Tanen Advertising began in 1985 in New York City. The founders, Ilene Cohn Tanen and Norman Tanen, left senior creative positions with Geers Gross, a British-owned agency, and Benton & Bowles and opened offices in the upcoming fashionable Flatiron district in NYC.
During the first ten years, the agency built on its general advertising heritage, developing campaigns for Crate & Barrel, Revlon, Citibank, Workbench, NBC, and McGraw-Hill, among others.
