We went to Webs Optimization to build an app that allowed us to do live scoring at local archery events. We’ve seen this type of app at national levels and other sports.

At an archery event, there are typically four shooters in a group, and two of them have tablets with paper to call out the scores. One person verifies the result, and the other two write it down. There’s always an official scorecard and a backup one. The app will replace the backup scores.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Webs Optimization has built an Android and iOS application that lets four users register with their email addresses and phone numbers. One of the archers is added as the scorer, and the app sends a secure text with a code. Then, when they go into the app, it shows all the shooters, names, and more. When they enter the score, it immediately updates it to a website so family, friends, coaches, and people who want to watch the event can see the results and live rankings.

Right now, we’re still going through phases and trying to get the app up and running. The website will be free for users to watch live scores, but we’ll have a little pop-up so people can purchase advertising time on the website. They’re currently working on the user account. We want users to pay for yearly subscriptions and have auto-pay at the end of the year.

We’ve only worked with two people: a salesperson and the lead technical engineer. There are others behind the scenes working on different parts of the project.

We’ve done some testing, and we’re finalizing the website. The app is done, and everything is working and looking great.

We use Google Hangouts for most of our instant communication due to the time difference. The challenge has been coordinating times to talk, but it has been easy because they can send a question through Hangouts, and we can answer it in the morning. We typically meet around 9:00 p.m., which is 7:00 a.m. for them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re very flexible. The team didn’t have any information about archery, so we threw a lot at them and walked them through the entire process. We’d come back up with changes throughout development, and they’d jump on them and fix them pretty quickly.

Also, we didn’t have to pay any money upfront. We’ve had a phased approach. When a phase is completed, we all sign off on it, and then we pay.

My project manager was excellent. As the project picked up, I was in touch with them more and more frequently to review their work and answer any questions. That worked well for me, because there were a couple of things in my design brief that I hadn’t thought through all the way. It's been 4months since our application was available on play store and we have received an enormous response from the users. We have 1000+ downloads already. And we have also generated good revenue initially.

Working cycles need to be short to ensure you’re going in the right direction.

In terms of outcome, the quality is what I expected. For example, other developers I worked with previously would not do any proper planning in the beginning nor give appropriate updates along the way. They know what they are doing and ask questions to make sure that they thoroughly understand what they are supposed to do, not only in the planning phase, but also throughout the project.
