I'm the creative director at Ignition, a creative agency that predominantly works in the automotive sector. We do everything from car launches to internal skills-based training. Our services include event graphics, event apps, websites, stage design, animation videos, e-guides, and printed materials.

We needed help with mobile app development because we didn't have the capacity in-house.

What was the scope of their involvement?

RebelDot developed our mobile app for iOS and Android. We designed the app in-house, and RebelDot provided input and advice, especially on UI/UX design. The app contained information for automotive manufacturers and other sectors. Users could deep-dive into their products and see information like ratings, reviews, sales tips and tricks, and walk-rounds of the car. The app was a one-stop shop for dealers to get information about their product ranges and competitors. RebelDot ensured that all the material and items on the app were up to date.

Additionally, if there was a launch event or training, the app could plug in web-based material for that event. The app showed information about the event location and places to stay. We could push through quizzes, questions, and other engaging elements throughout the event. 

What is the team composition?

Our team consisted of 3–7 teammates from RebelDot, including Dana. The team composition varied depending on the aspect we were working on.

How did you come to work with RebelDot?

Our senior developer did extensive research and created spreadsheets. He went on Trustpilot and Clutch and drew up ratings for all the companies. RebelDot stood out, so we got in touch and met with the team before selecting them. We did a thorough comparison among different service providers.

How much have you invested with them?

The project as a whole was €90,000, and we invested €50,000 because we had an agreement with RebelDot.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from March–June 2024.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We were very pleased with the results. The app was very well-received during demos and sales demonstrations, and we were very happy with RebelDot's work.

How did RebelDot perform from a project management standpoint?

RebelDot’s project management was fantastic. We were taken aback by how efficient they were. We had regular meetings every week via Microsoft Teams, and Dana was on top of things. RebelDot's project management was eye-opening for us because we also work with several clients and manage projects. The team used a range of online tools for project management. We used Figma to review the designs and went through the UX aspect.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Dana was incredibly efficient. We had one or two calls weekly, and she was very thorough. She let us know exactly where we were with work and the budget. I highly recommend her to any potential customers for RebelDot. Dana was a force to be reckoned with. She was very accessible and transparent.

RebelDot was very thorough, efficient, and good at communication. The team was incredibly friendly, personable, and clear.

I can't think of anything they could improve on.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Listen to RebelDot because they’re very experienced and dependable. Trust the team and listen to what they have to say. RebelDot has fantastic ideas and is expanding their company into the realm of AI. I'd definitely see what they have to offer regarding AI solutions.

As our product and number of customers grew, we saw a need to strengthen our services, competency, and capacity on the developer side. We needed to find a new partner for these services.

What was the scope of their involvement?

RebelDot has taken over our code base. Initially, we collaborated with our current developer environment and RebelDot, but the latter quickly managed our entire complex code base. While maintaining the current code, they've started looking into how to build a new 2.0 version of our product. This includes reviewing the different technologies we use to find the best technology for each module, component, and feature of our application. 

They’re also helping us integrate AI services into our product. Currently, our product is based on web technology; it's a B2B application that is installed in our customer's environment. It will also be a mobile app in the future. For the frontend, we've transitioned from a native technology to using React. 

What is the team composition?

Initially, we worked with Marius, the sales representative and business developer. After some meetings with Marius and another teammate, we traveled to Romania to meet with the team and met most of the management team. Usually, we're in contact with more than five people from RebelDot’s team.

How did you come to work with RebelDot?

We met Marius at a sales training seminar in Oslo. Not too many weeks after that, we found out that we needed to improve our development capabilities. Marius came to mind, so we had a quick meeting with him to hear more about their services. We also checked RebelDot’s website, which seemed very professional. Based on that meeting, we started the dialogue.

We chose them because the whole team was very welcoming and extremely professional during our discussions. They also showed a sincere interest in learning everything about our product, even before we had signed the contract with RebelDot.

When we get releases with new code, it’s practically without any bugs or errors, which is a huge improvement. RebelDot is extremely capable of understanding the needs we have to resolve for our customers. They understand our business and our customers’ business. The team is also valuable when discussing the future development of our product. RebelDot is more than just a code developer; they’re now part of our product development team. 

How did RebelDot perform from a project management standpoint?

RebelDot is very good at reporting progress. We get frequent updates on the progress and tasks performed. They’re also good at planning sessions, where we sit together or use email and Microsoft Teams meetings to discuss the key priorities for the next sprint.

What did you find most impressive about them?

RebelDot's positive attitude is impressive. They appear very structured and organized, and communication with their delivery manager is excellent.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We’ve only been working with them for a few months, so we’re still in the honeymoon phase. For now, I don’t think there’s anything they need to improve on.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I encourage potential customers to have an open collaboration with RebelDot. We know from our customers that the most challenging ones are the ones who treat us as a regular supplier of services, where the customer is always right. I don’t think that would work well with RebelDot. They’re too competent and put too much pride into their work. I recommend collaborating with them instead of just telling them how to do their job.

The project management was impeccable. We were always in the loop with everything happening, and the level of transparency was top-notch. Overall, we had a small delay with the delivery date of the whole project, from the beginning of November as planned to mid-December. We gave them feedback and tried to learn from this experience to implement changes for our 2024 collaboration.

A noteworthy success metric for the project was timely delivery, which was a great achievement considering the project's complexity and ambiguity.

Analytical skills of the developers, when they had to research potential solutions, they always provide a comprehensive analysis, with pros and cons for each potential solution.

I’m a co-founder and CPTO at Neutrally, a health technology application that uses blood glucose data to better people’s health.

We’re a pre-product tech startup, and we hired RebelDot to help us translate our vision into a workable MVP.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

RebelDot is developing an MVP of our iOS mobile application using React, React Native, and Firebase. We started with a discovery phase focused on getting to the strategic answer of why we exist and what our product should deliver for the user and the business. Once we finished that requirement-gathering process, they worked on the UX design with two of my other co-founders and myself. 

From there, they moved into the app's development and delivery period, which is the phase we're in now. The app connects to continuous glucose monitors via Bluetooth and takes blood glucose data from the sensor. Then, it provides the user with actionable steps to combat peaks or troughs in blood glucose through recipes, advice, and learning through content.

RebelDot is doing a very good job. They're very professional in how they operate and work with me in English, even though it's not their native language. They all speak the language fluently and are easy to communicate with, so nothing is lost in translation. Moreover, they have a deep passion for the sector we're in and what we're trying to do, so they don't feel like a separate team; they feel like part of our company, which is great. 

We've had quite a bit of a journey deciding the right glucose monitor to use. Many commercial and logistical factors were involved, so it wasn't just a business decision. RebelDot has been very patient with that and has worked on as much of the application as possible without that situation becoming a block, efficiently using time and money. Now that we've decided, they're working quickly to get the data into the application, which they've successfully done. Since we haven't released the app yet, we have no market data. 

How did RebelDot perform from a project management standpoint?

I'm very impressed with their project management. We work based on a time and material agreement, and due to the changing economic situation, we've had to tighten the screws on our budget, so we're looking to save con costs and time as much as possible. RebelDot is working with us very flexibly on that, which we appreciate. 

In terms of tools, they asked me what I'd prefer to use; we're using Jira. We typically communicate through email, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. Our primary tool is Slack to ask real-time questions. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

RebelDot's adaptability is their biggest strength — they're very agile. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

Maybe they're too flexible; it's possible to say yes too many times and thus spin the wheels, causing clients to spend more time and money. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

It would be best if you did a lot of work before appointing RebelDot; you should set your objectives of what you want to get out of the relationship and provide a detailed brief about your mission, vision, and audience. Additionally, set a lot of strategic goals and UX design goals. I would recommend doing that work in advance if you can.

In our area, getting a well-functioning development team and keeping them is challenging. I had trouble finding my own team, so I chose to work with RebelDot to go over the entire development process of our platform, from UI/UX design to production.

We had many sessions with the UX designer and some developers to create the design basics, working together with graphic designers. From that process, we came up with the first design of the platform. 

Then, RebelDot built a dedicated development team of three people. They’ve built the entire platform and are still working on it currently. Additionally, they’ve assessed the cloud server environment. 

What is the team composition?

We work with 3 dedicated developers and an UX/UI designer - the team is managed by a delivery manager. We have hired also an IT Architect to assess our Cloud environment and improvements are being implemented by one of the developers.

How did you come to work with RebelDot?

Our company is part of a venture capital firm, and RebelDot is one of the development partners of that firm. We had to pick between three options, and we chose RebelDot because we felt they were very dedicated. They’re an independent and established company that’s also ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certified, which was really important for us because we needed that certification.

How much have you invested with them?

On average, we pay them €20,000 (approximately $21,000 USD) a month. We’ve spent around €360,000 (approximately $379,000 USD) with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in December 2020, and the engagement is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We measure success based on a couple of aspects; one metric is how fast they can develop. When we started, I needed the platform live as soon as possible, and RebelDot worked with me to deliver an MVP in the best way possible. Another aspect we look at is the code quality, so I requested an external code review, and the reviewer was very impressed with RebelDot’s quality. 

We also look at customer feedback about the design and how our users are experiencing the platform’s usability. When I show demos to potential customers, they always say the platform looks clean and beautiful. Overall, the whole UX is good. The number of bugs is also very minor. 

Last year, our CTO and I tried to set up our own development team again. However, it was still difficult to find good resources, especially with our scaling challenges. Ultimately, we realized we wanted to find developers like RebelDot’s, so I decided to keep our current setup as a permanent solution. They make a proper selection to ensure new resources fit the existing team and who feel like our own teammates. Working with RebelDot is like having our development team without worrying about recruitment, knowledge, and expertise, which is unique. The team can deliver and add temporary resources if needed. 

How did RebelDot perform from a project management standpoint?

Our company works 100% online, and our team is spread all over Europe, so there isn’t much difference between our team and RebelDot’s. I can call the delivery manager anytime, and our product owner is in daily contact with our internal team. We don’t feel like they’re external; they feel like our own team. 

We have Slack for daily communication, Microsoft Teams for video calls, and we also use email. Occasionally, we visit them, or they come to our office. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m impressed by RebelDot’s code quality, and I’m very proud of the code review results. If I ever decide to take my IP and work with another company, the platform is of such quality that anybody can work with it — it’s well-documented and neatly encoded. 

In addition, the team is very critical of their own work. When they assessed our cloud environment, they came up with many improvements we can implement on our platform. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything they need to improve. They could move their office to the Netherlands — that would be awesome! 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

You can hire a developer and assign them to your team, but you won’t get the commitment a team would provide. If you’re a company in Western Europe with a project, define the scope so that an entire team from RebelDot can work on it. They have people from different disciplines, like back- and frontend development, DevOps, and UI/UX design; the more they can do with a holistic approach, the better quality and value for money you’ll get.
