A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m a photographer at Jonathan Barkat Photography.
What challenge were you trying to address with Parallel Productions?
I needed a producer to work on advertising productions.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Parallel Productions works with me to put together how we approach a production, including the people we need on the crew and the length of the project that the client is looking for. We also determine what the costs are and figure out the locations. We consider what problems might emerge, whether those have to do with permits, time, costs, resources, talent, and props. Parallel Productions follows all of the legal aspects that are necessary in terms of what we have on set and the hours people work. They also make sure insurance is covered.
We listen to the client’s feedback on whether the first estimate is too high, and then we accommodate accordingly. This is a matter of looking at the whole production and client brief from the ad agency, and then seeing how to best work together to make the project happen with the budget that they have.
What is the team composition?
Most of the pre-production work is with Will (Owner). We do some brainstorming and troubleshooting. Then, once we get closer to production, I speak with others, such as a photo assistant. I discuss with them what lighting equipment I want to have or how I want to do the lighting for that particular job. They also change the lenses.
In addition to working with Will on set, I work with one of his assistants from Parallel Productions. I also work with any freelancers he brings on for the project, ranging from the set and clothing stylists to hair and makeup people. Digital technicians help with the computer needs and camera tethering.
How did you come to work with Parallel Productions?
I met Will at an industry event, and we started talking. From that initial meeting, I was interested in seeing what else he had to talk about. I decided to get in touch when my next project came up, and I've been working with him since then.
How much have you invested with them?
On average, I have spent around $10,000–$15,000 per project.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working together in September 2016. The partnership is ongoing. Whenever I get an advertising project, I contact Will.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We measure the success of a project by whether it goes off without a hitch and if the client is happy, and that has happened every time. Another measure of success is how easy Will is to work with. That has also been great — we work well together.
A final measure is how well we handle any issues that arise on set with the end client. We need to quietly take care of situations without losing calm or alarming the client. On that level, he’s been great.
How did Parallel Productions perform from a project management standpoint?
We communicate by email and phone calls. The communication has been excellent. We have late-night talks if we are on a project, and we even do location scouting together.
What did you find most impressive about them?
The most impressive aspect is Will’s professionalism and knowledge of the industry. He knows the clients and what’s expected of us. He is also thorough, hard-working, and extremely detail-oriented. He’s what you want in a producer.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Honestly, there aren’t any areas Parallel Productions could improve. They’ve been able to handle a variety of situations.
Any advice for potential customers?
I recommend having a conversation with Parallel Productions; reach out to them and talk about the project. I’m sure Will will be able to see what your needs and those of your client are, and he’d be happy to work with you.
Parallel Productions has become a go-to production partner based on their knowledge of the industry and ability to please end clients. Professional and detail-oriented, the team facilitates a seamless process. Their communication is also noteworthy.
