WebbyLab

BACKGROUND

I am the Deputy CMO of PATON

PATON is a Ukrainian manufacturer of welding equipment and power sources. We design and produce inverter welding machines and related equipment for industrial and professional use, supported by our own network of service centers across the country.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

• Build a connected ecosystem for our welding equipment so that firmware can be updated over the air instead of requiring a visit to a service center.
• Deliver a mobile application for end users and service centers to pair with devices, manage them and install firmware updates.
• Provide an admin platform for our team to manage firmware releases, roll them out gradually and control which service centers get them.

WebbyLab covered the full product cycle: embedded firmware, backend, admin panel and mobile application. Key deliverables: • Firmware for an ESP32-based BLE bridge that connects the STM32 controllers running inside our welding machines to the mobile application. The bridge implements a custom protocol for transferring firmware files to the controller modules, works with all types of our welding equipment, and has its own OTA protocol for updating its own firmware. • A Node.js backend with an admin panel for release management: creating firmware releases for welding equipment and bridge devices, uploading firmware files, versioning, recommended releases and internal releases visible only to selected service centers. • A cross-platform React Native application for iOS and Android with OTP authentication, device pairing, device management and the complete firmware update flow. • UX/UI design for both the mobile application and the admin panel. • Production and demo environments, CI/CD, monitoring and alerting. • Publication of the applications to the App Store and Google Play, plus handover of the source code, builds and third-party accounts to our team.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Firmware updates that previously required bringing the machine to a service center can now be installed by the user from a phone in a few minutes. A single release now covers the entire range of welding equipment instead of a separate build per series, which noticeably reduced the effort our team spends preparing and publishing a release. Both applications passed App Store and Google Play review, the platform went live on production infrastructure with monitoring and alerting in place, and our service centers now use the same tools to support customers in the field.

The team worked in regular iterations with a clear plan and consistent status reporting, so we always knew what was in progress and what was coming next. Requirements were documented in detail before development started, which saved a lot of rework. Deadlines were met, and when the scope changed — which happened several times during the project — WebbyLab came back quickly with an assessment and options instead of simply pushing the dates. Communication ran through regular video calls and a shared messaging channel, and questions were usually answered within hours. The production launch was planned as a separate structured checklist covering firmware, servers, the mobile app and the handover of accesses, which made the go-live predictable for both sides.

• Virtual Meeting
• Email or Messaging App

The breadth of engineering expertise in one team. Very few vendors can take on embedded firmware, cloud backend, an admin platform and mobile applications at the same time — WebbyLab did all of it, which meant no integration gaps between the layers and no need for us to coordinate several contractors. Equally important was their sense of ownership: they proposed architectural improvements, raised risks early, and clearly cared about how the solution would work for our service centers and end users, not just about closing assigned tasks.

Nothing critical, but there are two areas we would approach differently. The first is UX with a sharper focus on our end users: many of them are mature professionals with limited experience using digital products, so the interface could have been simplified even further for them. Closely related to this is localisation — the wording could have been more native and closer to the language our audience actually uses, rather than a straightforward translation. The second is device coverage: although we had agreed on a list of supported phones and OS versions upfront, in reality a noticeable share of our users turned out to have older devices, which caused a few isolated issues. WebbyLab resolved all of them, but only after a round of field testing — running that testing on real user devices earlier would have surfaced these points sooner.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m an architect at iBASEt, a manufacturing solutions provider.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with WebbyLab?

We needed to upgrade our legacy enterprise product to the latest browser-based user interface. We started developing it by ourselves, but it was difficult for us to get people on board quickly, so we started looking for someone with expertise in the area to help us quickly.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We have different modules in our system, one of which needed to be made available on the new browser-based application. WebbyLab used React, Redux, and JavaScript to convert the legacy modules to a web-based architecture with the frontend technologies. They also helped us in putting architecture with Node.js backend services and writing the APIs on Node.js.

What is the team composition?

There are two senior developers and two junior developers.

We analyzed several companies. We engaged a few companies, but kept running into issues. Our CTO reached out to WebbyLab on LinkedIn, and they were the right size for us and very focused.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent $125,000 on the project.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our engagement with Webbylab started in October 2019.  In March of 2020, we decided to take a pause due to our internal constraints.  We would be engaging back Webbylab once our internal constraints are lifted.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

WebbyLab is very technically sound. They’re focused on doing their work the right way and not just completing it. The team researches how to implement everything correctly before following through.

Also, they have open-source frameworks they use among their different projects. They suggested the same for us, and it was nice to start using what they had already. It helped us to move forward quickly.

How did WebbyLab perform from a project management standpoint?

They performed really well. The technical lead was good with communication. It didn’t go as fast as we expected, but given the complexity and the explanation WebbyLab provided, I’m happy with the time it took.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their expertise and desire to deliver work done the right way was impressive.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The junior developers could benefit from working to improve their English. It could sometimes be difficult to communicate with them. It was helpful having the lead.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I recommend working with them. They’re responsive and engaged.
