Race Through Space
The Winnona Partners team had the honor of collaborating with Science ATL to create the Race Through Space – Galaxy Edition mobile app! The app is free to download on the App Store and Google Play. The app was produced in partnership with Randstad, Emory University, and the Georgia Space Grant Consortium.
App Description
Become the first human ever to visit other galaxies by running millions of light years in what feels like 5 kilometers!
You’ve volunteered for the human trials of an intergalactic device that’s powered by your feet and defies the laws of physics. You will set out on a journey of discovery, meeting real galaxies in the cosmos and learning what makes them unique. If the technology holds together, your 5K trip will conclude with a visit to a supermassive black hole from which there is no escape! Hooray!
Race Through Space is a fitness experience designed to not only teach you about different celestial bodies but also to give you a sense of their actual distance, where 5 kilometers becomes proportional to nearly 55 million light years. The journey begins in the Milky Way, which is more than a tasty candy bar, but is also our home galaxy. You’ll run through various galaxies with names like Sombrero, Needle, Black Eye, and Whirlpool, culminating in a visit to the first black hole that has ever been photographed by humans, the supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy called M87.
This narrated audio adventure is designed to EDUTAIN with the option to listen to your own music between galactic stops as well as display actual images of the various heavenly bodies you pass. Brought to you by the (fake) SpaceNEXT Industries with help from (not fake) Science ATL, we are excited to transform a humdrum 5K into an all-out sciencey fun time! Even if you’re not a runner, we DARE you to download Race Through Space and walk it, bike it, ironic unicycle it, whatever!

Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the co-founder and co-executive director at Science ATL, a nonprofit organization that creates public science events that aim to bring people together.
What challenge were you trying to address with Winnona Partners?
We needed their team to develop a mobile and a web application for us.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Winnona Partners started their development work from scratch. For the mobile app, they pulled together a platform that imitated a physical space race — it was a complex product that needed audio language and distance tracking, allowing people to operate it as if they were running interactively throughout outer space.
The other product was a web app that functioned as a public science event that families could attend and enjoy all together. Winnona Partners helped us from the brainstorming to the development phase of the project. They built the site on WordPress and designed our logos for that product as well.
What is the team composition?
My main point of contact was Jonathan (CEO), but I also worked with another developer from their team.
How did you come to work with Winnona Partners?
A friend of mine recommended Winnona Partners to me after she saw my hiring ad on our neighborhood’s Facebook page. I found it convenient that they were a local team that was also just down my street, so it was an easy decision to make.
How much have you invested with them?
We spent about $12,000 on the development of both apps.
What is the status of this engagement?
The project ran from June 2020–March 2021. They completed the space app in October 2020, while the web app was accomplished in March 2021.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We received over 50 5-star reviews for our mobile app. Additionally, we got a lot of positive verbal feedback for its design and content. We didn’t have the numbers for the web app since there was no opportunity for our users to review it, but we heard a lot of nice things about its functionality and how fun it was to navigate through it. The products that Winnona Partners created for us were highly recognized by people for the positive user experience they got from trying them out.
How did Winnona Partners perform from a project management standpoint?
We mainly communicated via email and phone calls. Their team was really good at devising timelines, and I was good at following through — it was a beneficial and productive collaboration that allowed us to meet all our targets.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Winnona Partners created sleek and interactive apps that our users highly enjoyed. Additionally, they were a really fun team to work with, and that trait was mirrored in their work.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, I thought they were a perfect team.
