Creating multiple AWS environment sizes for different use cases
Read how SuperAdmins increased infrastructure automation and optimized the workload for Carnegie Technologies: https://superadmins.com/aws-case-study-grpc/
Challenge: The client wanted to accelerate the production of their next-gen platforms, migrate their existing microservices from bare-metal servers to cloud-native servers, increase automation in infrastructure management, and optimize the distribution of different workloads.
Project overview: A B2B application implemented as a single and multi-tenant environment on AWS with custom builds for mobile apps for both iOS and Android devices that communicate with the back-end services via API. Each application is custom-built for a specific customer and the AWS environment is created in an automated way with specific parameters. The application ecosystem is written in Go and consists of six different micro-services each playing a different role. All the micro-services communicate via gRPC and connect to a PostgreSQL database (except for the front-end application which is written in AngularJS).

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the CEO of COFA Games. We’re a team of 10 people working on multiple games. The current one is Awakening of Heroes, a 5V5 mobile fighting game. The game is in a soft launch and has around one million downloads.
What challenge were you trying to address with SuperAdmins?
They’ve been helping us with a few tasks related to hosting for the last couple of years.
What was the scope of their involvement?
SuperAdmins set up our complete multiplayer backend structure on Google Cloud. From there, they ensured that it had good stability and that we could scale up as we attracted more players, as well as scale down during the night when traffic is lower.
They also implemented a downtime monitoring system, and helped us with several other things, like load balancing and security.
They kept hosting efficiency in mind, too. Hosting is expensive, so we always need to optimize resources. They set up hosting in four locations: Europe, the US, Asia, and South America.
Overall, they’ve set up databases, the PHP-driven API server, and the gaming servers.
How did you come to work with SuperAdmins?
They’re one of the most promising companies in our region, and we’d known each other for a long time. SuperAdmins is well known for hosting services. We sent them an email, and they responded in a few minutes, telling us what they could and couldn’t do.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent under $5,000 on their services, excluding hosting expenses.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with SuperAdmins in March 2018, and it’s ongoing. We’re not working together actively, but we go to them if we have a question or need support.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
SuperAdmins is extremely efficient, from my point of view. They’ve delivered more than we expect. Beyond just doing the work, they consulted us on the best possible solution for our needs. The infrastructure they set up is very reliable. We haven’t noticed any problems so far.
One of their values is that they stand behind what they say and we can rely on their input. They never second-guess themselves.
How did SuperAdmins perform from a project management standpoint?
We’ve had short deadlines, but everything is delivered on time and on budget, with consulting on top of that.
Their response time is super quick, in the span of a few minutes. We’ve worked with lots of companies, and this isn’t usually the case.
We’ve had some brainstorming sessions with SuperAdmins, and the best solution from their side wasn’t always the best one from ours. We’ve had to find compromises between functionality, cost, and speed. We’re using ActiveCollab internally, but we just use email with SuperAdmins.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Their knowledge of the services they provide and planning accuracy make SuperAdmins stand out. They excel at communication, which is very important for us.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Everything has been done as planned. We haven’t gone back to them for changes.
Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?
Having open discussion sessions can be helpful for both parties. From the client-side, it’s important to provide as much data as possible, including diagrams, and set up calls to validate assumptions and create a final execution plan.

Introduce your business and what you do there.
We’re a full-service creative agency. We work with clients across the hospitality, real estate, lifestyle, beauty, and fashion industries. I’m a digital executive producer.
What challenges were you trying to address with SuperAdmins?
We were building a large e-commerce website for one of our clients. We wanted to ensure we had the proper infrastructure setup. We wanted a secure, scalable platform that allowed for continuous integration and deployment.
What was the scope of their involvement?
It was really all around the infrastructure set up, so working in Amazon Web Services to build all of the environments and the deployment flows for code, database, and backups for the three environments: development, staging, and production.
What is the team composition?
I worked directly with two technical leads.
How did you come to work with SuperAdmins?
I worked with them at my previous job.
What is the status of this engagement?
We worked together from April 2020–July 2020.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
It’s been smooth for our development team to continue deployment. We haven’t run into any hiccups. Everything is working well.
How did SuperAdmins perform from a project management standpoint?
They were great in regards to project management. We added them to our company Slack. They’re in a different timezone, but they’re really flexible. They worked with us at whatever time to get what was needed. We had ad-hoc meetings.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They’re really smart and highly skilled at what they do. They have a high level of familiarity with some of the more complex aspects of website technology.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I don’t really know, nothing really jumps out.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
It’s helpful to have solid technical expertise on your end to get the most out of the project. They’re collaborative, so if you come to the project with knowledge, it will help them build the right thing for you.
The work delivered by SuperAdmins has blown away the client’s expectations and the quality is impressive. They bring confidence and reliability to the engagement. Maintaining a strong level of communication and dedication makes them a valuable partner.
