Open Wave Mobility is a pure software development product company. We build products for the mobile Internet, working substantially with mobile service providers, such as AT&T Wireless, Sprint, Orange, Vodafone, SoftBank Mobile, and Telstra. We focus in mobile data traffic management, where we have efficiently managed the traffic over the mobile network with capabilities, such as video streaming optimization. We also do mobile traffic monetization, where we actually have the mobile operators monetize the traffic over the network through mobile advertisement end-user engagement and policy enforcement solutions. Finally, we do mobile subscriber data management, where we manage the life cycle of the subscriber's profile for all the different applications that the mobile operator has within their network.

What business challenge were you trying to address with XIM?

As a software product company, software development is one of the key, if not the most important, groups within the organization, and we work in quite a challenging environment in terms of technical complexity. We've struggled to recruit high-end software development and resources at the pace that we wanted due to our opportunities. We worked with XIM as an extension of our existing research and development or software development team as a means to strengthen and grow our team overall.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in detail.

Ultimately, XIM provides software development and software testing engineers into our research and development team, but they truly act as a natural extension of each of our teams. All of our software development groups have XIM members within them, so they're actually involved in every one of our products. The roles that they provide is from design through to implementation and testing as well as customer support on occasions because we have some customers that are actually in the local regions where we have our XIM engineers.

How did you come to work with XIM?

XIM had originally been working with our previous parent company called Open Wave on a client business, not on our service side development. When I took over the service side or the mobility division before we were privatized and became a new company, I was looking for a new offshore development partner. We already had one, but I wasn't happy with the performance of them, so we went out RFP [request for proposal], and I invited XIM into that process. That was in 2006. Today, we're successful in one of our product lines, and due to the success in that product line, I had then introduced them as our primary offshore development partner.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

It's in the order of $10 million.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

They are integrated into our development team, so it's hard to say what we can associate to them. I can give you some numbers, such as increased test automation during the last 18 months by more than 80 percent. We've also improved our product quality index. We improved our product quality index in the last 18 months by 32 percent.

How did XIM perform from a project management standpoint?

From an overall management perspective, XIM is very transparent. They are responsive, and they're easy to work with, too.

What distinguishes XIM from other providers?

The quality of XIM's employees from a technical aptitude perspective is greater than anything we've seen with any of our other vendors, and that's what lent us to being the long-term partner of theirs.

Is there anything XIM could have improved or done differently?

To be honest, no, or else I wouldn't have been with them now. The challenges that we've had through the years, they have addressed openly and objectively and resolved them. That's always a sign of a good partnership. They are very much customer-focused, and they commit the appropriate time for us at a management level as well.

The size of the project is in the $50,000 to $200,000 range.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started about 12 to 18 months ago [as of August 2015]. It's ongoing.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

In our industry, we cannot measure tangible results. We focus on the convenience of use because we are an end product. Our sales are also based on other factors. The ease of use of the portal is the only thing I could relate to XIM's work, and that part is great. Our employees are using it successfully and are very satisfied with it.

How did XIM perform from a project management standpoint?

XIM's project management and quality of work is great. There are certain challenges, but this is one of the easiest projects I've ever done. I got direct access to the team, so it was easy to overcome any challenges or make changes if something didn't feel right. They have met all our demands and brought their own fresh ideas to the project.

What distinguishes XIM from other providers?

XIM's team is diverse in terms of expertise. Starting with CRM expertise to HTML and mobile applications, it makes them really versatile and unique. They're capable of understanding the product and business requirements as well as implementing them. They can really relate to the client. Additionally, XIM is very professional, and has great customer service and experienced personnel. They make you feel like a VIP client. Moreover, all the deadlines had been met in an acceptable time frame with good code quality and consistency.

Is there anything XIM could have improved or done differently?

You have to give them as much detail as possible in terms of technical specifications. I wish we could spend less time speaking with them about all the specifications at the beginning of the project. I had to do a lot of homework for it, but once we had a finalized plan, they ran with it.
