What challenges were you trying to address with MVM Software Engineering?

We wanted to develop a mobile app for Android and iOS with a management portal.

What was the scope of their involvement?

MVM Software Engineering developed our application from the ground up; they built it for Android and iOS. We initially shared with them a series of mock-ups in PowerPoint and a requirements systematization that we did from scratch.

What was the team composition? 

We worked with about eight people in total, including a project manager, developers, web designers, an architect, Scrum masters, and UX/UI experts.

How did you come to work with MVM Software Engineering?

They were well-known in Colombia. MVM Fotware Engineering had extensive experience, and they scored well in our hiring process in terms of technical expertise. Additionally, they adjusted to our budget needs.

How much have you invested in them?

We spent about $110,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in June 2019; they finished the project about one year ago in May 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

All of our clients downloaded the app. It was very useful during the COVID-19 pandemic because it allowed us to contact our clients through their mobile devices and generate reports automatically. Overall, it was an absolute success.

Their project management skills were outstanding. They had a solid methodology that they followed rigorously. We mainly communicated via email and in-person meetings. Additionally, we used Projects as a project management tool.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They stood out for their team’s expertise and timeliness, as well as the close involvement of the upper management. All in all, they were excellent partners.

We were looking to partner up with a solid software consulting company that had strengths in solutions architecture and enterprise architecture for the energy industry.

We had known them for years as they are market leaders in providing software and digital consulting to the most important energy companies in Latin America. We wanted to make sure we selected the best combination of senior technical consultants plus relevant energy industry experience, and they were simply the best choice.

We needed to design the Sectoral Enterprise Architecture for the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the industry sector in Colombia. The project lasted for a year and had 4 main stages. We followed TOGAF Framework and Zachman Ontology Framemork. We were privileged to work with John and their team to bring together a top tier Enterprise Architect team.

We hired a senior Project Manager, a Senior Solutions Architect and a Senior IT Gobernance and Strategy.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

At the end of our consulting effort, we were praised by our client. The milestones and consulting goals were achieved and the MVM team were an instrumental part of our sucesss.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

This project was intense and it required our team and MVM's team to blend and work together onsite and virtually every week. We created a very healthy team dynamic that helped us delivery in quality and overcome all of the challenges we faced during the project.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Their professionalism and the amount of knowledge they've amassed in the energy sector are fantastic. They were able to navigate uncertainty with ease and ended up leading several deliverables of our project.

Not that I can think of on the top of my mind.

I work at Empresas Públicas de Medellin, a residential public services company that provides energy, water, gas, sewage, and waste management services. My position in the organization is IT commercial solutions manager.

What challenge were you trying to address with MVM Software Engineering?

We have a software factory contract with MVM Software Engineering to help us specifically with maintenance support and the evolution of our billing solution. Additionally, they support us with updates for our solution, which is called Open Smart Switch.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The work they do is specifically over our platform, which has its own framework. MVM Software Engineering has been supporting all version updates of our billing platform and the different initiatives and needs we have as a business involving the platform. They also work on the Oracle database using SQL, and we also have web developments linked to the system, which are based in .NET.

What is the team composition?

We have a services contract so the number of people changes depending on the requirement. On average, we work with a team of 32–35 people, an account manager, and the rest are developers. 

How did you come to work with MVM Software Engineering?

As a public entity, whenever we have a project like this, we have to do an open licitation process. During this process, we evaluated the proposals of different companies providing software factory services. Some of the things we evaluated were legal requirements, operational capability, technical skills, and budget, among other things. MVM Software Engineering participated along with other service providers; they were evaluated and selected at the end of the process. 

How much have you invested with them?

We have a three-year contract for the amount of about $3 million.

What is the status of this engagement?

We have been working with them for the last three years, but we started a new three-year contract in August 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

In general, MVM Software Engineering's services have been very good. They’ve been providing us with the support we need to bill services without any issues. They’re a very well-known company in the sector, and are responsible, professional, and very attentive, so I don’t have any complaints. 

How did MVM Software Engineering perform from a project management standpoint?

They have a good performance in terms of the budget and schedule. As for means of communication, we're fortunate to be based in the same city, so the account manager visits us often here in our offices. In general, we’re very close and have constant face-to-face interactions. We also have WhatsApp groups where we can chat and solve issues immediately.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their support and knowledge about the business and billing process. Besides having the technical skills, they have great knowledge about business processes. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

There is an issue that is like a collateral effect of the software factory model called brain drain. I believe it’s a generalized issue in the sector, and we have discussed it with them. We often think about what to do to mitigate the impact of rotation. I believe they have to always be prepared to make sure that brain drain doesn’t have an impact on the services they provide.

I’m the CIO of an electrical energy management platform based in Colombia.

What challenges were you trying to address with MVM Software Engineering?

We hired them to work on software development projects. Our company is subject to a national regulation entity that constantly defines new rules we must apply, which implies updating our software systems to adjust to those changes.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

MVM Software Engineering helps us with regulation compliance processes. They update our software applications, provide support and maintenance, and are in charge of new custom software product development. Depending on the project, they’ve worked with Java, .NET, Microsoft Azure, and SQL databases. For data management, they’ve used Databricks and Microsoft tools. 

The team updates existing modules whenever there are regulation changes. When our platforms become outdated, we need to implement new systems that better respond to our needs, and MVM Software Engineering helps us. Additionally, they provide software development from scratch when we have new projects or need to add new functionalities to existing products. 

Since 2019, MVM Software Engineering has worked with the Agile methodology, so they provide a product owner for each project. The product owner creates user stories while we implement the methods from inception, developing guidelines and defining user stories for each sprint. Based on those user stories, we open the project to bids.

Currently, we work with 120 teammates from MVM Software Engineering in a software factory model. We have teammates in all areas, including backend development, database management, and cloud management. Other roles include scrum masters, Agile coaches, project managers, and administrative teammates. 

How did you come to work with MVM Software Engineering?

Our company has been in the market for the past 17 years, and another company owned us before that. We’ve been working with MVM Software Engineering since then. 

How much have you invested in them?

In the past year, we’ve spent between $2 million–$2.5 million with MVM Software Engineering. Since our company has been working with them for a long time and I’ve only been in my position for three years, I only have recent numbers. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in 2002, and our collaboration is ongoing. Currently, they have two contracts with us.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

As our regulations are very dynamic, it's hard to pinpoint a specific number or metric. However, we have an evaluation process that considers availability, personnel rotation, compliance with requests, and DevOps metrics. MVM Software Engineering has always been very well-rated among our service providers. As a mixed company, we have private and State funding, and we must meet specific criteria to hire service providers. We have licitation processes where different service providers from Latin America participate, and MVM Software Engineering became a key ally for us in these processes. 

Whenever we've encountered a team that hasn't met the expectations of the project, MVM Software Engineering has assigned an additional team to achieve our level of demand. 

How did MVM Software Engineering perform from a project management standpoint? 

They've been very successful in project management, as proven by the fact that we've selected them for numerous licitation projects. The team is great at adapting to our needs in terms of budget and schedule. 

We use Microsoft Teams as a communications tool and also have in-person meetings. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I'm impressed with how MVM Software Engineering dedicates themselves to understanding our business. They care about our business and needs; the team has learned a lot about electric energy and the operations of real-time systems, which has been key to the engagement's success. Their readiness and great skills to find resources and put them at our disposal stand out. They've had great flexibility and adjusted to find us the right team for each project.

The transition to the Agile methodology has been hard for us, which we've discussed with MVM Software Engineering. They could orientate us on how to adapt to the method faster.

I advise maintaining a close relationship with MVM Software Engineering. Establishing trust and transparency are very important when working with a partner.

I’m a department manager at one of the biggest telecommunications companies in Colombia. We provide mobile and stationary telecommunication services throughout the country.

What challenges were you trying to address with MVM SOFTWARE ENGINEERING?

We hired MVM for software development and IT consulting services.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

MVM was our main IT consulting and software development service provider. They were in charge of all the development projects coming from our business requests, which included developing solutions for invoicing, mobile communications, broadband, and TV.

We started every project by defining the requirements and estimating the efforts needed from our different departments. Based on those requirements, MVM presented a proposal detailing the number of people and resources needed. The deliverables included a feasibility study, a report including the code they had generated, a test certificate, and a project acceptance letter.

What was the team composition?

We worked with MVM’s upper management, and they had about three managers assigned to our project. We occasionally worked with up to 60 people from their team, including business analysts.

They participated in a licitation process in which they were selected.

We paid between $1 billion—$1.2 billion Colombian pesos (approximately $208,000–$250,000 USD) per year.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in early 2008, and I stopped working with them in late 2011, although they finished their collaboration with the company in 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

MVM was a key partner for us. They helped us evolve our development model, changing our processes and business ideas. We had a very positive experience working with them, and we’re really thankful for their services.

How did MVM SOFTWARE ENGINEERING company perform from a project management standpoint?

MVM was a great communicator. They offered excellent support and had great control of their resources. We provided them with constant feedback on the results of projects, and their team was always willing to make adjustments if needed. Overall, our collaboration was very positive.

As for communication, we used email and code-sharing tools. At the time, we worked either in our offices or in theirs, and we had a weekly meeting to follow up on the process.

MVM was hired to consolidate all the consumption data related to our clients and the target was the delivery of daily metrics and monthly billing with the highest level of accuracy. Information should be available through the cloud, in order to be consulted anytime, anywhere.

There was a purchasing process. Several providers were selected based on services offered, availability, market knowledge, and cost. Finally, the account was assigned to MVM. MVM showed a deep knowledge of the domestic market and regulations. The solution is developed for the Mexican market. In parallel, they offered different levels of support and assistance.

This is a platform implementation project, using MVM Energy Suite, helping in the daily commercial management. Steps: 1) Environment Analysis: Including the infrastructure configuration in order to get access to the cloud 2) Evaluation: Initial information upload, users and company key data configuration. Testing process in order to ensure the information reliability. Training sessions previous to the "Go Live" phase. 3) Parameters: Upload of historical data, key parameters set up. 4) Training: Several sessions with the personnel involved. 5) Parallel testing: Specific testing process to ensure the quality of the information and the results obtained in the exit reports and solve specific items previous to the "Go Live". 6) Go Live: At this stage, the support service started 7) Support and Operation: Daily use of the platform and having support, when needed, given by the assigned team.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The most important is having accurate information available everytime, everywhere. For the company and our clients is a key factor to get reports that show the data in an understable way and knowing that these data and reliable. This helps the company to produce the billing on time and receive the payments without claims.

From the beginning, there has been a very good relationship with MVM´s team, and continuous communication. This is the result of hard work on both sides and the engagement of MVM in understanding the importance of this platform, the company's key milestones, timelines, and the success expected in the exit reports.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I like their broad knowledge of the Mexican Electric Market and the regulations. Their level of engagement in this project. The support and the service focused on the client and the opening to receive suggestions to improve the platform.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

MVM is a company with a great vision and understanding of the electric market, but sometimes they use some local advisors for taxation and billing purposes; they might insource this part in each country and avoid depending on third parties. From my point of view this would take MVM to the next level.

We could finish the project in a record time. Normaly this Kind of projects demands more than 24 or 36 months. We achieved the objective in 15.3 months thanks to them and others actors of the project.
