We needed help building our app.

What was the scope of their involvement?

AnatomizeTech has helped us build our app's entire tech stack. We initially came to them with a well-flushed-out set of product specs around what the app needed to do and its primary functions. The team has built all the engineering and coding to make that happen. They've also done all the design, including the initial brand design, brand guidelines, colors, customer interaction, and experience. In addition, they've built iOS and Android versions of the app using React and Java.

To start the process, we provided them with a bunch of documentation we had created. We had been experimenting on our own with no-code functions, building a mobile app version with no code. We shared the prototyping we had done and showed them examples of things that weren't perfect but were on the path. From there, they've built wireframes and consumer workflows and incorporated games to understand how the game algorithms would work, primarily in Figma. They've built the app and reiterated it.

The app is in the redevelopment phase, and they provide light maintenance services.

What is the team composition?

We have two primary contacts. Val, the CTO & Co-Founder, leads all the software engineering and mobile app development, while Anna, the Co-Founder, leads all the design, UX design, and screens. Underneath them are at least 4–5 engineers, including backend, Android, iOS, and game engineers. We've had more than one engineer working in each of those spaces when there has been a particularly heavy lift.

How did you come to work with AnatomizeTech?

We were part of an online group talking about how to build apps. We connected with the CEO of AnatomizeTech in that space and had some questions about how to build the app we were thinking about. 

We chose them because they had built a dating app for another company and had experience building consumer-facing apps. The two primary contacts are siblings, and we liked their relationship and vibe. I have worked with a sibling a lot in other parts of my life, so that was something that really resonated strongly with me.

How much have you invested with them?

We've spent $70,000–$80,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in November 2021, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We have about 20,000 live installs, and we've had over a million messages and activities on the platform, including gameplay. The app's functionality includes messaging and gaming.

How did AnatomizeTech perform from a project management standpoint?

They deliver work on time and within budget. The team is very iterative and helpful, willing to explain and walk us through a lot, especially in the beginning. We knew what we wanted but weren't savvy in software development, so we didn't know how to get there. They explained what was needed behind the scenes to enable our vision. We communicate via email, text, and Slack. We also use Trello for sprint management.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We like their ability to flex their team size up and down. I actually like that a lot of their work has been their decision-making, and they've made some great decisions about how we've built our data infrastructure.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We would have loved to have done better in terms of resources. This is an under-resourced app and development project, so we go in spurts. The problem with that is that we have to bring everyone back up to speed every time we come back for a new sprint. It would have been great to have a more thorough line. But that was also something I could not afford, so that was the nature of it, and this is partly on me.

We embarked on some projects where we started to build before the design was fully there, and that caused a lot of problems for us. Still, I thought the design was more fleshed out than it really was. It wasn't until we got into the process that I realized how little of it I'd actually thought through. We ended up having to halt the engineering to do a bunch more design. They were trying to execute my vision. I just hadn't articulated it.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

If you're inexperienced in software development, you must get much more granular and specific in your vision. You must show up with a detailed recipe for what you want to build. The gap between what you want and what you get is where all the problems lie. AnatomizeTech is good at walking people through this process, but the more you can get specific about your vision, the better you'll be served.

Getting everybody on board on their team was sometimes a little difficult. Whilst they gave great recommendations sometimes our ones were not heard. This however was usually resolved with time.

SecureClose had an existing product called Connect that serves as an intermediary between document provider software and our own. We were never thrilled with the implementation and how unintuitive the product was to use. We worked with AnatomizeTech on modernizing and updating the concept into an easy-to-use package that just works, and provides and excellent customer experience.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Ultimately we wanted a product that was intuitive, would reduce our required implementation time, and used more modern technology to pull more helpful data for our customers out of their documents to reduce their time and overhead on manual entry. We have the product released now in a controlled beta and so far have been thrilled with the feedback from our customers.
