Newzstand Corporation is a social media marketing platform. We offer software as a solution for social media marketing and our two products are NewzSocial and Engage.Social. I’m the founder and CEO. I’m a serial entrepreneur, and I’ve started several successful companies. This is my latest one.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Rishabh Software?

We hired them for a very specific set of products. We wanted a mobile version of our products and mobile access to our platform. We have engaged with them for multiple years, and they built two products for us on iOS. We wanted someone who would work with our team to build an iOS app, which runs both on iPhone and iPad, for two of our products.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Rishabh Software was pretty much independent. We also have a web version of the product, so a lot of the functionality was defined in the context of the web version. They rendered the details, including how to provide it to the user interface and how the iOS product would look. Then, we had a set of interfaces to our server-based service, which the iOS product needed to connect to. We let them choose the iOS technologies, using all the infrastructure and software and libraries available for iOS development. They really were responsible for architecting, designing, and implementing it. We provided the requirements and the interfacing through the server-based service.

Rishabh also helped with the marketing and strategy of the app in terms of push technologies and analytics technologies that could be integrated into it. They did manage the process of releasing the app, along with our team. We wrote the documents that were required to define the product for the App Store submission, but they actually did the submission to the App Store.

There are two apps. The first app was a social newsfeed product. We had a lot of content coming in from a variety of sources, and they had to provide a way to actually browse through the news by category, search through news, and share this news content on social media. This app was integrated with our backend server. The second component of the app was actually used with our corporate clients, where they actually had a social media marketing system and they could push content to users within their company. This app was supported both in English and Spanish, so they created a multiple-language version of the app from day one.

The second app was for a different kind of purpose. It was essentially what is called a social sharing app for any consumer to be able to go to sites that use that technology. It lets them keep track of all the content that was shared from that site. There’s a browser plug-in technology that they could use to share content from the browser. There was a pretty wide range of technologies Rishabh built as far as the products go.

How did you come to work with Rishabh Software?

One of our senior executives was based in Silicon Valley at that time and ran into them. At that time, we were looking for a partner for our iOS development. He said that he could put together a team that had some expertise. We started them with that project, and it worked out. They continue to keep supporting the products.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in August 2012, and the work is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

The app is pretty successful. It was designed as a stand-alone app. The value of the app is for our corporate clients. It is an integral component whenever any corporate client looks for the mobile version of our app. They download it straight from the App Store. The app has a few hundred thousand downloads independently. It has good reviews on the App Store.

How did Rishabh Software perform from a project management standpoint?

They perform well and they’re a very good team. They had a set of engineers and a project manager. There was a business relationship manager we could talk to if needed. The way we worked with them was on time and materials. We defined what we needed on a weekly basis and they were pretty much an extension of our development team. Sometimes, there were delays because of us, but they pretty much stayed within the budget and timeline. We communicated with them through Skype and email. They would build a version of the product, and then we would use the standard Apple distribution tools for testing early versions of the product.

What did you find most impressive about Rishabh Software?

What’s unique about them is if you want an important component of the product and are interacting with multiple teams, they are very self-contained. They worked as an extended part of our team. They are very professionally managed. Over five years, there is going to be some transition of staff, but they managed the process very well. They’re very responsive.

Are there any areas Rishabh Software could improve?

I can’t think of anything.

After researching businesses in India, I expressed my interest through LinkedIn. My initial conversation with Rishabh was informative. They provided information about the software development process and the stages I would go through. They followed up with a phone call within one week and provided more information, which we used to develop a scoping document. The business analysis was very thorough and would work with my available hours.

What is the status of this engagement?

The initial project began in September 2010 and was delivered in January 2012. The user interface project started in October 2016 and was completed in April 2017. Rishabh will continue to provide support to Safety for Life.

The client feedback on the design has been exceptional. The application works smoothly, with improved usability and navigation. It no longer looks cluttered and messy.

How did they perform from a project management perspective?

There were issues with time management and resources for delivery. At times, I was concerned about the level of communication from the project manager to team members. One team member left after the initial discussions and information was not passed on. That resulted in design concept issues and agreed upon actions not being included in the project. The delivery date was supposed to be 26 January 2017, but the project was more than two months overdue.

What did you find most impressive about Rishabh Software?

They are the only software development company I have dealt with, so I cannot make comparisons.

Are there any areas Rishabh Software could improve?

Rishabh needs to improve in terms of project management and communication. From a quality perspective, when a team member is leaving, such information should be communicated to the client. The records of discussion should also be maintained based on previous development meetings.

Rishabh Software built a web application from end to end. They did the design and architecture, including application security and database architecture. They did the core development and the UI/UX [user interface/user experience] component of the frontend. The web app is subscription based. It was developed to provide a CRM [customer relationship management] platform to mid-size markets. We followed an Agile methodology.

How did you come to work with Rishabh Software?

They were recommended by one of our trusted advisors as one of the best development firms in that region of India. We had a couple of meetings and I flew down to India to look at their team, their infrastructure, and what they had to offer. We made a decision based on that.

We spent between $1 million and $2 million over the course of our relationship.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in October 2014 and the project was completed in June or July 2016. We are looking to develop a few other products for ourselves and they’ll be the first firm we contact.

One of the best parts of working with Rishabh Software was not just their programming capabilities but the transparency in what they provided. As a development company, you can’t guarantee the business outcome of the product you’re developing because there needs to be marketing and a lot of other factors to make sure the product is successful. I rate Rishabh differently because of the way they managed their transparency with me. They were very professional and gave us constant updates about the project.

How did Rishabh Software perform from a project management standpoint?

We had a dedicated business analyst, project manager, and development team. We communicated through JIRA for bug fixing and another tool they used. They delivered the product on time.

What did you find most impressive about Rishabh Software?

The main thing for me was their transparency and honesty. Dealing with a foreign organization, though I’m Indian and I was dealing with an Indian company, is not that easy. I’ve been burnt before, so I appreciated their transparency and flexibility. They consider me as their partner. If there were any issues, they made sure to tell me.

We wanted to serve customers that struggle to access financial services and give them access to payments and the ability to move to other banking products. We started looking at outsourcing our IT requirements.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Having built products previously, I like to stick with Microsoft technologies because I find it easier and it’s the best technology to build with. I like using the most up-to-date coding bases, so C# and .NET were important to me. Because we’re an application that’s available on iOS, Android, and Windows phones, experience in Xamarin was also important. We used Microsoft Dynamics as our CRM [customer relationship management] solution, so the firm we used had to have experience in the majority of Microsoft products.

How did you come to work with Rishabh Software?

I interviewed 14 different technology companies from all over the world. We discovered a lot about what these companies were delivering to their customers. Rishabh delivered a huge pile of paperwork supporting the technology they could use and what they could do with it. Using our brief, they explained their recommendations on how they would go about the project. That enabled us to build the architecture together. Rishabh also had experience in the technologies I was interested in using.

We have spent over £100,000 [USD $122,915] on the project so far.

We started working with them in April 2015, and the project is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

People are impressed with the product and the architecture of how we’re delivering it. The investors are impressed that we have delivered a banking platform for 71 countries.

How did Rishabh Software perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re very accessible through Skype and have come to see us as well. We worked with a project manager, but I was also in contact with the owner and the developers. We use a platform called JIRA to communicate and manage the project.

What did you find most impressive about Rishabh Software?

Their detailed documentation sets them apart, which helps when a new developer starts on the project. Even though it’s a lot of paperwork, it helps us understand where we are and where we’re going.

Are there any areas Rishabh Software could improve?

Overall, they are a good company but sometimes they need to apply more common sense and initiative. Sometimes they go overboard on the amount of analysis they need and it can slow things down.
