We hired Segue Interactive to design and develop an MVP for a Savings and Credit Co-Operative Society (SACCO) / Group Savings mobile app aimed to serve the population with low internet penetration and low financial provision.

We had already worked on an Agritech Mobile App in late 2019. So we already had some experience working with them.

We had a series of discovery meetings within a week, then created a wireframe prototype then moved on to development.

Key Deliverable: They delivered the first sprint in two weeks and were we able to demonstrate an MVP to the stakeholders and got feedback to improve on it.

Technologies: We used android studio, Java, MVVM, Persistent storage, and Push Notifications.

We work with 2 people from the Segue Interactive Team, an android developer and UI/UX Designer.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Right now we have 5 SACCOs each with 100-1000 SACCOs and 50 other traditional saving groups. And it's been approximately 1.5 years since we acquired our first customers. It’s been a long since we had any technical problem, and when we did, their team was always willing to spend a week to anchor the product to the right trajectory.

Most of the communication was done over slack and WhatsApp. We met on a zoom call once a week for progress check in.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They were more than willing to iterate the UI a couple of times to get it to work well with end users.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

There weren’t any standout weaknesses, however, there can always be room for improvement in each engagement and when we developed the app in 2020-2021 they did not have a dedicated project manager on the team. I would recommend they have one on their next project.

I’ve initially discussed my project goals with the Segue Interactive team, and they’ve asked industry-related questions to understand the core of our product and the complexities of the child welfare system. Upon completing this stage, they’ve launched the development process, ensuring that the platform is iOS- and Android-friendly. We’ve recently launched the platform, and upon its go-live, we’ve identified areas for improvement. They’re currently working on accomplishing the updates, and we’ve scheduled the app’s relaunch soon.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Segue Interactive was able to deliver an MVP in 3 months as they had promised. Though we haven’t gone fully in the market yet, so there are no quantifiable metrics to share at this point. From our perspective, Segue Interactive has cooperated well with our team to address technical issues and implement changes to improve the efficacy of our platform. Upon our launch, we plan to gauge their team’s performance through the user feedback and the number of downloads we’ll secure.

We mainly communicate via email, phone calls, and Zoom meetings. Segue Interactive has phenomenal project management skills — they’re always willing to accommodate our queries and concerns.

I find the entire culture of their organization impressive. They’re product-oriented people; they don’t just develop software, they think about what they’re building while trying to understand our business. They’re partners that truly want to make sure our product was successful.

There are always little things to improve on, but overall, I’m very satisfied.

Within one month of launch, we had onboarded 1000 teachers across Kenya. Most of them loved using The Riara TPD app and we rated 5 stars on google

The project manager was easy to get to even on a weekend. We communicated mostly through Slack, Zoom, and Whatsapp sometimes. Meetings were uniformly done every week to check the progress unless there were other issues to discuss in between.

Their knowledge about UX/UI was appealing and we were satisfied by their active communication throughout the project.

Defining the agenda of every meeting could be of much help in swift delivery of a project of this kind.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

On the first day, we received over 50 downloads where users were mostly happy about the app. We mostly got over 4.0 reviews and some good feedback which Segue Interactive is still working on around the clock. In our recent update, users are generally positive about our e-commerce platform.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The project manager used to communicate to us with progress details at least thrice a week by phone or email. The communication was increased to daily when we were nearly launching. I was generally impressed by the team's timelines though the deadline was passed by 2 weeks.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their good communication, responsiveness, and delivery speed are appealing. We loved our collaboration on the project, especially with the product design guy. He recommended the best tips to make the app work better in Somalia.

Are there any areas for improvement?

They did everything okay but there is some need to improve the app to work well in the Somali context in terms of looking at the data faster.

We worked with 3 people from the Segue Interactive Team, including Mungai (Co-Founder). He handled the UI/UX design and Quality Assurance tasks and offered inside knowledge of the android development space.

deliverables? We had been rejected by Y-Combinator 2 times in the past 2 months but after the new design launch we passed the YC interview and became part of YC 2022 with $500k pre-seed funding. After a few months of growth Mungai is still available to jump on a call and recommend measuring and scaling strategies.

We communicated over email, whatsapp and iMessages. We also jumped on a google meet and even met on physical discussion.

Their UX design approach and delivery speed were impressive.

We found Segue Interactive through a referral and vetted them amongst 3 other providers. This was a high-stake project and we were running out of time we asked them to come up with an MVP solution within a month.

We started with a discovery workshop to go over the business challenges then came up with solutions. Segue Interactive presented UI/UX Designs for the desired platform after a week and development started. The Rider Mobile app was done in Java(Native Android) and The Dispatch system in Laravel PHP. Segue Interactive was available to come to our office. They have delivered the project within a month and a half, which gave us time to measure the outcomes and adjust.

There were 5 people in the team; a project manager, a mobile developer, a backend developer and a QA Analyst.

We were able to launch the logistics platform within 2 months. We have seen an 85%(35 mins) decrease in Turn Around Time per order, 60% Increase in daily completed orders and the logistics department has become more transparent.

We were pleased by their project management style. We were communicating through slack, emails and WhatsApp sometimes. Backlogs were being logged on Jira. We also used Notion for notes.

We had direct access to the whole team and sometimes they agreed to come to our office 2 days a week to fine-tune some details with our internal team. This made it easier to communicate and find solutions together.

They are quite great. Over a year later we are still working together on system upgrades.
