The team was clearly knowledgeable and professional. Between all on their team, they cover a large range of skillsets that I would need to bring my product to market.

While there was a very basic app built, the team effectively built the current app from scratch. This involved complex features such as an auction, use of Google Places API, integration with payment services, Plaid, Stripe and Dwolla. They built a NodeJS backend with both ReactJS and NextJS on the front-end to serve the purposes of different aspects of the website. They also assigned another developer to a Ruby on Rails app I am building separately from this one.

We haven't officially launched so, don't have any traffic stats, but I can say that we're way closer to having all the pieces of this complicated, regulated business coming together to produce an app that can be used as intended. We generated tens of thousands of SEO related pages

We use Trello and Whatsapp to communicate. They update me on Trello about task updates, and we chat or have a call when a longer conversation is needed to get into more detail.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The range of services offered was very impressive. Whenever I think I'll likely need to get an outside contractor to handle some technical need, most of the time, they are able to source someone internally or externally, which makes coordination so much easier.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

When I leave some things ambiguous, like what an error message should be, they could check with me to clarify. As English is not their first language, occasionally typos show up on the app. But this is such a minor, easily-fixed issue and it's the only thing I can think of.

What was the scope of their involvement?

ScaleupAlly offered us the chance to engage with very competent engineers to gap-fill some of our internal roles that we couldn't fulfill ourselves. In Australia, development talent is quite expensive, and they offer a cost-effective alternative. We started the engagement by solving a few little issues we had, after which they transitioned into being the primary and sole provider of our technical talent. The first project they worked on was the development of a Stripe integration. They started doing a little bit of the frontend work and, over a period of time, picked up the backend work as well.

We’ve since scaled up our engagement with them and went on to hire a few more developers. They’ve also taken over the bulk of our software development push to build out our online platform. Over the last couple of months, they've been handling most of the development load for the entire platform, which is a big undertaking. What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I keep a critical eye on the development cycle in terms of its deliverables, and I’m very active in Jira to make sure that the work that’s assigned to them is completed and that the features we request are put up on the platform. I can see things being completed and the speed at which ScaleupAlly delivers, and I’m very impressed. They deliver things very quickly, which allows us to roll out features for our customers in relatively short timeframes.

How did ScaleupAlly perform from a project management standpoint?

ScaleupAlly has performed well in terms of project management. They organize their work in sprints, and they exceed our expectations in terms of staying within budget and speed of delivery. For example, one of our customers suggested a feature, which I then mentioned to ScaleupAlly. I mapped out a basic UI for it. ScaleupAlly then turned that UI into structured elements inside the platform, built all the code around it, and deployed it — all within two weeks, which is an incredibly quick turnaround for a functionality like that. This feature immediately added value to our product and is a clear demonstration of what ScaleupAlly is capable of.

We primarily communicate through Slack. We use Jira to manage our software work and tickets and Figma for UI/UX planning and communication.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’re impressed with ScaleupAlly’s ability to intuitively and creatively solve our problems. It’s a real privilege working with them because they are able to solve problems independently. They don’t require managerial overhead or oversight with the role that they’re performing. I appreciate that because as a founder, I have a million things to do, and having an autonomously managed development team is great because I could focus on other things in the business while they do all the technical work.

Are there any areas they could improve?

If I had to say one thing, it would be to be tighter on documenting how time is spent. It’s not really a serious concern, just a matter of documenting it.

Having a technical lead who could translate your business use case into technical product features and handle the development is really invaluable because it would help you focus on your business priorities, vision, and strategy. It’s also a good idea to set aside time to liaise with ScaleupAlly’s team and work alongside their project manager and product delivery team.

Switching to BI reports has definitely made the reporting a lot easier and has removed the need to update the report manually everything which is saving time in terms of manpower hours. Plus the added benefit of real time reporting is very helpful in making day to day business decisions.

It was very easy, we should slack for day to day communication and used zoom or teams call for detail catchup.

We needed a well-organized and well-managed company to provide us with technical and project management resources.

What was the scope of their involvement?

My platform is large-scale and has multiple moving pieces. When I hired ScaleupAlly, I needed somebody with expertise in implementing a payment process and a digital wallet module into our system. That would allow us to receive and send payments. ScaleupAlly understood what I needed as they had experience working with a similar product. They were able to implement a payment and wallet system through Stripe quickly.

Because ScaleupAlly had a project manager in their team, we regularly met and went over the scope of the job. They brought more of the deeper pieces to the project because I had very vague documentation. They did extensive research based on my requirements. With their questioning, expertise, and experience, they created a larger documentation based on my needs.

ScaleupAlly used the document to build a working flow of the modules and detail how the money would move throughout the website. At the same time, they did more research to figure out calculations and other similar things. It was quite extensive work on their part to come up with a solution for my requirements.

They have the technology, knowledge, and skillset prior to meeting with me. They brought me up to speed by bringing in standard payment processing for basic websites and e-commerce businesses. 

I asked ScaleupAlly to give me a standard design, leaving a lot of it open for me to work on. There were areas that they suggested and brought in very great design attributes to the website’s layout. They brought in some design features and mixed them with my requirements and expectations. As a result, they gave me a pretty nice-looking product from a design standpoint. 

Not only did they meet my project goals, but they exceeded my expectations. As such, I have kept them on for more work because I’m getting good results from their team.

I have one person assigned as a project manager, and I also have a dedicated developer. They have several other people on their team helping the developer whenever he has questions.

Had I not hired them, I would be looking at another three months with my current developers to get to where we are today. 

How did ScaleupAlly perform from a project management standpoint?

I couldn’t have asked for anything better. ScaleupAlly’s team is very attentive, and they communicate when they need to discuss or clarify their tasks. I had never worked with a better company; they are very willing to work and talk with me. If they have questions, they asked, and we talked over the phone. They’re great to work with. 

We use Google Sheets to document what will be done, the details of each piece, the timeframe to get it done, and whether it was tested or finished. Our process works out very well; it’s simple, but it’s exactly what I needed. Additionally, we use Skype to communicate with each other. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

There’s no question in my mind that ScaleupAlly means business. They sit around and talk about how they can do the best for the customer. They use one of those methodologies for project management and communication — they are a skilled company that knows how to communicate with customers. 

I knew in my mind what I needed to be done, but very often, I did not write that out. ScaleupAlly can pull that out of me and get the information. They are good at finding out what the customer needs and executing it within a timeline.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They are accustomed to getting my needs, even if sometimes those are not well-defined. Although they have given me some suggestions and ideas, I think there could have been more of them. They could have related their experiences with the other companies they’d worked with, just to make sure I’m not going down the wrong road. 

There were times that I waited for feedback to see if what I asked them to do was the best thing all along. They accomplished it, and that’s good and appreciated, but I think they could pass on a little more of their experience to guide me with some of my decisions. That said, I would do it all again the way we’re doing it now. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Ensure all the documentation is prepared and all the workflow is finished, before reaching out to any developer — that will speed up the process. You need to have a little bit more on paper because they’re going to do what you need them to do. If you don’t have any information, they’re going to be spending part of their time helping you develop your development plan. Regardless, ScaleupAlly can help you get through it.
