I’m a performance marketing manager at Smarkets, a financial betting exchange platform where users can bet and trade markets on sports, politics, and current affairs. We’ve been running primarily in the UK since 2010, but we also have some European and US jurisdictions.

I focus on user growth for the two main products of the business: the betting exchange and software development kit sports betting apps. I also do some work on marketing, tech, and attribution.

We needed help with organic growth. Even though we focused on user growth through PPC, we wanted to continue to grow our organic presence and optimize our app stores.

ConsultMyApp provides advertising and marketing services. We initially provided them with a brief of what we were looking to do and who our company was. Then, they provided us with a proposal of what they could do and a roadmap. Once we were happy with it, we signed the paperwork and began our partnership.

We’ve leaned heavily on ConsultMyApp or advice, liaising between their recommendations and the tech teams we need to implement them. They also ensure we’re up to date with the latest trends in our industry so we can rank well on the search results.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’ve been really happy with their work. ConsultMyApp is great at creating content to help us with our search rankings. We’ve seen significant improvements in our organic rankings for high-level search terms within our industry. Also, ConsultMyApp has helped us improve our app store ratings. When we started with them, our score was around 3.6 on the App Store and 3.4 on Google Play Store; we’re now sitting on 4.6 and 4.2, respectively. Overall, we’ve also gotten great feedback from our customers.

How did ConsultMyApp (CMA) perform from a project management standpoint?

They’ve delivered the work on time. In particular, the project manager has been available almost every hour of the day, even at times when we don’t request him to be on hand. Moreover, the team is very amenable to any changes we need. Since our industry is heavily regulated, we need to ensure that messages are conveyed in a certain way to stay legally compliant. Our industry is also event-driven, so it’s important to touch base and update the events that affect our business as the year goes on. All in all, ConsultMyApp is great at keeping us up to date with that.

Additionally, we regularly engage in conversations through internal messaging and have biweekly meetings to hear updates on their work. They’re also based in London, so we’re fortunate enough to meet them in person as well.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They have an excellent team environment. ConsultMyApp is motivated to work, collaborative, and hospitable. They’ve invited us to meet their team, even the ones who aren’t directly on our account. Also, it’s easy to get along with them, and we’ve maintained a great work relationship.

Ultimately, ConsultMyApp keeps on the ball with the ever-changing industry, which is challenging. They stay on top of the information and understand at a deep level how to navigate everything to get the best out of what they’re doing.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They should ensure that things are airtight when it comes to our industry and offering. There have been times when ConsultMyApp has needed to improve on some final checks regarding briefings and other things of that nature. However, it might be because they’ve had to learn on the go about our industry to understand its nuances. It’s tough to get used to that, and ConsultMyApp has improved over time; although there’s still room for improvement.

Make sure your needs align with their specific needs; they’re more focused on marketing.

We wanted to grow the organic presence of our mobile apps on the App Store, so we sought ConsultMyApp(CMA)’s help.

What was the scope of their involvement?

CMA has provided us with app store optimization (ASO) services, using different keywords and ASO strategies to grow our organic presence in the App Store. Additionally, they’ve helped us create and manage Apple Search Ads.

With CMA’s help, we’ve been purchasing apps and doing ASO reviews to understand the relevant keywords, screenshots, and other App Store-specific details in the market to improve our organic marketing and our apps' footprint. Moreover, we’ve used an integrated Apple Search Ads strategy to target branded, competitor, and discovery keywords and improve the marketability of said apps.

Throughout the project, we’ve provided CMA with our insight and knowledge, but they’ve also done some keyword research on their end. They’ve also updated our apps’ metadata, tracked the keywords, and provided us with analytics regarding the apps’ performance and positioning.

Moreover, CMA has been doing competitor analysis work to give us guidance. For example, their team quickly identifies when our competitors change their screenshots to keep us on top of what others are doing and how they’re marketing their apps.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

CMA has performed exceedingly well. For one of our apps, they’ve been very creative in using enough events to help index more keywords and keyword combinations, which ultimately has helped us triple the number of impressions and double its downloads.

How did ConsultMyApp (CMA) perform from a project management standpoint?

CMA always presents the action plans we need to take in a clear way, and we have quick communication via Slack. We also meet biweekly via Zoom to ensure we’re moving along in our projects, and we communicate via email as needed.

What did you find most impressive about them?

CMA is very professional, and they always do their best to know our product and the people we work with. Additionally, they always come ready with well-done presentations to discuss new strategies, helping us stay on top of trends. I’m a project manager within the marketing department at TwinSpires, a business unit for Churchill Downs Incorporated, which is a horse racing company. We oversee the app and online betting portion of the business.

What was the scope of their involvement?

ConsultMyApp (CMA) helps us oversee our UA efforts, which is one of the biggest drivers to continue hitting our yearly goals. The team creates paid campaigns for us from scratch. They also make recommendations for app optimization, including creatives within the app and the metadata we update frequently. Their efforts are focused on tailoring and improving our visibility within the App Store and Google Play. CMA also oversees the budget for paid campaigns and what it’s being used for.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Since we’ve been working with CMA, we’ve continued to be one of the leaders in our industry regarding performance in the App Store and Google Play, and they make sure we’re making improvements to keep it that way. Recently, we’ve hit all of our marks and then some, and a significant amount of credit goes to CMA.

The biggest time in the year for us is around the Kentucky Derby, which is a make-or-break week for hitting our goals. The continuous feedback, recommendations, and monitoring CMA provides about our spending and performance are invaluable. Their open line of communication and how they make themselves a resource for us if we have questions is an incredible boon. They don’t feel like a vendor but a part of the team, especially during that week.

We communicate via Slack, integrating them into our parent company’s workspace. For most meetings, we use Zoom. We use Jira for project management, and they’re integrated into that as well. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I have an agency background, so I understand that setting proper expectations about turnaround time and communication standards can be challenging. However, CMA makes it look effortless and makes us feel like they value our relationship. Their timely replies and insightful responses, even to random questions, are refreshing. Overall, they go above and beyond and keep the relationship effective and positive.

I can’t think of anything they need to improve; they consistently hit the mark for us.

I’m the director of the Church of Sweden abroad. We have about 40 congregations that we support, and we’re one of the largest Lutheran churches in the world, with around 8 million members.

What challenge were you trying to address with ConsultMyApp (CMA)?

We wanted to have our congregations online when we couldn’t be physically present. This project was pushed forward during the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea was to tie things together in the tech world with something that used to be face-to-face.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

CMA developed a one-stop-shop Android and iOS app from scratch. Within the app, users can select their congregation and see contact information and the services offered. Additionally, information like news, where to donate, podcasts, and live feeds are all available. 

First, we had a startup meeting, and we continued with scrum meetings throughout the process. We collaborated with CMA to define the wireframes. From there, they did the development work, including optimization for the App Store and the Google Play Store. We wanted to focus on user engagement, so we collaborated to decide what to put on push notifications to maximize users returning to the app. Currently, CMA is helping us with marketing.

Since it was the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, we needed someone that had expertise in the field if we were going to get the project off the ground. We chose CMA because they had a proven track record of engaging users on an app platform.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The app has about 1,000 active users, which is really good for an app like ours. Additionally, we have many success stories at a congregational level. For example, we saw people over 70-years-old engaging with the app quite early in the Netherlands, which is unusual. 

Overall, everyone is happy with CMA’s work, and our users have been able to interact with their church and attend services digitally despite lockdowns. The project has been a real success, and now we’re looking at expanding and doing something even bigger with it. 

How did ConsultMyApp (CMA) perform from a project management standpoint?

We haven’t had any problems at all regarding project management. The team has hit all the deadlines, and they have been very proactive. We have one designated teammate who works with CMA, and we mostly use email to communicate. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m most impressed by CMA’s honesty, and I appreciate how they try to understand our requirements. The team has been open-minded in interacting with us and figuring out our church and theology to help as best they can. Additionally, they’ve tried to expand on what we’ve told them on their own, which is uncommon today. Overall, working with CMA has been a really great experience — they have our best interest at heart.

I am the senior mobile marketing manager for Lottoland. We are a gaming company and our core product is online lotteries. We also offer other popular gaming products such as scratch cards, casino games, and recently we have also added our sports vertical. I look after our mobile apps, and I am responsible for the mobile marketing strategy worldwide.

What challenge were you trying to address with ConsultMyApp (CMA)?

We needed someone to help us with app store optimization. Before working with them, I was working with another mobile marketing agency, but their services started to become quite costly and we wanted to look somewhere else and explore other partnerships. At the same time, they were quite cold in what they were expected to deliver, meaning that they did the job, but I don’t think they went the extra mile. We wanted something more and wanted to build a stronger relationship and get more of a tailored service rather than being just one of their main customers.

The first project was about App store positioning and helping us get our apps more discoverable in the App Store and Google Play Store, and improve our visibility which would end up in more installs. They fully delivered according to our expectations, and they were able to help us define what success could look like.

I worked with two people. One was a guy who has since left the company. I now work with Martina (Senior Marketing Consultant) who takes care of our account.

They found me. Mike (Founding Director) reached out to me on LinkedIn. He told me that he noticed that our overall performance in the App Store was not as good as it could have been. He wanted to have a chat with me and my team to understand our challenges. He then made a clear proposal on what they would do for us. I decided to start working with them because, from the very beginning, I noticed that they were extremely knowledgeable, set clear goals and KPIs, and they actually delivered what we expected them to.

We started working with them in January 2018, and we’ve recently wrapped up the project in July 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We did notice an impact. They managed to fully exceed our expectations. Our market is quite a competitive one, especially in the UK, and they managed to improve our rankings, and now are we are ranking second after the national lottery which is a strong brand in the UK. Since we don’t have any physical presence, we started fresh there. We were not as popular and to now rank second is a great result. We were not expecting that.

They were so good in also helping us build our own skills and learning from them, that now we feel like we can stand on our own feet and go on thanks to their expertise.

How did ConsultMyApp (CMA) perform from a project management standpoint?

It was really smooth. They took care of everything. It was quite easy for us to relax and take advantage of the fact that they were really good at doing the project management side of things. They were setting deadlines and took care of scheduling all the activities to get where we wanted to get. It was quite comfortable for us to be guided by them. We set the goals, but then they were the ones that ensured that we had the best possible metadata, keywords, and whatever makes the app perform better.

They were also good at managing all the stakeholders within our company. For example, we have to closely work with the product team. They had to take care of the app build and we can only do an app release when the build is ready, and this comes from the product team. The agency was liaising with them to understand when we were about to have a new app release and made sure that they were ready by then with the up to date metadata.

To show their results, they presented them through a tool that they had developed. This platform allowed us to understand how our visibility has changed over time, but it might not be as transparent to the customer how this tool that they have created delivers specific metrics. Sometimes when you have a session with them reviewing the data, it might be unclear as a customer whether they really achieved something or if it something they see in their tool. Beyond that, they also told us the number of organic installs we’ve achieved in that period. In the end, it is not a problem. We can see the results.

What did you find most impressive about them?

One thing which is very good is the fact that they are extremely proactive. They really care about our brand and our app. For instance, they reach out to us whenever there is something that needs to be changed, fixed, or improved without having to chase them. Many times, it was them telling me that we need to change something because of an update of Apple’s side or Google side. They were able to share any relevant updates with us, so we were ahead of the curve before any issue came up.

No, I am extremely happy with them.

You can just trust them and rely on them and let them guide you. They are absolutely trustworthy and knowledgeable. To take full advantage of their expertise, you need to fully rely on them, accept their guidance, and listen to them.
