What challenge were you trying to address with InData Labs?

We were trying to develop a trademark search engine. They help us build the AI component of our search algorithms.

What was the scope of their involvement?

InData Labs runs four different projects with us, each focusing on a different search target. One looks at similar device marks, such as pictures and logos. Another transliterates trademarks from one language to another.

We explained what we wanted to do over several meetings. InData Labs then developed the AI components in the first round development. Once they had a proof of concept, we made some adjustments. We have monthly or biweekly talks where we feedback. Now InData Labs is improving the algorithm.

What is the team composition?

There are 2–3 points of contact depends on what we talk about. Olga (Strategic Partnership Manager) is our main point contact now, but I’ve also met their CEO in Tokyo by accident once.

How did you come to work with InData Labs?

I found them on the internet. I called them and spoke with Olga, and she explained what they do very well. We had a trial period, which went really well, and we went from there.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent $80,000–$150,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in December 2018, and it’s still ongoing.

InData Labs develops important parts for our software. What they’ve done is really good so far. We hope to keep working with them and improving our software.

They give us regular updates through comprehensive PowerPoint presentations. They’re also very flexible to adjust to our needs. When I need to talk about project management or finance, I talk to Olga. When it concerns the project, I talk directly to the developer. It’s very transparent.

It’s been very pleasant working with them. They do deliver results.

No, they’re handling things very well.

I am the CEO and co-founder of an spinout from the University of Copenhagen that is commercializing a novel anti-counterfeiting technology.

For what projects/services did your company hire InData Labs?

Following a initial application development by the university research team to support the publication of a number of research papers, we sought the services of InData Labs to help us develop a technology demonstrator.

What were your goals for this project?

Our goal for the demonstrator was two-fold: first, we needed a credible way of showing potential customers that the anti-counterfeiting technology was highly performant and easy to implement. Second, we needed to provide a convincing show of the technology to potential early-stage investors.

InData came at the recommendation of an experienced consultant with in-depth knowledge of the Eastern European outsourcing landscape.

InData assisted us with the following deliverables:

• A backend service which could register new anti-counterfeiting tags
• A pattern-matching algorithm which could validate a given tag against a tag in the registry
• A mobile app which could scan a tag
• Application hosting during our early ramp-up phase while we lacked IT support staff of our own
• Development and deployment of a web presence for commercial purposes

What was the team composition?

The InData team included data scientists and a small app development team supported by a PMO and Strategic Account Manager.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

Our ability to close our seed round and land our first industrial proofs-of-concept were made possible through the assistance of InData Labs. They have been invaluable partners throughout the process. Specifically, the pattern matching algorithm performance targets that we set out at the beginning of the project were absolutely outperformed by the product delivered to us by InData Labs. We set out with an expectation that the demo would at least outperform our research algorithm, but we received an algorithm with verifiable industrial-grade biometric performance.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

We had a PMO manager and Strategic Account Manager at our disposal throughout the entire project. Our timeline was rigorously managed and regular touchpoints & demos were scheduled regularly. I normally received a response to my emails during work hours within an hour and the team made themselves available for meetings usually within 1-2 business days' notice.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their competence in data science, machine learning is second to none. The algorithms and methods were extremely well-explained and documented. We were likewise impressed by the friendly and proactive engagement we got from every member of the team. We're a very small organization with a limited budget, but they always treated us like our problems and our business was of utmost importance. In short, we got the same level of service that a company 1000x our size would have gotten.

Are there any areas for improvement?

It's difficult to pick any faults with our engagement with InData Labs. If were to state any shortcoming, it's that their relatively low profile doesn't align with their high level of technical competence. This company really deserves a lot more attention than they've had so far. They're the data science industry's best-kept secret!

We are a corporate startup. We're relatively small, but we can access a larger company to use their resources when we need them. I manage our business development.

What challenge were you trying to address with InData Labs?

We're developing tools for the security printing industry and needed hardware that could communicate with users. The project called for coding, connections to databases, and a user interface.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They did custom software development for us and provided a fully functional app for our end users. They did a lot of work in the backend, but I'm not sure of all the connections they completed or the software they used.

What is the team composition?

Our initial contact was a business development specialist, then we worked with a project manager, a character recognition specialist, and a few programmers who worked in the background.

How did you come to work with InData Labs?

We did a search for potential companies, and we found InData Labs in that search. They were incredibly fast and reactive, and we heard back from them within an hour after our initial inquiry. They gave a very good impression in an evaluation, and their level of customer satisfaction was very high.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started around August 2018 after some early discussions. The last deadline was in June 2019, but they still do programming for us. There are still many things to do, so we'll continue working together after the summer.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We didn't have anything before, and this was the first major app we created. Our userbase and the product are evolving all the time, and each iteration is more elaborate than the last. Our next step will be to add some of the changes we've made to the client interface.

How did InData Labs perform from a project management standpoint?

They were very good project managers, and I'm particularly pleased with our main contacts. They worked day and night, and I would rate them very highly.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their drive was strong, and the whole team pushed their limits to meet deadlines and make everything work. Their strengths showed throughout our collaboration.

Are there any areas they could improve?

At this stage, there is nothing they should improve.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Give them a try, even with small projects to test them out. They won't disappoint you, and they're very open about what they can and can't do. I would recommend them to anyone.

We are a digital health startup developing solutions that help women take control of their health, track periods, and get ready for pregnancy. We combine intuitive designs, science, and modern technologies in order to turn a regular mobile app into a women’s personal health assistant. The application is called Flo, and it uses artificial intelligence for accurate predictions. I’m the CTO of the company.

What challenge were you trying to address with InData Labs?

Our team is good at mobile app development, but we lack expertise in data science and engineering. We needed an expert partner who could fill that gap. We are using a mobile backend called Parse, which was acquired by Facebook in 2013. When they unexpectedly announced that it would be shut down in early 2017, we had to plan a recovery strategy and start to implement it quickly. We decided to find a company that could help and came across InData Labs. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

InData Labs has designed a data-processing architecture which can handle massive quantities of data and support near-real-time analytics and machine learning. One of their tasks was the migration from Parse. InData Labs built a client-server API, allowing our mobile applications to connect to the server, and also built machine learning models for menstrual cycle prediction. It allows us to make predictions on irregular cycles with an accuracy of more than 54%, which is a good number in this context.

We worked with a manager from InData Labs’ team during the initial setup, but we had direct communication with their two data scientists for the rest of the time.

How did you come to work with InData Labs?

After a careful consideration of our options, we chose InData Labs because of the quality of their team. We started the search in our own location, and InData Labs is based in the same city as our team. They had a good reputation and specialized in data science, which we needed at the time. There are many outsourced companies in Minsk, but they are more generalist.

How much have you invested with InData Labs?

It was a considerable investment on our part. InData Labs assigned two data engineers who worked with us for a year.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with InData Labs in May of 2016. We continue to develop additional features which require data science and machine learning skills. One of our current tasks is personalizing the app content based on our data.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or impact of the engagement?

We don’t track formal performance parameters and mostly qualify InData Labs’ work intuitively.

We have more than five million monthly active users. The service load is rather high, with around 1,000 requests per second. InData Labs built a solution which can cope with this demand rather well. We perform a lot of data analysis and research, based on the user data we collect.

The business-intelligence system built by InData Labs allows us to analyze data on our own, without their help. Any complex reports are still being built by their developers.

How did InData Labs perform from a project management standpoint?

We’ve had no problems in this area. The communication between our two teams was done through JIRA and Flex. We also had daily calls and organized on-site meetings if needed. InData Labs met the deadlines we set for them, which was important for us. We mixed different techniques like Kanban and sprints. We did have strict deadlines at times, but for most of the collaboration, we simply had a backlog of tasks to perform.

What did you find most impressive about InData Labs?

They have good data science expertise. We don’t have general models which can be built by anyone, so we appreciate InData Labs’ skillset.

Are there any areas InData Labs could improve?

InData Labs has assigned two data science engineers to our project. We have had tasks related to engineering as well as data science and analysis. Having separate resources for these areas could improve the performance of the whole team. We are working on this and may come up with a solution in the future. Overall, we’ve had a very good collaboration, and I highly recommend InData Labs.

The project was delivered over 3 months in total, including additional work that was requested beyond the original scope. It was divided into two phases: an initial design discovery followed by full-stack development of the MVP.
In Phase 0, the team worked closely with us to define the user experience and interface design for a mobile-friendly web app. During Phase 1, they developed and deployed a functioning beta version of the platform, including the development of a landing page to introduce the product, and the admin panel for platform management.
The team implemented features for data importing, processing, and visualization, along with health analysis, personalized recommendations, and report sharing.
They used AWS services for backend infrastructure and delivered full documentation for future scalability.
In addition to the planned scope, they supported us with a full rebranding of the application, domain migration, and security setups.

The final deliverable was a high-quality, stable beta version of the application, ready for early testing and feedback. The work was delivered on time, considering the expanded scope, met all technical requirements, and laid a solid foundation for future product development.

We have an API [application programming interface] with InData Labs, and we use their infrastructure to receive analytics. Our platform is based on Java, Python, and Kafka. InData Labs has two teams: data science and engineers. Both teams work with these different technologies.

We then engaged InData for a second project. We have around 50,000 profiles created of popular people in social networks. We use InData Labs’ servers to track these profiles. We have a very effective infrastructure from InData Labs.

When we launched our company, we were familiar with the people who started InData Labs. We talked about what we needed and decided to work with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in April of 2015, and we still work with InData Labs. We have a lot of new tasks for them, and they also take care of any issues we have.

We were able to get our proof of concept very early and with lots of ideas and effort from the team. Outcome was really well, so that we continued the development even further.

It was a simple enough 'proof-of-concept' project and I am eager to get it ready. The project was delivered early, bug fixes were annotated, and questions for clarification made the process exceptionally smooth.

The single greatest part was they had previous experience in the field I was looking for. It was the most valuable and impressive part of the initial search.
