Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the principal and creative director of UNIT partners, and we are a brand strategy and design firm in San Francisco.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with T&D Tax Service?

We worked with them to file our yearly taxes as well as to consult on a variety of needs surrounding the tax dynamics for small businesses.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They have helped us file our taxes for quite a few years, as well as our more day to day bookkeeping and then providing insight and advice on any financial issues that arise throughout our work.

What is the team composition?

Tim is our primary tax lead, and Derek handles the majority of our bookkeeping.

How did you come to work with T&D Tax Service?

One of their owners worked at the accounting service that we used previously. We really enjoyed working with him, so when we found out that he was going out on his own, we followed him to his new business.

How much have you invested with them?

We spend close to $9,000 a year with them, which over the time we’ve worked with them has probably added up to around $100,000 in total.

What is the status of this engagement?

The new company opened in 2008, and we have worked with them ever since.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The biggest advantage for us is that we are a very creative organization, and they have been able to break all of the numbers involved in their work down in a way that makes sense to us and can help guide our business and financial decisions.

One particular challenge that we aced was when my business partner left the company to go work with one of our clients. When that happened, T&D Tax Services were right there with me every step of the way, helping to ensure that our partnership was properly dissolved and that I was setting up the next steps for my company to be successful.

How did T&D Tax Service perform from a project management standpoint?

We communicate with Derek close to once a month, and we talk to Tim closer to every 2–3 months, depending on the needs for that tax year. They always get back to you in a really timely manner if you have any questions, and they make their requests as simple as possible so that working with them never feels like an added responsibility on your end.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I think the personal relationship that they provide is the best thing about working with them. A lot of people know tax law and legal information, but it has always been clear that they are a true partner with you and are invested in your personal success as well as your business.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could potentially be a little bit more proactive about the feedback that they provide. They do a great job of evaluating from year to year and figuring out what you can do better, but in some cases, knowing some of those things in advance might be helpful as well.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Just keep an open and honest channel of communication with them so that they can provide you with as much support as possible.
