About the Code built the design of a frontend dashboard in React.js. They simplified the code and implemented a framework that is easy to modify and maintain internally.
The MVP met all requirements and received positive feedback from stakeholders. About the Code delivered high-quality code and products at great value. Despite ambiguities in a few deadlines, they finished the project in a timely fashion and communicated effectively in daily stand-ups throughout.
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this
client over the phone. Below is an edited
transcript.
BACKGROUND
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I am a managing partner and technical specialist at a custom software developer. We provide software solutions to technology startups.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with About the Code?
We engaged About the Code to help design and develop a JavaScript frontend dashboard for a third-party client.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
About the Code helped build a dashboard that provides real-time data of oil and gas fracking sites and equipment. Users can customize logical sites and how they view the data. We brought in About the Code to implement a complex and aesthetically-pleasing design to the dashboard.
About the Code first designed a diagram of the desired system. Once the client then approved of it, they then built the frontend in React.js.
What is the team composition?
We worked with a developer, a project manager, an account manager, and a designer.
How did you come to work with About the Code?
We found them through a recommendation from a colleague that they had done quality work for. We sat down with About the Code and explained our project and needs. They engaged quickly with minimal guidance.
How much have you invested with them?
We spent about $30,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
The project lasted from August–November 2018.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
About the Code simplified the dashboard and made an MVP that is easy for the client to modify and maintain in-house—a vital concern to our client. Their code quality was phenomenal, and I’d call the engagement a huge success.
How did About the Code perform from a project management standpoint?
Their project manager performed well; I have no concerns about their process. About the Code delivered within the time and budget constraints of the project. The team acquired all necessary information and took the initiative in deciding the project’s direction once we brought them in. We communicated with them daily with a 5–15-minute standup where we went over progress and addressed any roadblocks. The meetings took place via phone and involved occasional screensharing as needed. We also tracked progress with Jira, which I found valuable.
What did you find most impressive about them?
I appreciated About The Code's initiative. They helped us figure out exactly what we needed and where we were struggling before starting the development. The team then carried out work using an agile methodology which allowed me to focus on more critical tasks.
Are there any areas they could improve?
On occasion, About the Code missed deadlines, but they are improving their time estimates. There also occasionally were language barrier issues, but they always made sure to bring in the right people to meetings so everyone could understand each other.
Any advice for potential customers?
Meet with them every day. I found it valuable to hand off a task to their team late in the day; they can work on it overnight and then you can pick it up in the morning. Be prepared with project management tools in advance as well.

transcript.
BACKGROUND
Introduce your business and what you do there.
Our company assembles software development teams to augment or spearhead projects in the United States. I’m a business development and client advisor.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with About the code?
A client needed one frontend developer to round out a project. I approached a list of potential vendors to fill that gap in their team.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
They were responsible for the entire frontend of a fairly massive project. In all, they oversaw about 20% of the project and put in many hours of frontend development in AngularJS, Node.js, and Redux. The client established some of the code before the frontend developer joined the project, so they had to adapt to the environment and the stack.
What is the team composition?
We used one frontend developer for this project.
How did you come to work with About the code?
I met one of their co-founders and have done business with companies in Eastern Europe. The quality of their products is valuable to us, and, based on the resumes we reviewed with our client, we decided to use their resources.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with them in April 2018 and completed the project at the beginning of November 2018.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
The developer did an outstanding job. Based on the exit interview the client and I conducted after the project’s completion, not only would we both rehire anyone from About the code, we would highly recommend them to anyone else. They rated very highly in all categories.
How did About the code perform from a project management standpoint?
They were not involved in project management; our client’s project manager oversaw their work. I participated in the majority of scrum calls, where their communication was excellent. They understood the problem and the technology, and were able to effectively convey solutions.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Their efficiency and the value of the work they provide stand out. They work quickly and provide a level of excellence that exceeds the cost.
Are there any areas they could improve?
From my experience, I can’t think of anything they should improve.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
They are very professional and very thorough. I would recommend them highly to anyone.
