How much have you invested with them? If I could give a range, our investment so far would be somewhere between $50,000–$100,000. What is the status of this engagement? Our ongoing partnership started in October 2018. **RESULTS & FEEDBACK** What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?  I have nothing but good things to say about working with Ingenious. There’s a layer of bureaucracy between me and their team that we have to navigate, and they’re always helping us make sure that my institution is getting the information they need to approve the work.   We’re constantly working within our team to test what they’re developing and put it in front of our stakeholders to have their feedback on it. I would say that we’ve had a lot of really critical and positive feedback, and achieved a lot of what we were hoping to achieve in terms of informing people of their recovery. How did Ingenious perform from a project management standpoint? Their project management is excellent and transparent. We typically communicate through email, Slack, and Google Hangouts. Ingenious also uses Jira to organize some of the efforts going on in the project. What did you find most impressive about them? I would also say that they’re very goal-oriented and easy to work with not just in creating a web app, but to create a tool for people that can achieve the clinical outcomes we’re looking for. Are there any areas they could improve? Honestly, if there were any issues in the process, it would probably be more on our end than theirs. They spend time upfront on product design, fixing bugs, making small enhancements, and maintaining the project at probably no cost. I think it all comes back to them being goal-oriented and the work they do is a means to an end in achieving the goals. Do you have any advice for potential customers? I’m going to sound like a broken record, but it’s important to be equally goal-oriented with Ingenious. You’re not just hiring them for a service, you’re actually partnering with them to figure out your goals and what you’re going to achieve with the project. However, I don’t see any weaknesses with the team per se.  --- ## Portfolio & Awards ### Denver Health The client   Denver Health was founded as City Hospital in 1860 to serve the health care needs of the rapidly developing city of Denver.    As a comprehensive, integrated organization, Denver Health provides hospital and emergency care to the public, regardless of the ability to pay.   Denver Health cares for:    - Over thirty-three percent of Denver's population annually; Denver Health sees nearly 1,000,000 total patient visits annually. - One in three Denver-area children each year.   The Problem   Denver Health, one of the major public hospitals in the US and the “safety-net” institution for the state of Colorado, was struggling with a limited adoption from their physician staff of the diagnosis and treatment protocols for diseases requiring antibiotics treatments.   Did you know that it is possible to influence how people behave through product design?   Ingenious is a product development and strategy firm specialized in applying deep behavioral sciences knowledge to the conceptual design of an idea. By doing that it can shape people's interactions with any product (digital or physical) and eventually their behaviors in life.   At Ingenious we take a different approach to product design, we design behaviors, not features.   The result By making doctors aware of the impact misdiagnoses have on their insurance fees, we were able to increase compliance by 10 times after just 3 months of the deployment of the solution. In 2020, the platform was used as a distribution tool for updated guidelines for decision-making in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.   Denver Health also hired Ingenious to create a solution that would help reduce the overprescription of Opioids. ### Fertility Pro The problem Assisted fertility is a key driver for the life of most intended parents, but the regulations turn the process into a cumbersome experience, generating anxiety for parents and a tough environment for nurses and doctors to navigate in. The traditional patient intake was a true nightmare for the intended parents. They did it, but only because the expected reward was life-changing. It consisted in literally completing and signing over thirty long forms full of very personal and intimate information in a process full of uncertainty and emotion for all involved. Is it possible to improve the experience of the assisted fertility processes through software design? The Solution Behavioral Design in Action Ingenious joined Fertility Pro to challenge the status quo. The objective was to design a platform that simplified the intended parents’ experience and to empower fertility doctors by providing them with the right information at the right time. Every aspect of the product is designed to minimize patient stress and keep their expectations realistic while meeting all legal requirements. Fertility Pro is an example of design in a highly-regulated and sensitive space of interaction that demonstrated how it is possible to be innovative in such a complex environment.   This project displays ingenious capabilities to: Integrate EMR & EHRs and hardware medical systems. Be compliant working in extremely regulated environments (HIPAA) Affect user behavior by leveraging behavioral design techniques   ### Loop Care The problem The need for physical therapy is ever-growing but has become highly fragmented and costly. The Solution Loopcare.io is a SaaS platform that delivers passive revenue to musculoskeletal care providers by offering their patients risk-free, virtual wellness and physical therapy alongside their practice’s protocols. Ingenious helped design and develop the Loop Care HIPAA-compliant service featuring a back-office web application for clinicians and admins to operate the platform and a mobile application for patients to receive care. It leverages AI to give real-time feedback, qualitative scoring, and corrective guidance for exercises and interoperates with different healthcare providers using HL7. Today Loop provides patients with better care by delivering clinics a platform that complements in-clinic treatment with end-to-end musculoskeletal programs. ### Medventure The client CU is the third-largest employer in the state of Colorado, employing a workforce of more than 37,000. CU has nearly 67,000 degree-seeking students and an additional 8,000 taking courses for credit. CU researchers received more than $1.4 billion in sponsored research funding and gifts supporting research in FY 2019-20 to advance knowledge, create businesses and foster discovery and innovation. CU and its affiliate hospitals generate an economic impact of $14.2 billion annually for the state. This does not include the economic impact of CU alumni in Colorado.   The problem If patients don’t take their daily medicines for their liver transplant, they’re at risk of losing it. In addition, they can experience a lot of complications or even death.  The solution MedVenture is a survival game where you help a castaway survive a chaotic journey while keeping your pill-taking on track. The game and the study targets liver transplantees between 16 and 25 years of age from diverse backgrounds. A game to change behavior. The game is part of a research project carried out by the University of Colorado ACCORDS mHealth & Informatics Core based on the insight that young liver transplantees who usually don’t remember their interventions are dependent on their parents to keep their medicine schedule on track. Researchers theorize that when these youngsters become independent from their parents they start to forget to take their pills, which could explain the increase in hospitalizations. Based on a series of insights and proven strategies leveraging behavioral design techniques, Ingenious worked with a team of researchers to design an experience that incorporated every aspect into a single unified experience that the patients can use to learn how to keep up with their meds schedule. The result The work has been published in a medical journal.  Ongoing work will focus on testing the app with patients   ### Planning Advance Care Together The Problem Multiple interventions have been developed to improve advance care planning (ACP), most of which focus on patient education and decision-making aides but neglect the social features of ACP. PACT (Planning Advance Care Together) takes a new approach to ACP by addressing the prevalent patient-reported need to incorporate their social network (typically, but not exclusively, family) into the ACP process. The solution Ingenious team of behavioral design experts, UX/UI designers and engineers collaborated with experienced researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine and Fred Hutch to design and build a mobile health (mHealth) application grounded in decision-making research that indicates individuals often make decisions with the input of social "informants" or influences. PACT provides empirically based features to meet patients' reported need to incorporate loved ones into the ACP decision-making process and thus bolster their social networks. This new way of interaction allows patients to design the social environment of their ACP process, with the intended goal of receiving the support they need and ultimately improving their engagement in ACP and receipt of value-consistent end-of-life care. Tech stack We decided to build a Progressive Web Application using React and Node.js so users could run PACT on any browser and be able to use the app even when offline. As with any application that stores PHI, the infrastructure and all the administrative processes are HIPAA-compliant. ### Creating a complete telemedicine solution The problemThe pandemic showed us that it is critical to have hospital capacity available for emergencies and necessary on-site treatments. However, in many cases, patients continue to go on-site when they can get treatment and care through telemedicine.A large proportion of the services provided in health centers do not require an in-person interaction with a physician. Activities like prescription repetition, ordering or interpreting studies, or medical orientation are fit for a new type of consultation away from the health center.The SolutionInfigo is more than telehealth video calls. With Infigo, users of private medical insurance can access and solve health issues in a fast and convenient way, in a platform that was built not to replace physical interactions but to support those that do not require it.The platform integrates with several EMRs allowing doctors to diagnose and treat patients anywhere.
