BookingBug - Ruby on Rails Project

Business Challenge:

Booking Bug was developed by a distributed team of designers and developers based in the UK and USA. Building on the platform that had been developed, Booking Bug required an eCommerce solution and an API to be developed. They were also looking for plugins which would allow partners to seamlessly integrate with the Booking Bug platform. Starting from these requirements, we have supported Booking Bug through its growth and evolution since 2008 and multiple funding rounds. Booking Bug is a leader in its space and a great example of well-written code.

Solution:

We provided a team of Senior RoR developers to Booking Bug who could quickly understand the developed platform and build on it to meet the client requirements. An API was developed and several plugins which allow integration with sites were written in various languages. Since 2008, we have supported Booking Bug's evolution and further developed the platform...

Coffee Sender - Ruby on Rails Project

Business Challenge:

CoffeeSender is a platform which allows users to send coffees in one of three ways, through a Salesforce integration, by copying an email address into the bcc field or by using the one-click method from coffeesender.com. We were asked to build the platform and integrate APIs such as Salesforce.com.

Solution:

We first ensured that all three methods worked for sending coffees by conducting rigorous testing. Starting with a Salesforce integration and then moving onto the other methods where mailgun picks up the email and sends a voucher to the coffee recipient, we built and tested the systems to ensure it worked seamlessly. The system can integrate with any coffee retailer and currently it is integrated with Starbucks.

Technologies Used: Ruby on Rails

Appshed - iOS/Android

Business Challenge:

Appshed wanted to allow users to build custom mobile apps for iOS and Android in three easy steps using a website. Users would be able to simply choose a template, customise the design and add the content and Appshed would automatically create a mobile app and submit it to the Appstore or Android Market. We were asked to build the platform and do the necessary development so the iOS and Android apps could be generated automatically.

Solution:

Staring with a single iOS developer, the team grew to include a dedicated Android developer as well as an HTML5 expert and support from Quality Assurance resources. We were able to deliver a working platform which allowed users to create mobile applications and have them submitted via the web interface within 4 months.

Technologies Used: iOS, Android

Shutl - Ruby on Rails Project

Business Challenge:

Shutl wanted to let shoppers choose to receive online/in-store purchases within as little as 90 minutes (“Shutl Now”) or within a 1 hour delivery window of their choice (‘Shutl Later”). In 2009 Shutl chose VeriQual to build their RoR platform which would aggregate excess courier capacity by exposing an API to couriers and integrate with retailers to provide the Shutl delivery service to consumers. We also built various PHP based plugins which could integrate with popular e-Commerce platforms like Magento.

Solution:

We provided a core team of RoR developers as well as support from PHP developers, Front-End developers and Quality Assurance resources. The platform was built in a period of about 10 months and the first trial was successfully launched with Argos in the UK. Shutl has since integrated with many more retailers and we have continued to provide RoR development, Front-End development and Quality Assurance...

VOLVO H.R.Owen

Business Challenge:

H.R. Owen asked VeriQual to develop a CMS based site in time for the launch of a new Volvo model. Search Engine Optimisation was paramount as the site would serve as one of the main marketing assets for HR Owen to inform clients about the upcoming Volvo cars.

Solution:

A Custom CMS was developed for H.R. Owen which allowed them to update the details of the offers quickly and easily and also took advantage of Search Engine Optimisation to drive traffic to the site.

WeighFun - iPad Game

Business Challenge

WeighFun teaches children multiplication and addition in the setting of a Farmer’s Market. The player uses an old style weighing scale to drag and drop fruits and vegetables onto the scale, then makes it balance by putting the correct number of counter weights. They can then make purchases by paying the correct amount for the fruits and vegetables, whcih the children have to calculate themselves.

Solution

We used Cocos2D as the game engine. The physics of the weighing scale had to be tweaked to make it function as one would expect in a real world situation. The graphics were done in-house and adhered to the iOS Human Interface Guidelines. Making the game intuitive for children was paramount and the high number of downloads of the game are a testament to the success in achieving this objective. The game has been downloaded by many Education Institutes who have found it a useful tool to teach basic arithmetic to children...

NutHunt - Android Game

Business Challenge:

We were asked to build a casual game which could be enjoyed by all ages and was intuitive enough to start playing instantly. We developed the idea of a bird trying to gather something to eat, which a squirrel wants to steal. The squirrel would try to hit the bird with rocks in an attempt to get the food. Other obstacles and enemies would also appear to try to get the bird to drop the food.

Solution:

The graphics for the game were designed in-house and after several usability tests, we developed a method of controlling the flight of the bird which was intuitive yet did not obstruct the player’s view of the screen. We also provided customisation options and a points reward system which make the game fully customisable and addictive.

Technologies Used: Android

BinoBalls - iPad Game

Business Challenge:

We developed this game to showcase our graphics and game development capabilities. BinoBalls teaches children about Binary numbers in a fun and visually exciting way. The player has to collect the correct number of gumballs by dropping them from glass jars and send them looping and swerving through pinball machine like tracks. If they fail to collect the correct number of gumballs before the timer runs out, they cannot proceed to the next amazing level.

Solution:

To build this game, we first kept usability and interaction in mind. Keeping the Human Interface guidelines set by Apple in mind, we developed graphics for the game in-house and aimed to make it intuitive for a child to play. The game was developed in a very short period of time once the graphics were finalised and was tested thoroughly before being submitted to the app store.

Keynoir - RoR Project

Business Challenge:

Keynoir is an exclusive buying club that provides access to a great lifestyle packed with indulgent and fun experiences in major cities around the world. Users can buy lifestyle experiences (such as hotels, restaurant bookings and spa days) and more "unusual and secret things". One offer a day with a limited time window and limited quantity of offers drives adoption and not everyone can become a member, keeping it exclusive.

Solution:

We developed an RoR site which was based on the business model made popular by Groupon, but presented in a different way which was far more exclusive. The site was tested extensively and a robust platform was built which undoubtedly helped in the acquisition of Keynoir by city media empire Time Out Magazine

MenuSpring - OS/Android Project

Business Challenge:

MenuSpring's founder chose VeriQual as the technology solution provider after evaluating several software development companies. MenuSpring wanted to bring the world of food to internet user's fingertips by providing restaurant and menu information for every restaurant in London. Users would be able to review, rate, take pictures and share their restaurant discoveries with friends over Facebook and Twitter. With more than 800,000 dishes from over 8,500 restaurants across London, MenuSpring now makes the world of food accessible via a website as well as iPhone and Android apps developed by VeriQual.

Solution:

We chose CodeIgnitor as the platform to build the website. With a dedicated team of developers, quality Assurance resources and designers, we created the website which asked for many innovations, such as segmenting London into areas on an interactive map, collapsable menus which worked intuitively,...

The new app has generated $1,000 in revenue and rarely requires maintenance for bugs or faulty code. VeriQual prioritizes user feedback and delivers reliably exceptional products. The team's dynamic collaboration approach allowed them to offer constructive insights during the development process.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company.

I work for an IT [information technology] firm. We develop custom applications.

What is your position?

I’m one of the co-founders.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

Could you describe the business challenges you were attempting to address when you first approached VeriQual?

Design, build, and maintain a custom Web and Salesforce application that lets you digitally send Starbucks gift cards.

SOLUTION

Could you describe the scope of work in greater detail?

We conceptualized the custom app, but they actually built it. They handled the design, development, testing, and enhancement. We collaborated closely with them throughout the process, from a strategic and project management stance.

How did you select VeriQual as your solution partner?

A year and a half ago, I looked through Elance and oDesk for 20 or 30 applicants, and rounded them down to the top five. They had some great experience. We were really in search of a vendor with a lot of Salesforce experience. We also wanted a competitive quote. We evaluated their past experience and their management styles before making the final decision. We were the most impressed with VeriQual.

What technologies were utilized during this project?

Ruby on Rails and JavaScript were the major ones. They also had experience with Salesforce. A separate project required native iOS development for an iPhone app we’re building.

Could you provide a general cost estimate for this project?

To date, close to $10,000.

When was this project completed?

We launched six months ago.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

In terms of results, could you share any statistics, metrics, or user feedback that would demonstrate the effectiveness of their work?

My app was approved, so that was a fairly big win. I’ve gotten some customers that have generated more than $1,000 of revenue for me, which, for an average sale of $7, is quite a bit of customer usage. We also receive minimal support requests for defects and bugs, which is great. Their deliverables are consistently polished. They’re also great at incorporating user feedback into their workflows and deliverables.

When working with VeriQual, is there anything you’d consider unique about their approach that distinguishes them from other vendors?

Their location has been very helpful, because they’re in a different time zone, so they’re able to work while I’m asleep. They have a diverse team that can cover multiple subject areas. I’m not simply giving them instructions; they’re actively contributing valuable insights and recommendations. That’s a very different kind of dynamic than I’m used to, at least with other IT vendors. That’s definitely something different.

Feedback summary:

The Magento platform was implemented smoothly and performs consistently well. VeriQual's adaptable project management, fluid communication style, and broad base of experience have enabled them to deliver exactly what was promised despite tight schedules and budgets.

BACKGROUND

Could you briefly describe your organization?

I work for a very small boutique software development firm. Our business model involves finding clients here and outsourcing their development. At the moment, all of our client development initiatives are delegated to VeriQual. We’ve been doing this for the last couple of years. They’ve done three e-commerce sites and one content-focused site.

What is your position?

I am the director.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

Could you describe the business challenges you were attempting to address when you initiated the relationship with VeriQual?

The challenge was data migration between two separate websites. They provided us with templates and the technical support we needed. We collected data from our users to populate the Excel templates, and then we’d go about organizing, tabulating, and migrating the data we needed. The process wasn’t overly complicated, but it was certainly time consuming and required considerable attention to detail.

SOLUTION

Could you describe the scope of this project?

Their role almost exclusively revolved around custom development on the Magento platform. We provided only the basic requirements, and they were responsible for the deployment.

How did you select VeriQual as your solution partner for this endeavor?

I’ve known VeriQual for a very long time. I’ve known Samir Feroze [the CEO of VeriQual] for a number of years. When we determined that outsourcing our development initiatives was the way to go, I decided at that point to approach VeriQual with our work. I knew that had a great reputation for delivering quality work, so it seemed natural to go to them with our challenges.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this project in monetary terms?

The total cost between £6,500 and £10,000 [$11,000 and $17,000].

When was this project completed?

We finished up early this year; probably by the end of January or the beginning of February [of 2014].

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

In terms of results, could you share any statistics, metrics, or user feedback that would demonstrate the effectiveness of their work?

That’s difficult to pinpoint because the end users are ultimately unaware that the application’s development was outsourced. I can, however, tell you that the client has been very impressed with the quality of the application and its performance. They’ve been quite content with the way that the development process has moved forward. We’ve run into minimal issues along the way, and some of them were on the client-side. Overall, both our team and the stakeholder have been very satisfied with the application.

When working with VeriQual, is there anything you’d consider unique about their approach or development methodology that distinguishes them from other vendors?

Basically, they deliver what they say they’re going to. That may sound somewhat cliche, but I’ve worked with a lot of outsourcing vendors, and my experience has been somewhat negative when it comes to their ability to deliver. Particularly in circumstances with more traditional Indian outsourcing companies, I’ve been in numerous situations where they’ve promised a certain solution and were completely incapable of fulfilling it. This can happen due to poor project management, incorrect or insufficient experience, or an inability to communicate with their clients effectively. Honestly, there could be a whole host of reasons why they’ve been unable to meet our needs, but the point has been that the majority of vendors I’ve worked with have left more to be desired. Software Developers India doesn’t fall into that category. I’ve been consistently impressed with their ability to deliver our assignments and tasks on time, within budget, and of exceptional quality. That’s all we can ask of our outsourced developers.

In retrospect, are there any areas you think they could improve on as a service provider?

I haven’t experienced any disappointments working with them, at least so far. As a result, it’s hard for me to offer any kind of recommendations for improvement. I’m sure there are areas that they could improve, but I’m not personally familiar with what those areas are.
