I’m a developer at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. We source and roast specialty coffees through direct relationships with farmers, offering high-quality, ethically traded coffee at our San Diego retail locations and around the globe.

What challenge were you trying to address with Always Open Commerce?

We needed help with a website platform migration from Shopify to BigCommerce.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Always Open Commerce worked directly with our developer and graphic design team, taking PSD, PDF, and JPG webpage mockups and turning them into an interactive dynamic website. 
Although this covered almost every webpage on our website, the most important were custom product pages, custom category pages, and detailed pages involving our company's impacts and direct trade partners. Always Open Commerce also covered ongoing maintenance for several years after the initial implementation.

We found them through an online search. We chose them over other options because they had high ratings, a great culture fit, good value for cost, and their website project portfolio was well done with a variety of projects that had dynamic modern visuals and good page speeds.

We worked together from February 2023–February 2026.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Always Open Commerce's collaboration between teams and execution were so excellent that we kept them on retainer to continue to update, optimize, and find ways to improve the website. AOCs work drastically increased our page speed and improved overall user engagement. The mobile website experience was excellent, and our mobile engagement improved which resulted an even higher number of transactions.

How did Always Open Commerce perform from a project management standpoint?

Always Open Commerce's webpages were always completed on time, if not early, and always functioned properly. Any comments or suggestions on those projects once delivered were adjusted or fixed within 24 hours of the initial delivery. 
The team took it upon themselves each month if they had extra time allotted for our retainer to make website or e-commerce related suggestions they could do so we made the best use of the paid allotment. We communicated via email, which was my method of choice and was never an issue.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Always Open Commerce's communication and thorough nature were always easy and pleasant to work with. Their team's skillset was broad enough to cover any type of project I gave them, regardless of complexity.

They did everything perfectly!

migrating from Blueprint to Stencil and updating our Cornerstone theme. As a printing and graphic design company in Atlanta, we needed a website that not only looked sharp but was easy for our customers to use. AOC delivered on both.

The use of Hubstaff was crucial to see the work being completed. This allowed me to monitor the project to stay on target for launch. The launch date was crucial as it was a hard date. AOC presented a scope that allowed for the date to be hit. That was the biggest measure

Their project management was full of communication. The online platform HubStaff was used which allowed for effective communication. Meeting requests over zoom were never a problem. Keep in mind that the work is being done off shore, so there is a delay in responses because of time zones, or I just had to work at night. This might not be an issue for your project though. Delivery was always on schedule

The initial proposal included a detailed example of what the site could look like. Any changes that needed approval always had an example.

I feel the statement of work could have been a little more clear on the offshore work. I'm not apposed to this, but I missed it in the statement of work.

We used freelancers for years, and switched e-commerce platform multiple times over the years, which made it very hard to find & keep a consistent, reliable, and knowledgeable web developer. As a result of this, we ended up trying to hire an in-house web developer, which was much more costly, but also turned out to have very limited in skill set for high salary. 

After 2-3 in-house position that ended up not working, we circled back with AOC who had reached out few months prior with their value proposal of an all-in-one agency. At first, we wanted to stir away from such agency, but the ability to have a web developer, web designer, graphic designer, among other services offered, all packed in one hourly package fee started making more sense for our company. We've now been using AOC for 1.5+ years and we couldn't be more satisfied. 

We currently average 120+ work hours between graphic designer (landing pages, blast email, advertising material), marketplace management (new product upload, and catalog data management), blast email, website design/development, among other. tasks. We're able to accurately track time spent on each task, and by whom, which makes it very easy to understand where our budget is going. The project manager, and team are always very responsive, and go above and beyond to complete the tasks at hand. 

By using AOC for over 1.5+ years, it has become easier and easier to work with them, and complete our tasks, as the devs now know us, our products, what we like and dont like, as well as our expectations. So some tasks that would require many revisions in the past, are typically completed much faster, as we really know what to expect, and they know how to deliver. Overall, great company, great team, great value, I would highly recommend AOC!
