I am the Dallas Fort Worth Minority Supplier Development Council president and CEO. We connect corporations and public sector agencies with minority-owned businesses.

What challenge were you trying to address with DHD Films?

We were trying to build additional awareness and produce two fundraising and recognition opportunities for our stakeholders. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

DHD Films produced several virtual and hybrid events for our company. We provided precise directions for all of these events, highlighting our needs and what we wanted to achieve. Then, DHD Films made suggestions to improve each event based on their past experience. 

The 2020 event was completely virtual and had over 400 attendees. DHD Films was able to complete production within one hour. DHD Films also did our hybrid awards gala in 2021, with some attendees coming in person and others virtually. In 2021, DHD Films also did our virtual business expo. 

What is the team composition?

We worked with Sam (Producer) and had access to the owners at all times. There was also a larger team that Sam managed. 

How did you come to work with DHD Films?

Often, we try to do business with our stakeholders before we open up a bid in the larger market. DHD Films is a certified minority-owned business that belongs to our organization. So, we hired them out of the six stakeholder companies who put in a bid. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested over $50,000, which is quite an anomaly for our organization because we’re a nonprofit. 

What is the status of this engagement?

Our work with DHD Films began in November 2020, and our engagement is ongoing.

The execution of the events was phenomenal and exactly what we wanted. We received a lot of positive feedback from event attendees. 

How did DHD Films perform from a project management standpoint?

DHD Films had phenomenal project management. We typically communicated via email, phone calls, and Zoom and in-person meetings. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

DHD Films leads with excellence — their constant communication with us is phenomenal.

I have nothing for DHD Films to improve; I’m totally satisfied with their work.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

DIRTT Environmental Solutions is a construction company thet leverages industrialized construction. We have a system that allows people to build out interior spaces with materials that are more durable than drywall and metal studs. This system is also more flexible and allows for the reconfiguration of space that does not involve tearing down rock and putting it back up. Besides floors, we also have floor, power, network, integrated technology, and living walls solutions.

I am a content specialist in the company and I’m responsible for creating sales tools, project profiles, and written case studies. I also have a background in TV and film production so I’ve taken up with the marketing part of the business to help create case study videos and similar projects.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with DHD Films?

We had just opened up a new DIRTT experience center in Plano, Texas, and we wanted to chronicle its construction as well as show off the space to more firmly establish what our construction system does on a grander scale. Up until recently, DIRTT had an in-house videography team. In mid-2020, however, our shooter and editor stopped working for us, so we brought in DHD Films to help us evolve our brand.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The project began with preliminary production meetings. We had a creative team on our side which included the VP of strategic marketing, our creative director, and myself. We discussed what our goal was, and DHD Films talked about how they could achieve it, collaborating with us on a list of deliverables and potential avenues to explore that.

We also created an outline and a list of questions that they could use as a guide once they were on the field. They set aside four days for production, which involved filming the construction of our space and conducting interviews. Their team brought all of their equipment to our location: lighting gear, a camera on a tripod, a Gimbal, some timelapse recording equipment, and audio recording equipment. My creative director was on set at the time of the shoot while I coordinated everything from Canada.

Once production was done, DHD Films submitted a transcript of the interviews along with a script, which went back and forth on. DHD Films eventually assembled the A-roll, updated them according to our notes, edited in the music that our team provided, and added in some graphic elements.

What is the team composition?

I had initial meetings with their head of sales, and we were on pre-production calls with two people on a regular basis. Sam (Producer) was our main point of contact and was specifically assigned to this project along with two camera operators and an editor. In total, we worked with around 6–7 people.

How did you come to work with DHD Films?

I searched through the internet and shortlisted 10–11 different video companies in Dallas. We narrowed down our options to five providers based solely on their film reels. We interacted with them via email and got to talk over the phone with three vendors. At the end of the day, it looked like DHD Films had the best balance between production value, communication, and budget. We felt that they could deliver what we needed on time and within budget, aside from being fun to work with. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started the engagement in April 2021. They delivered the final video at the beginning of January 2022.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The video is currently up on our website. We don’t have any metrics that speak to any increase in our engagement, but internally, the video has been really well received. We’ve gotten very positive feedback about the caliber, clarity, and conciseness of the storytelling.

How did DHD Films perform from a project management standpoint?

DHD Films delivered exactly what they said they were going to. Any challenges we ran into were just scheduling and supply chain issues on our end brought about by the pandemic. Despite those though, their team was really flexible about adjusting their shooting dates. It also took us awhile to solidify our budget, but they were super patient in letting us take the time that we needed. 

The production went very smoothly. Their camera team had really good eyes and good instincts; the final footages were better than I expected, and they covered everything in the list of reels that we required, which was a testament to how very little guidance they needed. We shifted all of the pre- to postproduction responsibilities to DHD Films, and we didn’t need to think about a thing.

We communicated by phone, email, and Microsoft Teams. We also had a couple of Zoom meetings, and they met in person with members of my team who were in Dallas. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

DHD Films delivered a final product that was better than what we expected, especially on a technical level. I was thrilled by the outcome. They were really nice folks to work and have conversations with, and we were impressed that they were able to deliver a great collaborative experience and final video.

Are there any areas they could improve?

This is a bit nitpicky, but one of the final deliverables had the wrong graphic at the end. It was pretty seamless throughout, though, and they were able to remedy that fairly quickly. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

It all comes down to communication and being clear with your expectations, but also allowing the DHD Films team to surprise you. There were some things that we hadn’t thought of for the video, and we were happy that they brought that to the table.

Our organization is a global real estate provider offering housing solutions in a variety of markets. I’m the senior director for talent development in our property management line of business. Property management is the company’s largest sector, generating 87% of our revenue. Approximately 17,000 employees work inside of our property management business.

What challenge were you trying to address with DHD Films?

We hired DHD Films to equip our new teammates with the skills they need at a faster pace during their onboarding experience. This would help them provide a high level of customer service satisfaction in our apartment community. 

Traditionally, we did everything in the classroom. However, we had an opportunity to shift from the classroom to a blended solution, incorporating digital, self-directed learning experiences to equip and upskill our on-site team. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

With DHD Films, we first identified the right approach in developing micro-learning videos, which demonstrated the skills that our new and existing team members should have. We wanted to educate new team members who didn’t have any real sales experience. On top of that, we wanted to provide ongoing support for those who had been in the industry for some time but were struggling. Ultimately, the deliverables were leasing and sales skills-related micro-learning training videos. 

To kick off the engagement, we provided DHD Films with plenty of information. When we first engaged them, they did some research and took the time to speak to the team members that we were serving. This helped them hear from the members themselves about what they wanted to learn. They also took it upon themselves to understand our company culture to make sure that the deliverables met the customer needs.

At present, we’re in the middle of a five-video project, and we’ve just wrapped up this project’s first video. All the videos they’ve produced are embedded into our onboarding process. 

What is the team composition?

Hussain (President & Chief Success Officer) was highly involved upfront, ensuring that there was clarity on his team’s side. Once we identified the timeline, he ensured that all of us stayed on the same page. Once the approach, timeline, and execution of the project had been agreed upon, Hussain stepped out. 

We’ve since worked closely with the project manager that has been assigned to us. Then, the project manager works closely with the DHD Film crew. 

How did you come to work with DHD Films?

I found them through a Google search. Their website was highly engaging, and I could tell that they were a high-quality firm. I loved that they focused on building partnerships and relationships; they didn’t look at engagements as a checkmark. I was also impressed with their work samples. The way they framed up their business reflected the high level of quality that we wanted.

As a result, I reached out to them. When I had my first conversation with Hussain as well as Shezad (Founder & Creative Director), they were deeply interested in understanding our needs and company culture. I connected with them truly well from a partnership perspective — they genuinely cared. That was why we went with them; they were incredible human beings.

On top of that, they were flexible and open to feedback. We were a tough client; we had high standards in terms of what we expected from our vendors. We liked to have much control and a lot of input. However, this didn’t scare them off. In fact, they welcomed it. Early on, I could tell that they were going to be great business partners, so we hired them.

So far, we’ve invested nearly $200,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started collaborating in March 2017, and the engagement is ongoing. 

Due to our internal processes, our first actual contract didn’t start until November 2017, and we wrapped it up in February 2018. Then, we did another project that lasted from June–August 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’ve done several projects with DHD Films, and they’ve been true partners in those projects. Collectively, the videos have had 20,000 views, meaning thousands of people have completed watching all of our training videos. I don’t have any hard and fast correlating ROI, but I have consumption data and qualitative data from the managers of the individuals who’ve completed the videos. 

So far, they say the videos are very well done and that they give clear examples. They offer good coaching ideas for delivering a high-level customer experience and handling difficult situations that may happen on-site. Higher-level leaders have also been impressed with the quality of the videos. They say that the messaging and timing of the videos are spot on. 

How did DHD Films perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management is excellent and absolutely top-notch. That’s why I keep coming back to them. They’re open to collaboration, and they understand the level of quality that we expect from them. In fact, they’re so easy to work with that I don’t want to work with anybody else. Moreover, they’re so open to feedback that they don’t take our strong opinions personally. I’ve given them tough feedback on our current project, but they’ve been so open that they simply say we’re making them better. That’s one reason I love DHD Films. 

To communicate, we use phone calls and emails. Since this is a partnership, our touchpoints are often done in person. A lot of times, I go to their office, rally around, and do a quick meeting. We’ve also done plenty of on-site video shoots, so I’m often with them on site. I help direct, guide, and coach them to know how we want the videos to be shot, and they’ve been truly collaborative. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The relationship that they build with their customers is their most impressive quality — hands down. We keep coming back to them because of that. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there aren’t any. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have a solid idea of what you want, and be honest and transparent about your expectations,  hesitations, and what’s important to you. The more upfront and transparent you are, the more clarity you’ll have around what you’re hoping to accomplish. Then, step out of the way, and let DHD Films do their magic. That’s how you’re going to get the best product out of them.

I’m a senior account manager on the client services team at a multi-tactic digital marketing agency. We focus on paid media, creative content, and web development services.

What challenge were you trying to address with DHD Films?

DHD Films has essentially been our video and content vendor for the last four years, so we partner with them when we have clients who are looking to creatively tell their stories through video.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

At the end of the day, DHD provides us with video production. The pre-production involves getting in a call with myself and the client, which then goes into full-service video production. The production can take anywhere from a day to a week, capturing all the footage on set, and then going into post-production. This phase involves editing, putting everything together, and sharing the output with the client.

Once the client approves it after an x amount of rounds of feedbacking, we then export the final product and send it to them. After that, we will distribute the final product through paid media efforts.

What is the team composition?

I would say it depends on the size of the project. We’ve definitely done smaller projects with them where there are only around 3–4 people involved, and we’ve done larger ones with around 8–9 people on set. On an average project, I work with one producer, one creative director, and probably three crew members from DHD.

How did you come to work with DHD Films?

One of our clients asked us to put a quote together for a specific type of video, but I didn’t know anyone at the time, so one of my co-workers referred me to DHD Films. I reached out to them, told them our budget, and asked them to send us examples of things that they’ve done within this realm.

They sent us some examples and found that they had really high-quality products. We decided to work with them and it just started organically from there.

How much have you invested with them?

If I had to round everything up, I’d say we’ve spent about $250,000 from all the projects we’ve done so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started our partnership in July 2017, and it’s still ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The reason we continue to work with them is that they’re one of the top video production studios in Dallas. They’re a very small team but they’re absolutely professional and incredible. We’ve been able to work together, and we’ve gotten so close over the years, that I follow some of these folks on social media.

I’ve never really had to question their intentions or approach, because we believe that what they’re recommending and doing, is the best possible thing for the project or situation.

How did DHD Films perform from a project management standpoint?

I know that DHD is a growing organization. There are times when a producer who is normally focused on wrangling assets and products, sometimes plays the role of an account manager. They’re answering emails throughout the day, while simultaneously doing video shoots and preplanning other projects.

They’re good from a project management standpoint, but if they’re able to expand their teams and divide roles more evenly, then they would be even more successful. It would really allow incredibly talented people to be even more talented in their roles, instead of having to wear multiple hats all day long.

Moreover, our communication is done over email, but as things start progressing, I can pick up my phone and call any of my producers or the two studio owners at any time. Additionally, I’ve never had an issue with communication with them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Working with them really makes us feel like we’re part of the team. They pull us into the project to get our thoughts, considerations, and recommendations. We also like how DHD doesn’t just hire people for the sake of hiring people. Applicants really have to prove their weight and show that they know what they’re doing to be a part of the team. That’s how I know I’m not just working with individuals, I’m working with professionals who know their stuff.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They’re a really great agency, but I wish they would market themselves better. They have a strong relationship with a very small group of Fortune 500 companies that they consistently work with, who I think provide most of their revenue throughout the year. I think that they have the potential to expand, but are just afraid to do so.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

My advice is to not be afraid to have an actual conversation with them, and don’t feel like you have to be a “yes man”. They only want the best for you or your client, and at the end of the day, they just want to be proud of the work they’re doing. Therefore, they need to have open communications with you, because that’s where the true story comes out.

I’m the CEO of YTexas. We’re an organization that helps companies relocating to Texas get more familiar with the business landscape.

What challenge were you trying to address with DHD Films?

We’ve worked with DHD Films for several years on many initiatives. When COVID-19 hit, we had to take our annual event into a virtual event. We didn’t have the right partner to help us kick off a virtual event and a virtual livestream, so we reached out to DHD Films to help us with that.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The DHD Films team had constantly assisted us with videos for our annual gala and general marketing and production for the company.

For this particular project, their team helped us create a strategy for the virtual event. We had a lineup of about 100 hundred speakers, and DHD Films helped us with the livestream, mostly through livestream dial-in and some in-studio speakers.

They’ve helped us launch some of our events, and we’ll continue to work with them.

I found them through general networking. We were doing a lot of work with the governor’s office, and I knew the DHD Films team had the experience with local chambers. Since then, we’ve continued to work with them on several projects.

The DHD Films team puts a lot of focus and pride into delivering a good product. They’re reliable individuals who make sure the show gets kicked off, especially when we have thousands of people relying on us. What’s more, they hold themselves accountable to a high standard, which they’ve always met.

How did DHD Films perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re great communicators. Whenever they’re waiting for information from us, they’re adamant about us getting it to them on time. Dealing with a lot of moving parts and not meeting in person could make it hard to keep everyone on the same page, but they’ve been an excellent team to work with.

The quality of their work is good. They’re not the cheapest, but they deliver.

No. Everything was good and timely.

Any advice for potential customers?

If you’re going to work with a film company, you need to know what your objectives, goals, vision, and audiences are. It’s important to acknowledge why you’re getting the project done the way you want it, and how long you want it to be. There’s a lot to think about before engaging a production company. 

DHD Films is professional enough to guide its clients to different solutions if clients aren’t savvy, have no idea of what they’re looking for, or have never produced a video before.

We’re a nonprofit business organization. We represent about 800 member organizations in the areas of public policy, education, economic development, leadership, and talent attraction.

What challenge were you trying to address with DHD Films?

Every year we have an annual meeting, which is the largest event in our company. This year we had to move that to a virtual meeting, and DHD Films produced a 70-minute program segment video.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

In the beginning, we talked about the concept, run of show, continuity, key themes, and messaging. After that, we moved into the execution phase where they worked on the script, alternative footage, graphic content, and coordination. Later on, they filmed over 50 people for the program and edited that into a tight 70-minute video; the goal was to keep people informed and engaged in order to hold them at the video conference.

What is the team composition?

Our main point of contact was Joshua (Producer) who I’ve worked with in the past, and he’s wonderful. In addition to him, Shazad (Founder) and Hussein (President) were also involved.

How did you come to work with DHD Films?

We did an RFP process, and DHT came as the clear partner we wanted, not only because of their response but also because we’ve worked with them on other projects and we have a great relationship with them.

The program they delivered was a component of the overall engagement numbers that our meeting generated.

How did DHD Films perform from a project management standpoint?

We used Microsoft Teams, phone calls, emails, and text messages for communication. For shared documents and graphics management, we used Microsoft OneDrive. They might have used other software, but that was what we used, and it worked great.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What stands out was their patience and guiding partnership; they were great people and good at what they did. We did a lot of editing because the stakes were high for this project, and throughout the entire process, DHD was extremely patient with all of our requests. Also, they used their best practices and expertise to help us shape the final product. 

Additionally, most of their work was done virtually. That presented another set of challenges, but it didn’t hinder the success of our project; they were exceptional from beginning to end.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there wasn’t anything to improve.

Any advice for potential customers?

Do the hard work early, whether it’s relational, organizational, or visional; that makes for a smooth process into the final product. It was important to us to go through the slog in the early stages of the project so that DHT had a clear vision of what we wanted at the filming and editing stage.

I’m the head of HR in the construction materials industry. We produce concrete, drainage products, as well as ductile products primarily focused on water transmission. We’re a publicly-traded organization with just under 5,000 people, and we're based in Irving, Texas.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with DHD Films?

We had an annual leadership meeting which until this year was done in person. In light of COVID-19, people needed to be socially distanced, so we had to switch over to a virtual platform to conduct the meeting. 

We'd never done it in the past and quickly realized it was not our expertise. As a result, we explored options for partners to help us execute the project, and we decided to partner with DHD Films.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The project was divided into phases including planning, designing, and execution of the event. Our company started by trying to figure out how to do the virtual event, and based on our basic event plan, DHD Films helped us transition everything virtually.

We gave them the information on how we wanted our meeting to flow, what messages we wanted to share, and what type of content we wanted to feature. Moreover, we provided documentation on how we conducted the same event last year.

They supported us in deciding the online platforms we’d use, and they assisted in our pre-recording efforts. In the end, they helped us execute our virtual event which we conducted over the course of two days.

We worked with two main points of contact. There were also other groups that came in and out as needed.

How did you come to work with DHD Films?

DHD Films was recommended by someone who had worked with them. We looked at the quality of their content, and we were impressed. They were also local and very responsive. 

As we went through the assessment process, we did a smaller engagement with them before deciding to proceed with this project. Their excellent performance in the smaller work assignment gave us the confidence that they’d be the right partner for our virtual event.

We spent in the ballpark of $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our project ran from November 2020–March 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

DHD Films was our knowledge source in effectively delivering our virtual event, and with their perfect agenda-setting process, everything was streamlined. We didn’t have any statistics, but we conducted a survey of our participants’ experiences. 

The results of the survey showed that one-quarter of the survey responses were as high, if not higher than what we had for our in-person events in the past. We also received a lot of anecdotal comments from third-party stakeholders, and they said the virtual event exceeded their expectations. 

How did DHD Films perform from a project management standpoint?

They were very responsive, and their expertise allowed us to make the right decisions. DHD Films was also resourceful — they knew how to access resources based on our needs, especially when they didn’t have the resources in-house. 

We communicated using emails, and we kept in touch through Zoom calls whenever necessary. They also used a project management tool to track and document all the deliverables we created. Furthermore, they asked questions that we didn’t ask, and that enabled us to see all the project's aspects. Overall, they showed a strong performance.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What stood out to me was DHD Films’ level of personalized service, engagement, and responsiveness. In the context of general service providers we had worked with outside of this scope, the team’s attention to detail was something noteworthy. We were satisfied with their deliverables and process.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There would always be opportunities to improve, but there was nothing that stuck out as they need to do better in this project.

Consider hiring DHD Films if you have a similar project like ours. Listen to their advice because they have great experiences and they’re willing to share that with you.

DHD was engaged from the beginning. They did a thorough Q&A to determine what we needed and worked hard to deliver what we expected. Sam was responsive at all hours--even through an ice storm that caused chaos in DFW. He was easy to work with and helped us plan our timeline and deadlines.
