The project began as a pilot involving eight locations that deliver our culinary nutrition lessons. We wanted educators to have access to reusable learning objects that could support demonstrations without introducing real food, sharp utensils, or other items that may not be suitable for every classroom. Our initial library included portion-size models, food-group sorting pieces, measuring aids, simplified kitchen-tool replicas, sequencing tiles for recipes, and textured objects used in lessons with younger students. We also created replacement components for a few existing classroom kits.

3DPrinterOS helped us organize the files by program and age group, test the models on the printers available at participating locations, and establish approved print settings for each item. By the end of the pilot, the participating locations had produced more than 160 classroom pieces from a library of 12 approved models. Replacement time also improved considerably. When part of a teaching kit was lost or damaged, replacing it previously involved checking inventory and shipping an item from our central location. That could take two or three weeks.

 During the pilot, most replacement pieces were available at the teaching site within two working days. The project also gave us useful demand data. We could see that portion models and recipe-sequencing tiles were printed far more frequently than several of the other resources. That information helped us decide which materials should be included in future program kits instead of relying only on informal feedback from instructors.

During the pilot, we produced approximately 600 student rewards without maintaining a large inventory of finished items. Previously, adding a new physical reward required ordering a minimum quantity from a supplier, even when we did not know how popular it would be. With the new process, we could introduce a design in a small batch and continue producing it only if students selected it.

Our average fulfillment time for personalized rewards decreased from around three weeks to eight business days, including production and shipping preparation. We also tested nine new reward concepts during the project and discontinued three of them without being left with unused stock. The percentage of students redeeming their achievement points increased after the personalized options became available. This was valuable to us because the rewards are intended to maintain motivation and give students a visible reminder of their progress.
