I’m the founder and CEO of a clean tech company operating in carbon accounting. Our product is an automated solution for product carbon footprints to measure the lifecycle carbon emissions of food and beverage products in particular.

We needed a software development partner.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?
Initially, Rootquotient performed a scope of our project requirements and our vision for this carbon-intelligence platform. From there, Rootquotient provided a business proposal illustrating their understanding of our platform and what we needed to accomplish. Then, we went through an intelligence-gathering stage where Rootquotient conducted an exercise to define the platform's user journey and collect the information they needed to build the platform. 

Rootquotient has produced low-fidelity designs for us to review and then delivered high-fidelity designs based on our feedback. Rootquotient has broken down the development stage into sprints, developing the platform by stages. The team has delivered an initial beta version of our platform, which has gone through extensive testing. We then launched and tested the platform through a pilot program we ran with Canadian food and beverage companies. Based on this pilot program, Rootquotient has identified bugs and retrieved user feedback to implement and enhance the platform before delivering the final version. 

Rootquotient continues to build features and functionalities on top of our platform and provides ongoing support and maintenance. The team has used Node.js for backend development, React.js for fronted development, and PostgreSQL to build databases. Our platform is hosted in AWS.

The team composition changed throughout the project, but I've worked with two project managers, a backend developer, a frontend developer, and a full stack developer.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Rootquotient in September 2022, and the team finalized the platform's first version in November 2023. The team continues to provide support and maintenance.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Rootquotient has delivered outstanding results, and we've received positive feedback from users about the platform. The platform is intuitive and easy to use, meeting our expectations. Initially, when we launched the platform's beta version, it had bugs and glitches that Rootquotient immediately addressed within 24–48 hours. We now have a stable platform with a user-friendly interface and good UX. 

Moreover, Rootquotient has deep and extensive software development and programming knowledge. The team provides guidance regarding what we should consider and how to enhance our software. The platform is consistent and calculates complex numbers based on data inputted by clients. We've done our own validation testing and built our own version of the software, and it's calibrated nicely.

Additionally, Rootquotient is knowledgeable in third-party API connection and provides good solutions to errors that this API throws. The team has seamlessly integrated third-party API into our platform, including a Google Maps API.

How did Rootquotient perform from a project management standpoint?

Rootquotient delivers work on time and in line with our budget. We have excellent communication through weekly Scrum meetings. We also use Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and email as required.  For project management, we use Google Workspace, SendGrid, and Twilio.

I want to highlight Lokesh's (Senior Software Developer) work.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I'm mostly impressed with Rootquotient's technical knowledge and experience with writing the code and third-party integrations. We talked to other service providers that didn't have the abilities Rootquotient has. Additionally, the team's problem-solving skills are impressive. Rootquotient has a systematic process to pinpoint issues and comes up with a resolution quickly. 
 
Are there any areas they could improve?

We'd like more input and insight regarding how we can leverage AI technology and use it to enhance the platform and accelerate development. However, I'm aware that we haven't pushed Rootquotient too much about this.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?
I recommend having a good vision and understanding of the project they're trying to build and the required key functionalities. This way, they can communicate these requirements to Rootquotient and expedite the process, ensuring everyone is on the same page.

We’ve hired them for development services on four separate projects. We didn’t feel we had the internal resources to complete these projects, so we brought in RootQuotient. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

RootQuotient is providing us with basic coding and product design work. We are currently in the process of completing our discovery phase. RootQuotient has evaluated requirements based on our user stories and backlog and has recommended a team to work with each based on the project's needs. RootQuotient has explained their understanding of the project to us and has outlined their assumptions, workflow, and diagrams. 

RootQuotient has also broken the project into different layers: presentation, application, domain, and data source. They’ve provided us with an outline for each project from discovery to deployment, and we plan on working with RootQuotient through that whole process. 

We’ve provided RootQuotient with our design documentation and system, operator manuals, and requirements documentation. We’ve asked RootQuotient to migrate information from Oracle to Microsoft SQL Server to create a consistent database across our platform. Other technologies include Node.js, React, Figma, and Supernova.

We work with a few developers, but we primarily engage with Aravindh (Lead Application Developer), who handles all of the appointment scheduling, research, and discovery calls. We also work with project, delivery, and account managers.

How did you come to work with RootQuotient?

We did a local search within our area; one of our prerequisites was that we work with a vendor in person. We looked at eight companies and decided to move forward with RootQuotient based on their presentation quality and pricing model.

We’ve invested between $500,000–$1 million CAD (approximately $380,000–$760,000 USD).

We started working together in March 2023, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We intend to continue using RootQuotient’s services far into the future. From a metrics perspective, we’re measuring them on their timeline; they’ve delivered everything early on three projects, and the fourth is on time. 

How did RootQuotient perform from a project management standpoint?

They keep open communication lines and are always upfront with issues or updates. It’s still early in the project, but we’ve been very happy with the project management so far. We use Azure DevOps as a project management tool and Confluence for documentation.

We’d like to highlight Ranjit (Delivery Lead); he has really stood out, but their whole team is great. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’ve been impressed with their enthusiasm for the project and how engaged their team is. It’s been a pleasure working with them. RootQuotient has taken the time to understand our products and domain, and they regurgitate everything back to us to ensure alignment. We are confident in their abilities because they consistently listen to feedback and check in with us. RootQuotient has made us understand our product better because of their helpful recommendations. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

Some of our calendars haven’t been synced because of a Microsoft Teams issue, and that’s caused a bit of frustration for us. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Make sure that your user stories and requirements are clear. We went through everything very quickly to meet timelines, and we’ve had to use a lot of time to refine user stories and things that could have been completed beforehand.

I’m a computational design specialist for sparkbirkd, a division within WZMH Architects, an architectural firm. Our division is more of an R&D lab within the larger organization. We work on software, hardware, innovation, and technology.

What challenge were you trying to address with RootQuotient?

We hired them to create an architectural app for us. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

RootQuotient provides us with custom software development from scratch. The team is building a browser-based web application for us. RootQuotient is creating the app from start to finish, including the design, development, and deployment at some levels. For the design, we had a vision and ideas for the colors we shared with RootQuotient, and they’ve taken it from there. The team uses Adobe XD for design. 

We had an initial orientation meeting with RootQuotient attended by all stakeholders. During that meeting, we discussed the app and our partnership. From there, there was a four-week discovery phase. 

After the discovery phase, RootQuotient started developing two modules. We’ve worked mostly on module one, which the team will finish in the next few days. Then, RootQuotient will be working on module two. Additionally, RootQuotient is still working on the design. The app will digitize brand standards and guidelines for our clients. 

What is the team composition?

We work with three points of contact from RootQuotient. Our account manager has been with us since early into the process; he was the one with whom we negotiated and discussed the project. We’ve also worked with a designer and developers, including Karthick (Delivery Lead). 

How did you come to work with RootQuotient?

Starting in March 2023, we looked at several companies. We found RootQuotient through a Google search and on Clutch. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent $25,000–$50,000 CAD (approximately $19,000–$38,000 USD).

We started working together in April 2023, and the engagement is ongoing.

RootQuotient has been good; we're really happy with the app's design so far. We don't have any metrics yet. Overall, I don't have any complaints about RootQuotient.

We meet with two RootQuotient teammates every week to discuss the app, and they're always on time for meetings. So far, the team also meets deadlines. We're approaching a deadline and expect RootQuotient to meet that. 

We use Microsoft Teams video calls for communication and an Azure DevOps board to keep track of progress. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

We appreciate that RootQuotient has an office in Toronto — it's helpful to have a physical point of contact. Moreover, they're affordable and good listeners; the team pays close attention to our requirements. They're also doing really interesting things outside the industry. Overall, working with RootQuotient has been great. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

There's nothing I'd have them improve.

Start with a very concrete idea of what your app should be so that you can communicate it better. If you don't have a concrete app, spend time discussing the project with RootQuotient; they've been helpful in guiding us.

One of the web apps is a database that stores data about various app troubles. They’ve helped us build a web app for this database that will help business users better visualize the data models. 

RootQuotient is in charge of the UI/UX design as well. They handle the architecture and build the UI/UX wireframes. Then, they develop according to those wireframes and give me an application. Some apps are data model visualization tools. There’s also another platform to handle external data.

One of the RootQuotient co-founders was from my university. I visited their office and was impressed with their demonstrations of the different types of work that they do.

RootQuotient has delivered successfully, and the stakeholders were quite impressed. We’ve continued with the next phase and then started another engagement. The feedback has been quite positive.

RootQuotient’s team is good; I can contact them at any time. They have a good delivery structure, and their delivery lead keeps me updated. We have a weekly call to discuss risks and timelines. We also communicate via email and Microsoft Teams. Additionally, we use Microsoft Excel.

What did you find most impressive about them?

RootQuotient takes ownership.

RootQuotient works with small to medium-sized organizations most of the time. I’ve seen some challenges when they try to work in a very large enterprise. However, I believe they’re actively working on improving this.

Don’t go with staff augmentation. Ask RootQuotient for managed services.

I'm a department head at an investment management company that provides teachers' pension services. We have 40,000 teachers; we deal with the disposition of their estate throughout their careers, and when they pass, we track their pensions.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with RootQuotient?

We don’t have a big information services department because sometimes we require many web developers, while sometimes we don’t need that many people. For example, many teachers apply for pensions during the summer, and since the users are very busy, we don’t change or enhance the system during this period. If we hired three programmers during that time, it would be hard to keep them busy. 

We had a project to upgrade 25% of our system, and we didn’t think we could do it on our own. Therefore, it made sense for us to outsource that work to a different company so that we could change the team size as needed.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

RootQuotient is our outsourced development partner; they help us with web design and development. They provide resources trained in the language we use and architecture experts to ensure components are correctly built. The team also provides work management around development, similar to project management. They assign tasks to their developers and give us tasks to complete. 

For the design aspect, we explain what we want, and they create mock-ups to show us how things will look before they build them. Once the design is approved, they go into development. Currently, the team is helping us with an upgrade project that involves 25% of our system, which is very large and includes around 1,000 functions. They’re upgrading our technology to keep us updated with security patches. 

When our members apply for their pension, they upload 10–30 documents, including bank information, validated ID, and more. The system involves many taxation rules we have to apply. Our previous system was very rudimentary, so we’ve asked RootQuotient to improve it, and they’re now enhancing it. They’ve created mock-ups for that project, and we’ve provided feedback. 

Additionally, they’re helping us with a security change to our application. They’ll continue to make enhancements to our app and provide maintenance.

We’ve worked with around seven teammates from RootQuotient, including a project manager, developers, and a designer. The team composition changes as needed; at some points, we’ve had 5–6 people working on the upgrade project, while at other times, only 1–2. We’ve also worked with their executive leadership.

We went through a selection process where we looked at 6–7 different companies and selected RootQuotient.

We’ve spent under $500,000 CAD (approximately $366,000 USD).

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We couldn’t have done the upgrade ourselves, and RootQuotient has been fantastic. My internal teammates have come to me to say they’re impressed with RootQuotient because they’re knowledgeable and answer questions honestly. They’re meeting the targets we set out at the start of the project. We appreciate that they show us mock-ups before building things because we can tweak the design and send it to business users for feedback. 

Although we initially hired them for the upgrade project, they’ve done such a good job that we’ve expanded their involvement. They’re now working on two more projects, and we’ll continue to work with them for the foreseeable future. We have a list of four service providers that are material to our success, and RootQuotient is one of them. We’re so comfortable with their service that we’ve defined them as critical to our success. 

How did RootQuotient perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re very good at delivering work on time and within the budget, exceeding expectations. The project manager quarterbacks the project and facilitates the process, and the developers and designers attend our meetings as needed. We use Azure DevOps for project management, which they recommended. 

We have daily meetings through Microsoft Teams to discuss issues, so any problem we have is only 24 hours old. They’re very open and provide feedback when a piece of hardware isn’t working. We ask questions and poke holes in their work, and they’ve very open to that too. Therefore, we have a great reciprocal relationship — there’s no wall between us. 

If I have a problem, question, or concern, I can raise it to their executive leadership, and they respond immediately. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

RootQuotient’s biggest strength is their ability to collaborate with us. I’ve worked with other outsourced providers where there was a big wall between us; we couldn’t ask questions or talk to certain people, making it hard for the relationship to work. With RootQuotient, we don’t have this issue at all. Going into the engagement, I expected more pushback and challenges; I never thought it could be this good. Overall, we’re very happy with what they charge us and happy to pay for their services.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The only area of opportunity is our time zone differences because they’re based in India. Still, they’ll work until midday on our time to accommodate us. Despite any challenges, I don’t have to work to find the benefits I’m getting from working with them.

Let RootQuotient help you! Don’t overly dictate how things need to be. Ask them what they need from you, and be open about your timelines. If you start with a partnership, everyone wins.

What challenge were you trying to address with RootQuotient?

We were processing loan applications on paper, and we approached RootQuotient to help us transition to a paperless method.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

RootQuotient has designed a financial solution to help us manage our loan portfolio and make our loan approval process paperless. They’ve built a loan origination system (LOS) and loan management system (LMS) for web and mobile use. The team has used React and Adobe XD to design and build the system from scratch and customize it to meet our unique industry requirements.

Our loan management process is tedious and involves pulling social security identification, reviewing customer details, and checking bank accounts. We also work with an external service provider who generates credit score reports based on the aforementioned information. 

The RootQuotient team has performed data integration and validation using an APL backend, which has enabled the system to streamline the data collection process for our users. The system also has a tool that calculates interest and keeps track of our day-to-day collections. In addition to creating a web-based platform, the team has also launched the system as a mobile app for iOS and Android.

We’ve worked with a project manager, Jagan (Product Designer), Anish (Ruby on Rails Developer), and front-and backend developers.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

RootQuotient has designed the nuts and bolts of the system to meet our specific industry needs. They’ve exceeded our expectations and delivered a product that has changed our work culture and allowed us to innovate. Roughly 95% of users access our mobile app on Android.

Shifting our process from paper to digital has significantly increased our efficiency levels. Furthermore, the new system has saved us money, effort, and time. We’ve reduced our processing time from seven days to three days, which is awesome.

Everything has gone pretty smoothly. I’ve worked with many service providers, and RootQuotient has been the most efficient when it comes to project management. They’ve been very communicative via Microsoft Teams and delivered 99% of their tasks on time.

I’ve been most impressed by RootQuotient’s efficiency and design skills, which are out of this world. Additionally, the team has shown us unwavering support outside regular working hours. What was the scope of their involvement?

We hired RootQuotient to complete our mobile and web development project for us; we’re currently in the QA phase of the project. Among other features, our product includes geolocation, a calendar, a chat system, a document management system, and a search engine.

RootQuotient is very good to work with. However, the product hasn’t been fully delivered yet, so I can’t comment on the success of the engagement.

RootQuotient’s communication is very good. Additionally, they’re great at meeting deadlines and staying on budget. Their team uses some tools for project management and bug tracking, but I don’t know which ones. We communicate via email and Microsoft Teams.

RootQuotient is very open to communicating with us and understanding our needs.

Are there any areas they could improve?

RootQuotient’s QA needs improvement. Now that we’re in the QA phase, we’ve found a lot of bugs. They’ve fixed some of those immediately, but others reappear a couple of releases later. Other than that, I haven’t had other issues working with RootQuotient so far.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have honest communication with them; communication is key. Additionally, it is important to have a technical team on your side to understand everything.

I’m the VP of engineering for an agriculture technology company in North Vancouver, Canada. We primarily service agriculture customers and growers in the global greenhouse industry. We have a SaaS platform for our customers, which is delivered through a web and mobile application.

We engaged them to increase our development speed or the amount of work we could deliver on our roadmap for enhances and features inside those applications.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We initially contacted RootQuotient and talked about different options. Then, the stack engineers were assigned to the project, and we started to work. We had an existing platform and API, and they came on board to extend it. They joined our team and worked with us using React Native on the mobile app and React.js and JavaScript on the web app.

We worked with an account manager and the two engineers assigned to the project. Additionally, we had a delivery manager in some meetings.

We were looking for a Canadian-based company with React Native mobile app development expertise. We searched on Google and found many different reviews on Clutch. Then, we filtered them down to RoomQuotient and contacted them.

We worked together from May–August 2022. It was a four-month contract.

They came on board quickly and were able to come up to speed and be part of the team. We had great engineers; they were responsive and worked embedded in our team. At the end of the month, we’ll achieve everything we wanted to accomplish.

How did RootQuotient perform from a project management standpoint?

We managed most of the project. Although they were in a different time zone, they worked remotely and were seamless and quick. Regarding time management, coordination, and communication, everything was excellent.

We added them to our Jira and communicated through Slack as a messenger tool. Also, we used Zoom and Google Meet.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their responsiveness and speed were outstanding. Moreover, we had experienced people on our project — they were notably fast and better than anyone we’d seen before.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Some of their people had to go on leave. We don’t hold them accountable for that, but we still had to work around it.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

We recommend them. They had clear communication and were very straightforward. We knew what was going on, and they were efficient and productive partners.

What challenge were you trying to address with RootQuotient?

We needed outsourced development services for our SaaS business.

What was the scope of their involvement?

RootQuotient provides us with ongoing development services for our platform; they help us develop new features, fix bugs, and build custom integrations. Our platform is developed on the JavaScript technology stack, so we mainly use MongoDB, React, and Node.js. Additionally, it is a cloud-based service powered by AWS. Although we haven’t officially required it, I know that RootQuotient also offers SEO, and we’re in the process of starting with those efforts.

What is the team composition?

I’ve worked with 4–5 people from RootQuotient, three of whom I work with on a daily basis — a project manager and two developers.

How did you come to work with RootQuotient?

I found RootQuotient through a Google search. I don’t remember on which site I found them, but it maybe was Clutch.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent around $30,000 so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in January 2022, and our development work is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

I’m very happy with RootQuotient’s work. What they build is used by other organizations, so we always get immediate feedback from those clients. So far, the feedback has been very positive. Whenever there is a bug or an issue, RootQuotient is always on top of fixing it.

How did RootQuotient perform from a project management standpoint?

I really like that RootQuotient assigs a project manager, so I work very closely with them. Additionally, I can talk directly with the two developers when needed. Of all the other development firms I’ve worked with, they’re definitely the best on the project management side.

Every month, we assign their team lists of tasks, and we talk every day about the progress of those tasks. We also meet every week to see if any of the features they’re developing are ready to be launched. We use Slack to communicate, Microsoft Teams for our meetings, and Google Docs to assign tasks.

What did you find most impressive about them?

RootQuotient is reasonably priced, offers very good communication, and delivers solid work.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, not really. I’m really happy with them; that’s why our relationship is ongoing. Of course, we’ve requested changes on some things that don’t work as expected, but they always fix issues, and we always launch bug-free features.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Providing them with predefined tasks is very helpful, even if the project is ongoing. Constantly giving them tasks and deadlines will help you prevent scope creep.
