About StreamScan
Founded in 2011, Montreal-based StreamScan is the brainchild of founder and leading Cyber Security researcher Dr Karim Ganame. Karim’s vision was that there had to be an approach to cybersecurity that could make enterprise-level protection available to all sizes of organizations. StreamScan’s team developed the CDS network monitoring platform as the backbone of the offering. But over the first few years the team realized that most small to medium-sized organizations simply did not have the security team to manage and operate the system. To respond to this need, streamScan launched it’s MDR solution. For what projects/services did your company hire StreamScan?
Like many SMEs in Quebec, we were hit in 2018 by a cyber attack that significantly affected our operations. We then became aware of the growing importance of cybersecurity, particularly in a context of Industry 4.0 where connected technologies are found everywhere in the organization. This vast connected network represents as many potential entry points for cyber hackers.
With a home alarm system, door and window detectors are not always sufficient, so motion detectors are added. At the IT level, there are tools playing a similar role by monitoring the network to detect in real time any abnormal behavior between the various connected devices and raise the alert. We trusted the friendly StreamScan team to implement this kind of solution for us and I am honestly very satisfied with the result.
SOLUTION
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?
We analyzed several cybersecurity solutions and we preferred StreamScan for different reasons: First, their solution was automated with Artificial Intelligence tools, their offices were located in Quebec, the service was offered in French and the cost was attractive.

StreamScan installed in a few days and configured on our network a virtual machine which began to continuously listen to the communications between the various devices to identify any potential security risk. As soon as a threat reached a certain level, a StreamScan analyst contacted the internal IT team to complete the response and end the threat.
How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
We have been in regular contact with a cybersecurity analyst responsible for our account. Communication is also easy and open with the VP of Business Development and the President of StreamScan.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
Even though we can never be 100% certain that a new cyber attack could happen again, we are now able to quickly detect a threat and limit its impact on the organization. This solution is here to stay and together with StreamScan's regular advice and recommendations we are better protected against these threats.
How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?
Access and communication is really easy, honest and transparent with the StreamScan team.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
With StreamScan, we don't feel like we're just customers. We are partners. StreamScan is constantly improving and is attentive to our needs. I particularly appreciate the monthly executive report they send me and which I can communicate to management committees to raise awareness of these risks that threaten so many companies.

I was the IT director at Renaud-Bray, the biggest Francophone bookstore in North America.

What challenge were you trying to address with StreamScan?
We needed help with the cybersecurity of our organization. We wanted to make sure that our IT systems were as safe as possible.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
StreamScan provides managed detection and response (MDR) in our system. They've also installed a compromise detection system (CDS) on our network. They monitor data coming in and out, and in case of a breach, we will be immediately notified and an automatic response will be applied to our equipment.
Additionally, StreamScan is conducting penetration testing on our internal and external environments. They usually do that during off-hours to minimize the impact on the environment and production. Whenever they find a vulnerability, they will call and notify us. They tell us what we need to do on the technical side to resolve the issue.
Similarly, their monitoring services can detect if there's an IP or a range of IPs from another country that's scanning us. They will confirm if we want that blocked with their automation tool. They followed my request to call me even in the middle of the night to let me know if there was an issue — that's the kind of service they offer.
StreamScan visited our on-site server, installed a device, and after that, the monitoring was done remotely. For penetration testing, some testers come on-site for a couple of days, but others are testing remotely.
When they've plugged the equipment, they did some patching but didn't need to redesign the infrastructure physically. They can control the device on a VMware environment and Hyper-V infrastructure.
There's someone from StreamScan who monitors our system daily. They check our system's status and if there are any issues found. They call us on the spot if there's something critical.
StreamScan also prepares reports and presents them to our executive committee. Additionally, they prepare detailed and technical reports for our technical management and operation team.

I work with Karim (Founder & President), Frederik (Chief Growth Officer), and 4–5 other people.
How did you come to work with StreamScan?
StreamScan was recommended to us by one of our suppliers. We chose to work with them since they were constantly available, and their proposition was very personalized. I also researched their company online, and their CDS services were interesting.
StreamScan was the only company that presented customizable services for our needs. Other companies offered the same products, albeit with different flavors. StreamScan was different — on top of what everyone else was offering, they had extra services such as CDS. With that, we decided to work with them.

We’ve spent a bit less than $100,000 CAD (approximately $81,000 USD).

We started working together in November 2018. Even though I've already left Renaud-Bray, I know their partnership with StreamScan is ongoing.

The tool StreamScan is using is transparent and doesn't require downtime to modify the network architecture. When other agencies run penetration tests, their equipment sometimes causes the system to crash and reboot.
How did StreamScan perform from a project management standpoint?
The fact that StreamScan's president visits on-site to present himself and talk to us shows their professionalism. Their staff are well trained — for example, their penetration testers are university professors, which assures us of their expertise.
StreamScan also explains why specific tasks cost a certain amount. They have different kinds of packages depending on how much you want to pay.
What did you find most impressive about them?
StreamScan offers CDS, which is a unique piece of hardware. They can do specific tests depending on your needs, and their services are very personalized and customizable. Their price is very competitive, too.

I can't think of anything. StreamScan successfully fulfills their promises.
