Treeview provides ongoing AR/VR development services for a medical equipment manufacturing company. The team has worked on three projects building XR applications using HoloLens and creating CAD models.
The client is satisfied with Treeview’s quality work, which has amazed doctors worldwide. The apps are the client’s main attractions and have increased device sales. The team delivers on time, accommodates changes, and communicates regularly. Overall, they collaborate and make excellent suggestions.
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
BACKGROUND
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m a principal software specialist for a medical equipment manufacturing company. Our head office is in Minneapolis, but we have branches in 149 countries worldwide. We have equipment in the market for almost all departments, such as diabetic, spine, cardio, and gastro. We’re one of the world’s leading medical equipment manufacturers.
I’m responsible for devising the XR strategy for medical devices. We’re doing XR applications so doctors can get trained on the latest equipment because many doctors are proficient on existing devices. When new devices come into the market, we use XR technology to train those doctors to upgrade themselves to the latest technology in the market.
Additionally, we have an academy with its own curated content learning modules for all the procedures on the server. We’ve integrated our XR applications through the academy; it’s the first of its kind. Only people who are enrolled in our academy can access it.
Recently, there’s been a change in structure, so I’ve also taken a project management role.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Treeview?
We did another project for cardiac management, which was a training simulation for a microimplant. It was the first XR project using HoloLens, and we had to set up a new structure and team for development.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
This is our third project with Treeview; we have a product launch happening in September. Our latest project was CAD models of the devices, which are engineering models.
Initially, we didn’t have any specific project data documentation ready. We only gave Treeview our academy course. We picked up the information from the academy and provided them with that essential brief. Treeview was able to start the project with that minimum input. They came up with the project structure, and over time, they enhanced it.
Treeview did a rough document and estimation and started working based on that. They anticipated new additions because doctors might see the application for the first time and develop new requirements after their review.
What is the team composition?
We predominantly communicate with three teammates, but they have seven people on the team. We have weekly calls with Gonzalo (Software Engineer) and Horacio (Founder & CEO). We can also contact the 3D development team. When we need clarification from them, we call Raimundo (Technical Artist).
How did you come to work with Treeview?
We searched online and gathered information about several vendors out of Clutch. Based on the reviews we collected, we shortlisted 10 companies. At the time, Treeview was in fourth place, but now they’ve gone up to second or third. Out of the 10 companies, we shortlisted the last three.
We were looking for a company that was budget-friendly and proficient in HoloLens. Treeview had experience handling HoloLens and answered our questions based on our requirements, so we were interested in them. Ultimately, Treeview toped the others; they performed well and had a good pitch.
How much have you invested with them?
The project cost depends on its complexity. The latest project for spine therapy was around $85,000 in the beginning. However, we were asked by the SMEs and doctors to include specific animations to explain the procedure more clearly, so we accommodated the development and had to spend more on resources. We submitted a change request, and the extra cost was $4,500.
After the new equipment was added, doctors asked to replace the latest equipment in the procedure, so we raised a second change request for $15,000. All the previous projects were on par with the cost.
What is the status of this engagement?
We’re close to completing the third project in April 2024. On average, we take six months per project, so we’ve been with them for a year and a half.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Nobody knew the outcome or how much impact it would make. Treeview has churned out an application that has brought in audible amazement from doctors and medical professionals.
We used to present the first application at conferences with the smallest pacemaker we’ve developed. Doctors were amazed when we showcased it across 7–8 countries, which directly increased the device's sales. Moreover, it gained momentum, and we had close to 1,300 downloads from the Apple Store in five months.
We started getting requests from different operations units. We did the first project for the cardiac rhythm management unit, and then the spine division came in and said they wanted something for them as well. Overall, it created a lot of sensation, and that’s how the third project began.
This XR is one of the main attractions in our experience center in Singapore. We have a separate experience center for visitors where we present the solutions to the user.
How did Treeview perform from a project management standpoint?
During the initial two projects, Treeview was flexible and accommodating. There was no interference from our side unless there were heavy changes. Nonetheless, they delivered on time, and we never found issues with their timeline.
When changes are needed, they observe the costs and absorb some of them. We’ve had weekly calls since the project started so we can have constant updates on the progress, which helps us share ideas, collaborate, and accommodate the product.
Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?
We mainly communicate with Gonzalo; he’s our primary contact. We usually reach out to him if we need any clarification or information. Any immediate information should be passed on to him. We typically don’t wait for the weekly call to pass the information to Gonzalo.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They have a robust 3D team that understands our requirements. I have a 3D animation background, and I’ve worked on AR applications for engineering companies. Therefore, I understand the team's skill set and know when their efforts are nominal or overshooting. They provide all the information we want and understand the concepts, even if it’s the first time they’re doing medical applications.
Moreover, Treeview volunteers and provides significant initiatives and suggestions. For example, all the applications we’ve done so far are integrated with our academy; they came up with that proposal. We didn’t expect that.
As a medical company, we had many processes and teams with whom we had to complete the login integration. We had a separate team handling our employees' login and another handling external users' login, so we had to liaise with each member to do the integration every time.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, I haven’t seen any need for improvements. We’ve been getting all the inputs of whatever we need on time.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
The mutual learning for both of us is that the visualization has to be more robust. Visualizing a medical procedure is very complex because it’s organic matter, and we both got stuck at some stages. We couldn’t visualize the steps before starting the course of the phase. We then realized the bottleneck and what we had to clear.
