I wanted to expand my business, and currently, I am in talks with some big companies to expand my app services. I want my app users to buy products even when they are in metro stations. The app will use augmented reality to show products and will deliver products to the next metro station or directly to the user’s home depending on user preference.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

I contacted more than 20 app development companies but they were not responsive, not confident, and had zero knowledge on augmented reality app development. I then contacted Riseup Labs, and they really gave me good information, support, and even more ideas to improve my app and complete the idea. The best reason to choose Riseup Labs is that they have experience with augmented reality apps.

The scope of my project was an e-commerce website and app for buying products, including shipping and delivery tracking. I also provide on-demand grocery delivery in our app.

When we started, we probably had between 4–6 people, and it was a mix of different types of front- and backend developers. We had a project manager, a tester, and so on.

I don’t think we could’ve done it on our own without them. They were definitely helpful.

Riseup Labs was hired due to their familiarity with augmented reality development. Riseup Labs has delivered the first of three phases of this ongoing e-commerce web and app project.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We started working with them in February 2020, right before COVID-19 and the lockdown. The development hasn’t really wrapped up, but the actual release of the app was 2–3 months later. We’ve actually kept them on, and they’re an extension of our team now. We continue to enhance the app as they do other work for us

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

The first couple of weeks were a little bumpy, but I don’t think we made it easy for them. I’d like to see some additional services or areas that they cover, but that wouldn’t be for this project, that’s for other needs that I have. Aside from that, I think they did a great job.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We put out an RFP, and I went through 15 to 20 proposals. Their philosophy on web development, concerning agile development and continuous delivery, appealed to me. They are also very good at involving the client in the process. Overall, their proposal was very impressive.

Second, when I sat down to meet with them, they knew what they were talking about. They were very confident that they could do what we needed them to do. They were incredibly personable and really listened to the issues that we were facing and what we needed the site to do.

It wasn’t just their business development person, but their developers that we were talking to. After that meeting, I was convinced, and even after meeting with four or five other potential vendors, everybody on my team unanimously agreed that Riseup Labs would be right for the job.

We don't have a lot of statistical data to share, as far as traffic improvement or lead conversion, but we are generally really pleased with the way that the site looks, the way the material is presented, and the SEO friendliness of the architecture.

They've been very responsive throughout the whole process. We talk as needed over phone and email.

Their responsiveness. A lot of times, I would send an email at night and by the next morning, things were fixed.

We found them through a recommendation. We had a couple of meetings, and we had a good fit straight away. They understood what we wanted to achieve and laid out the resources we needed. From there, we initiated the operation.

Riseup Labs has helped a real estate company launch their core product by serving as an outsourced tech partner. Services include front- and backend development, UI/UX design, DevOps, and product management.

We’re currently working with three developers: one frontend and two backend. They’re dedicated to us. There’s also a scrum master on their end. There are other resources that we can add along the way, including QA, design, and DevOps. They are very flexible from that perspective. The core team is always there, and then it’s fairly easy to onboard other resources as needed for certain amounts of time.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

They’re very integrated and forthcoming. We’ve basically been with the same resources since the start of the engagement, so even though they are outsourced, we really feel that they are a part of the team.

We try to give them the ability to feel ownership of the product and what they deliver to us, and they’ve taken to that. They want to deliver a good product with us.

Rather than just sending them specifications, they actually come with suggestions, so it’s a very dynamic and fruitful cooperation. It’s very valuable and cost-effective for us to have part of our development with Riseup Labs.

Our work together began in 2020, and it’s ongoing. They’ve been with us since day one. Our product has been live for 12 months, but we’ve worked with Riseup Labs for about 14 months.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Having worked with a few other providers, I feel like Riseup Labs has a bit of a different approach. It almost seems like they’re a startup in terms of their roles, like a customer success manager. They really try to deliver a quality product, and all of the resources we need are always available.

Overall, it’s a very well-oiled machine. They try to not only deliver something to us but also develop themselves, learn new technologies, and come up with new ideas. For them, it’s not just about delivering specifications, but also delivering a really good product for us.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

There’s nothing that’s worth mentioning or that affects the delivery for us. You can always get better at different things, but at the end of the day, we’re very happy with Riseup Lab’s final delivery.

Riseup Labs assisted in the redesign and redevelopment of a third-party client’s website. They incorporated several e-commerce features, including a tailored contact form.

The project manager was my contact person from start to finish. I talked with the owner initially over the phone and he sat in on the launch meeting. Beyond that, I worked with a web developer who still supports the site and two people on the backend.

The sales team are proud of it and use it as a selling tool. They also use it as a reference point for their clients. Before the redesign, they weren’t proud of the site, so they weren’t using it; it was a wasted expense.

They are down to earth and I always felt like their top priority. Someone was always in touch with me, usually within several hours, if not less than that. They were very vocal along the way, making sure that my expectations were being met from beginning to end.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Not only were they experts in their field, but the result of their work was beautiful as well. They know what they are doing, they’re very nice people, and they were so easy to work with. They’re very patient in giving me a good explanation and answer as to why things worked certain ways or couldn’t be done. I will use them again in future projects when working with other companies because they were so enjoyable to work with.

Never be afraid to ask a question. At first, I was feeling a little nervous about inundating them with questions, but they love to help and have a wealth of information. If you have a question, ask it, because they have an answer. If they don’t, they will figure it out.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We had people for the tech community, clients, and even people overseas talking about how solid the functionality was. Early in the process, we even had people commending our relationship because we didn’t have any technical problems. We were able to establish confidence in their tech skills very easily, so we could move on to do great things with the build.

They managed the entire project really tightly but not in a way that felt overly restrictive or unnecessarily process-driven. It was one of those scenarios where we knew where the project was on any given day. We understood where our sprints sat within the larger time frame. That level of professionalism was impressive. We knew what to expect going into every meeting, and it was clear that they had internal stand-ups prior to our meetings because they always seemed prepared. There was never any wasted time, and they took advantage of the Bulgarian work schedule well.

I’d also say that the communication was really fluid. It wasn’t limited to one point of contact, but rather, we could Slack anyone on the project team at large. It was clear that people could communicate with us as necessary, and there were regularly recurring structures around our budget and testing plans.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Their ability to respond quickly and intelligently without being reactionary was impressive. They remained cool-headed and confident, so there was never any hesitation about what was going to happen next. Typically, in these types of relationships, a challenge will shake the foundations of the development somewhere along the line. That never happened. When working with sensitive, global material with leaders in the industry, sometimes we had to move on certain tasks within hours. They were a decisive partner. I could call them at any time and have complex situations dealt with pretty quickly. That was one of the strongholds of our relationship.  

They brought ideas to the table that was well beyond what we were planning. That’s been recognized now by several groups. The components they added and suggested have allowed for a much grander audience for the site.

It took some time to ramp up. However, this was a complex project, so that may just be the nature of the beast. They contributed to conversations well and never oversold themselves.

We started working with Riseup Labs in November 2022, and our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We can quantify the number of IoT connections and payloads from the device. Initially, we started with a handful of eCooks, and now we have around 20,000 eCooks connected to our backend. We’re also seeing faster calculations to show customer usage.

How did Riseup Labs perform from a project management standpoint?

Riseup Labs’ project management process is good, and they deliver on time. We communicate via in-person meetings, virtual meetings, and email or messaging apps.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Riseup Labs is very adaptive to any change and takes feedback positively.

There’s a huge room for improvement in their cost and time estimation before the project.
