I'm Co-founder and Head of Product at FairArt. FairArt is an online marketplace for the secondary art market. We are creating a fairer, more profitable art market for all through artist royalties.

Initially, we needed to build a high-quality, custom MVP for our marketplace, using a modern technology stack of Next.js and Node.js. We had previously looked at "pre-built" options and had concluded the desired functionality could only be custom built. Our partnership with Webamboos has since continued past the MVP build.

We actually found out about them on Clutch! We held an extensive round of interviews with over 30 software development agencies all across Europe and South America. In the end, we decided to partner with Webamboos because the tech stack was great, the team was highly experienced and it was clear they understood that as an early stage startup, we would need to be flexible with features/designs changing as the MVP was being built (within reason). Additionally, we were able to decide with Webamboos which developers would be allocated to FairArt, based on the specific requirements for building a marketplace.

To begin with, we had a few meetings with the Project Manager with whom we refined the Product Requirements and identified the core functionality for the MVP. During this time, Webamboos used their expertise to suggest improvements and point out any potential tech blockers early on.

Once this was ready, the team built the MVP of the marketplace using a Javascript/TypeScript-based tech stack (Node.js / Next.js), while integrating a headless CMS (Strapi), payment processing (Stripe), and email API (SendGrid). As a product designer, I produced the designs and flows for the team to work on. Webamboos then converted the designs into functionality, working in 2-week sprints.

The core team consisted of 3-5 people, depending on the project period. These were: 1 project manager, 1-2 frontend developers, 1 backend developer, 1 QA.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Having officially launched a couple of months ago (after some closed beta testing), we have received excellent feedback from users. The quality definitely exceeds that of an MVP! Additionally, the platform is really stable, and we can now build new features on top of the initial scope.

We've been working with a fantastic Project Manager called Raluca. She can combine technical expertise with detailed documentation, and ensures everything runs smoothly. During the MVP build stage, we had weekly calls to review the functionality of new features and agree on upcoming work. We also had a slack channel with all the relevant team members, which we used for day-to-day communications.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The team actively suggests improvements rather than simply building without asking questions. This collaboration is key to creating great products, that are both technically robust and pleasant from a UX point of view. When we did run into issues (which is unavoidable when building a complex product), we could always count on the team to adapt and come up with solutions.

This includes both allocating additional resources for important fixes and sharing knowledge from highly experienced team members that were working on a different project. Also, it is clear that everyone who works there is passionate about what they do, and truly wants your business to do well. This applies to everyone from the CEO (Max) to the PM (Raluca), Tech Lead (Arpad), and all the developers that have worked on FairArt at various stages (Alex, Daniel, Lucian, Laris, Mihai & Vladut. Much appreciated!

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Nothing comes to mind; I highly recommend them to any startup looking to build a high-quality MVP. We continue to work with them as we build new features and improve our product.

Our main goal was to launch the first release, which was crucial. As they managed to do that within the estimated timeline, it was perfect for us.

They had a very consistent process at the beginning which is called Product Discovery Workshop. After the workshop, we had everything we need to follow the development, a Gantt chart, estimations split by feature, and a part of the UI/UX design & prototype. All these made us feel very comfortable during the development as we knew what to expect.

Even though they are a small company, the level of their professionalism and all the processes proved to us they really know how to develop our product. I would like also to mention that the communication with their Product Manager was awesome. I like to work with her.

The user experience for our internal users will definitely improve a lot upon the release of the project. As well we estimate that the developed platform will make our data scientists be more efficient in their day to day tasks

We had weekly check in meetings and their communication is really good. We are always in sync so we can assure both our business needs and know how are shared with their team and as well so we can provide feedback on the existing development. We communicate both via slack and conference calls.

After launching the new platform, we saw an improvement in the conversion rate caused by the optimization of the User Experience. We also saw an increase in organic traffic. The communication with the team was great.
