Realising better futures through design
Hi! We are Studio Carbon. A collective endeavour of a group of creatives. We are designers, storytellers and system thinkers. We believe in the ubiquitous nature of design. Just as carbon is a fundamental element of the world we experience, design is fundamental to how people think and create. Every small action, every decision we make, sculpts our version of reality, and how others perceive it. Get in touch, and let's create the best version out there.

Design Innovation of electric bikes for commuters
BRANDING - CADENCE
Epick seeks to be the face of a global shift towards conscious and sustainable mobility. As a brand of electric bikes, it envisions creating a community that drives this change and invites one and all to be the shift. This concept is integral to the brand of Epick Bikes, and is aptly portrayed with this logo concept. ◼ Being an electric bike brand, it is important to showcase and celebrate bikes. Cadence does just that, by showing an abstraction of a bike pedal in its pictogram. The pedal is slightly shifted, a subtle nod to the brand statement of #betheshift.
ICONIC SILHOUETTE
Derived from a thorough bred research, the necessity of a distinct silhouette is undeniable. The meticulously crafted bodywork along with its unique quad-frame makes for a distinct silhouette. The absence of the seat tube makes for a one of a kind take in Epick's segment, an icon in the making.
SCULPTED QUAD FRAME
The Quad Frame comprises of several meticulously crafted details each revealed at different viewpoints of the bike. The absence of the seat tube coupled with the contrasting proportions of the Downtube makes for a sight to behold. The Frame has one continuous crease running through the Frame's mid-volume. The crease acts as a visual partition to the outer and inner surface of the frame. The surfaces are sculpted for touch one that would engage the rider in a multisensorial experience unlike anyother bike frame.

Communication Design & Visual Identity for Bhanzu
THE CARDIOD
At first glance, the Bhanzu logo is seen as a well-balanced, distinct and simple logo. As wedelve deeper, the brand identifier reveals many more metaphors and representations within itself. The combination of a steady and comfortable wordmark, along with a playful and compelling pictogram makes for a logo that perfectly portrays Bhanzu’s brand persona.
Bhanzu’s logo is the epitome of mathematical elegance, and rightly so. It is derived from the beautiful equation of a cardioid. This planar curve is formed by tracing a point on a circle revolving around another circle. This is similar to the Earth’s revolution around the sun, with us as the points. Year after year, each of us traces a cardioid in space, marking the progress of time. The logo is a reminder of how mathematics is ubiquitous in nature, and how we are all connected. The cardioid that makes up the pictogram, is a subtle abstraction of the letter “B”, which stands for Bhanzu. This epicycloid was named after the greek word for heart, “Kardia” and we can see why. A subtle representation of heart, the logo also stands for our love and passion for the subject, and our mission to spread it among new learners and enthusiasts.
As the primary brand identifier for Bhanzu, the logo does a beautiful job of hiding its
multilayered analogies under a simple form. It is as simple as you see, and as meaningful as you want it to be. With fun, bold and clean visuals, the Cardioid manages to elicit all the right emotions, while also portraying exactly what the brand does - combining math and magic into a single cusp called Bhanzu.

Brand Ethos and Communication Design for Josler
Logo Tale
The pictorial mark represents the fluidic nature of hydrocarbons, Josler’s area of expertise. The droplet shape hints at the fluidic, youthful and approachable nature of the company.
A unique property of hydrocarbons is that they are volatile, representing youthful energy and change. The same is infused in the shape. The shape portrays a lit wick in a diya, bringing a feeling of auspiciousness, goodwill and positivity. The organic shape alludes to its relation to the environment, with a youthful vibe that is meant for a modern connect with all stakeholders.
The wordmark has been specifically paired with the shape in stark contrast, with its boldness, showing stability and trust, which comes from a company that has stood the test of time. the typeface has curves that harmonize and sync perfectly with the nature of the brand.

Please describe your company and your position there.
Bioca is a Construction-technology firm. BIOCA produces carbon-negative panels from hempcrete. These are designed for rapid manufacturing, assembly, and disassembly. I am part of the founding team and Head of Business Development
For what projects/services did your company hire Studio Carbon, and what were your goals?
The project started with us hiring Studio Carbon for building our Business Ethos and Brand. From articulating the company’s DNA with Vision, Mission, Values, and USP to translating that into a Visual brand that can be used across all our communication channels. This work is specifically important for the fundraising we are doing with investors. Studio Carbon also designed our Investor Pitch Deck for us.
This relationship then evolved into us hiring Studio Carbon to design and develop our company Website. Apart from design and development, the Studio Carbon team was involved in content development for the website too. Eventually, we expanded our relationship to hire them for doing Design-led market research and identify a clear market-positing and marketing strategy, and stakeholder network for establishing Bioca in the Netherlands market.
How did you select this vendor?
One of the co-founders of Studio Carbon was known to us on a personal level. We were aware of the prodigious work that they were doing, so it had to be them when it comes to our own project requirements regarding the design and other aspects.
Describe the scope of their work in detail, including any steps and the final deliverables.
- Discovery calls and Business Strategy
- Company’s Vision, Mission, Values, USP
- Brand Identity and Visual Brand Language
- Market positioning, market strategy, communication strategy, stakeholder network
- Comprehensive pitch deck for investors
- Business design
- UI/UX for the website Branding
There are many biobased builders in the world, and many of them work with Hempcrete. Through the Ethos and Brand design, we were addressing the challenge of identifying our USP and market fit which helps us stand out from the competition and be desirable for end customers Website Development - Our biggest challenge was limited funds.
Thus we worked very closely with the Studio Carbon team to develop a website that tells our story and builds a lot of credibility, with efficient use of design and development. Market Strategy - We are based in South Africa and have very little understanding of the Dutch market. Thus Studio Carbon helped us understand and investigate the market, build a network of potential buyers and partners, and create a communication strategy to reach out to each of them.
How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
We had one main point of contact that advised us and drove the project forward, but each individual part of the project was led by its creative expert. Ethos design and business design were led by the Systems Design Expert and their team. Communications Design was led by the identity and design expert, supported by their team. UI/UX for the website was led by the UI/UX expert, supported by their team.
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
We now have all the tools required to proceed with Fundraising, using the pitch deck that was designed by Studio Carbon. As a result of business design, we were able to develop a team of 5 people, including a local CEO.
We were pleased with how we are connecting with Business Development Leads. Most importantly, we now have a clearer picture relating to the kind of investors to pitch based on the kind of business After the complete exercise, we also pivoted from a Builder/Architect firm to a Construction Technology Firm.
Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.
For the sake of clarity and ease of communication, we had one main point of contact who managed the various specialised teams. The project workflow was very efficient. We were communicating through Slack and online meetings, which made it very easy to know the status of the project.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
Their transparent and communicative team is their best attribute. They’re great partners to work with because they’re responsive and swift. In addition, their design resources are wonderful because they commit to getting exactly what we want.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
I don’t think so. They are doing great!
