BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I’m the family service and training coordinator for TASN Autism & Tertiary Behavior Supports, a project funded by the Kansas State Department of Education. We provide technical assistance and professional development to schools, seeking to better the outcomes for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and challenging behaviors.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire PocketCake?

We approached PocketCake to design and implement a mobile app for families, providers, and consumers in the Nebraska/Kansas area. The app would provide local resources for individuals with ASD.

What were your goals for this project?

We wanted to make ASD resources more accessible to the public and easy to find.

How did you select this vendor?

We searched for local app developers within the Kansas City region who were open to our project. Of the candidates, PocketCake was very responsive, and they were interested from the beginning.

Describe the project in detail.

Initially, we conducted in-person meetings and calls to discuss our goals and objectives. After we submitted a wireframe, their team produced three designs, collaborating with us to work out the details. They then built the app for iOS and Android.

The app allowed users to enter a zip code and search for local resources within a defined radius. The team organized the information into categories to facilitate navigation. Additionally, they compiled resources from other websites to create a data sheet that we could easily upload into the app. They also developed a backend website linked to the app where we could continually update it with new resources.

What was the team composition?

We primarily worked with our main point of contact, who, in turn, coordinated with other team members on the design and implementation. Their team consisted of 2-4 people.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Within a single month alone, the download total far exceeded our expectations. Though we currently don’t have any specific goals in mind, we’re working to gain new resources and downloads through our marketing efforts.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

PocketCake did an excellent job communicating and managing the expectations. The time lines were at their discretion, and we did not push for end dates, which allowed them to complete the implementation without any pressure. While the project took a bit longer than expected, the outcome far exceeded our expectations.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

We were surprised at Pocketcake's excitement for the app. They did a lot of research on ASD, listened to our experiences and ideas, and implemented the app, making sure to think through every little detail. They approached the app as both developers and users, which demonstrated a high level of empathy. This made our jobs easier because they understood our wants and needs.

Are there any areas for improvement?

While the natural progression of the project developed an efficient, flawless app, it would have been helpful to have a more concrete time line with an established end date.

[Our company] specializes in remanufactured transmissions for construction, logging, material handling, and mining equipment. For the past 40 years, our team of technicians, salesmen, and machinists has served the heavy equipment industry with professionalism and pride. I'm the founder and president.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

Instead of giving our customers promotional materials, we thought an application would be much more valuable. Not only would it be a great vehicle for communication, such as easy access to our contact information and push notifications, but it would include tools customers use every day, such as a calculator, flashlight, level, and drill bit chart. Our primary concern was cost.

SOLUTION

PocketCake was able to develop a custom mobile application for us, meaning it has [our company's] name and branding information, with all the desired functionalities for a very reasonable cost.

Our customers love our app and find that they use the tools frequently. It's been our most popular gift to our customers.
