The primary outcome was a detailed report on approaches to fix our SEO problem. Actual outcome from Google rankings can take months to recover, so we don't have that yet.

I’m an executive at an architecture and home planning company. Our primary business is a website that markets pre-drawn house plan blueprints; we have over 20,000 house plans to choose from. Users can enter their search criteria, such as the number of rooms or styles, and they get results that they can add to their cart and purchase. 

Our site has around 100,000 images, and because they’re house plans, there are many technical details. Therefore, our site has probably 1 million or more attributes associated with the house plans, which is an extensive database. However, if users know what they’re looking for, they can find it quickly. Our average purchase price is north of $1,000, and we have a long purchase cycle. Customers who spend $1,000 on a house plan will ultimately spend around $100,000 building a house.

What challenge were you trying to address with Onely?

Our site has been around since 2001, and it’s built on a .NET framework using JavaScript. The challenges we were running into were SEO, ranking, and performance in organic traffic. Over the past decade, we’ve worked with multiple SEO agencies with mixed success and, more often, with disappointment. 

Internally, we found that most SEO agencies were great with recommendations but lacked implementation expertise, which then fell on our developers, who aren’t SEO experts. We were looking for an agency that understood SEO and how to implement it from a coding perspective. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Onely provides us with SEO services. They started by doing a deep-dive technical audit of our website. From there, they provided us with specific action points, and their recommendations came with a step-by-step guide on implementing them. We shared these action points with our developers. 

After that, Onely spent an extended period working on onsite SEO. They reviewed our URL structure and internal linking. The team found that we were doing a number of things that were inefficient and resulted in a loss of quite a bit of our crawl budget. For example, we had multiple pages ranking for the same word, so Onely identified duplicate content to remove from the site. 

JavaScript is a big component of our code in making our database of images and attributes searchable. The team helped us clean up a lot of the inefficient JavaScript code in order to deliver better results and avoid confusing Google and Bing. More recently, they’ve helped us improve our category and landing pages to improve our organic traffic. 

Currently, Onely continuously helps us optimize our site. They’re helping us with offsite SEO in terms of link risk management; they’ve found many spam links and now help manage and clean them up.

We regularly work with Bartłomiej (SEO Manager) and Dominika (Senior SEO Specialist). Apart from them, Łukasz (SEO Manager) helps us with link risk management. 

How did you come to work with Onely?

I came across Onely through my Twitter account because I follow several SEO agencies, specialists, and thought leaders in the space. When looking specifically for technical SEO specialists, I noticed that other thought leaders shared what Bartosz (CEO) was posting. Since everyone was looking at him, I figured he must have something others didn’t, so I reached out to him directly. 

Bartosz responded almost immediately, bringing on Bartłomiej, Dominika, and a couple of other team members into our chat. We walked them through our challenges, and they were immediately unlike any team I’d met. They asked pointed questions about our site, technical SEO, and our challenges. During that first conversation, they looked into our code and identified issues — no one had ever done that before.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’re a seasonal business because most homebuilding occurs in the spring. When we hit our first peak season after hiring Onely, our revenue year-over-year (YoY) increased by 40%. Although our organic traffic has only increased by 10%, the quality of our traffic has improved based on the team’s work. In the past, we had gotten a lot of traffic that wasn’t converting, which wasn’t necessarily the traffic we wanted. The team has focused on making changes that help us rank for relevant keywords in terms of conversion into a sale.

My first internet investment was in 1996, so I’ve been working with SEO companies for over 20 years. Onely is the first provider I’ve come across that truly understands technical SEO. They can not only give recommendations but also know exactly how to implement them in terms of redoing JavaScript code and third-party APIs. For me, that’s unprecedented.

The technical audit involved a lot of work that Onely identified in detail. Their step-by-step recommendations made sense to our developers, and it has helped them gain knowledge to ensure that they follow the same coding guidelines going forward. Moreover, Lucasz has done one of the deepest dives I’ve ever seen in terms of evaluating and reviewing links. 

I also appreciate that they’re a flat organization. Other agencies bring in their knowledgeable teammates for the pitch, and once we sign up, we never see them again – that’s not Onely. Everyone on their team is accessible, and I can ask questions to anyone and get a response in hours or within 24 hours. 

How did Onely perform from a project management standpoint?

Regarding project management, we use Trello for communication, which has been very efficient. They answer our questions within one business day and provide specific and actionable recommendations. Their ability to communicate through Trello is terrific, and their instructions are always clear. We have Google Meet calls if we need to discuss something in greater detail, though this hasn’t been necessary for the most part. We use email separately if there’s something we need immediately or for bigger-picture ideas. 

In the past, I’ve spent a lot of time on the phone with agencies trying to understand what we’re supposed to do. That’s not the case with Onely; they’re very clear, so the engagement is much more efficient. We’re doing a lot in terms of implementation and don’t waste time or energy thanks to their focus, diligence, accuracy, and to-the-point approach. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Onely’s biggest strength is their understanding of SEO and the technical aspects of implementing that knowledge, which is a rare skill to find. Additionally, they’re wonderful people to work with; they feel like an extension of our team and not a distant third party, even though they work remotely. The team is smart and sharp and gets the job done efficiently. Most agencies we’ve worked with play checkers, while the team at Onely plays chess. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

The one improvement we’ve brought up with them is evaluating keyword ranking performance results relevant to us. They could identify key metrics that show where we were a year ago versus where we are now and our goals a year from now. Part of why they haven’t delivered this report is because we’ve just started, and there’s been much to do. However, we’re now in a position to look at longer-term goals and track results on that front.

My advice is to put your trust in their recommendations. Many people who have worked with SEO agencies in the past have been disappointed, so they feel like it’s a waste of time and do the work in-house. With Onely, you can put your faith in them because they’re unlike everyone else you’ve ever worked with.

Our top priority was to generate converting traffic. We hired Onely for on-site and technical SEO optimization of our website. Also, we needed off-site SEO in the form of link risk management.

We chose Onely through a tender to which we invited 5 leading SEO companies in Poland. The selection method was comprehensive. It took into account factors such as activity on industry forums and portals, public speaking, reviews of their current clients, and portfolio (presentation of interesting case studies).

Besides, we asked for opinions in the SEO industry and collected recommendations. The offer presented by Onely was the most comprehensive and in-depth. During the talks, the agency showed great commitment and flexibility.

All the recommendations and remarks were well described and explained with examples, so that the developers who implemented changes on the website were able to do that quickly and precisely.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

In general, after implementing all Onely's recommendations, our organic traffic grew by 129% ( compared to April 2018 to April 2020). For reference, in March/April 2018, the trend was decreasing - we were facing a 14% organic traffic loss. We've not only reversed the pattern but also made a solid foundation to continue our traffic growth.

All guidelines and recommendations provided by Onely were very substantive and delivered on time. Very detailed recommendations, with a detailed description, examples, and reference to the knowledge base, so that our evelopment team could implement them efficiently. In total, we deployed over 100 tasks. Most of them were very complex and in-depth issues.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We were impressed with how engaged and success-oriented Onely was. Their team was very open, kind, and professional. On top of that, their technical expertise and punctuality in terms of schedule was astonishing.

All of that made working with them very efficient, pleasant, and worthwhile. I also want to emphasize that Onely made complex technical issues understandable and easy to solve - our dev team was very satisfied.

We hired Onely to help us improve our visibility and traffic coming from Google Search and Google Discover. As an established online business, we’re very conscious of the importance of technical SEO.

We wanted Onely to reexamine and improve our approach and strategy of growing the online presence of both our domains. In particular, we were interested in increasing our search visibility and traffic to the critical sections of our websites coming from Google surfaces. Competition analysis played a significant role in establishing our goals and the strategy for this project.

We looked at several factors, especially previous works, skills of personnel, schedule and of course price.

This allowed us to continually evaluate our efforts and make sure we were on the right track. The specific technical SEO areas that we addressed together primarily involved our indexing strategy (solving duplicate content and keyword cannibalization issues) and crawling str.

It’s slightly too early to discuss quantifiable results of the project, as we’re still implementing many of the changes Onely suggested across our - rather large - domains. So far, we’ve seen a very significant boost in traffic coming from Google Discover to critical sections of our website, which we were particularly interested in promoting.

Onely has a unique workflow that works very well. Since they deal with high-level issues, them being able to work within our Trello together with our developers was a fantastic idea. It allowed for continuous feedback and learning in both directions.

The weekly calls turned out to be immensely valuable and productive. Wojtek and Artur were always prepared with a plan of action for the upcoming weeks and were open to suggestions.

Their data-driven approach together with a willingness to deep dive for an understanding of our specific setup, goals, and issues. No cookie-cut approach.

They reviewed our previous work and came up with a plan of action (revised and adjusted pretty early in the project due to the upcoming migration). They were providing us with the results of their analyses - spreadsheets and PDFs. Recommendations, on the other hand, were added as tasks to our project management system so that we could bomb the Onely team with questions and concerns.

They responded quickly and to the point. They provided recommendations regarding old and non-crucial content, analyzed our staging environment, and mapped all the URLs. Once we were safe and sound, we set up a deployment date and they were in the loop throughout the process.

Right after the deployment, they ran all the necessary tests. In the end, we conducted a summary call over Google Hangouts.

After months of stagnation, our visibility was suddenly unblocked and growing quickly right after we implemented recommendations from Onely.

To quantify our growth quarter over quarter: - total clicks grew by 34%, - total impressions grew by 20%, - average CTR grew by 12%. We are currently on a continuous increasing trend.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Our workflow was very effective. Onely added detailed and well-explained tasks to our PM. We didn’t have any issues with implementing changes, but when we needed more explanation regarding a particular task, they quickly responded.

We’d meet once per two weeks to discuss the status of the project and what had already been implemented. On a daily basis, we used our internal communicator for more generic discussions and PM for specific task-related talks.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Onely did a splendid job with diagnosing our web performance issues. They were on top of everything. I’m very satisfied with this cooperation.

I was looking for new areas of growth. At first, the plan was to run a content and outreach campaign with another company. However, after talking to Onely representative and watching Onely's CEO interviews on YouTube, I knew we had to readjust our plans and begin with technical optimization.

The main goal was to increase organic traffic and our revenue as a consequence. The secondary objective was to improve website speed.

Onely was referred to us by another digital agency as the ultimate choice when it comes to technical optimization.

Once we signed an agreement and provided Onely with access to necessary analytical tools and data, we've set up a new kanban board and invited Onely's team to it, where they were able to work together with our developer. From the very beginning, the team at Onely showed interest in our business goals.

I had a feeling they really want to understand our business environment and adjust to our flow in order to keep everything smooth. Onely conducted an initial audit and came up with a plan of action that we accepted. The first tasks popped up in the backlog a couple of days after we signed the agreement.

Tasks that Onely shared with our team were to the point and written so that even I (and I'm not a very technical person) could understand why the changes they suggested were necessary. They presented examples and precisely pointed out what we have to do.

They were very transparent - some suggested solutions required business decisions, so they reached out to me and offered variants to choose from that were the most optimal from Onely's perspective. Currently, we're still working with Onely on a consulting basis.

I've noticed a visibility growth of 22% in less than four months. Also, our website speed improved significantly. On the year to year basis, I noticed an improvement in organic traffic.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Onely suggested a workflow that suited us well - they suggested working within project management, providing most of the recommendations as tasks. After deploying each change, they verified whether all the outlined actions are properly implemented so we could move forward.

The communication was also professional - most of the task-related communication happened within the project management system (under specific task entry). Some of the analysis results and recommendations were provided by Onely as documents (spreadsheets, documents, flowcharts).

After delivering each of those, we meet at a video conference to discuss the next steps and our approach. Whenever I had concerns or questions, they were there to answer them and justify their strategy.

At the time we began working with Onely, our site was heavily penalized by google. We were invisible online for approximately 4 years and merely wanted to free ourselves from the penalties.

Over the period of 2012- 2016, we received fewer than 900 visitors from Search. We had worked with countless companies trying to free ourselves from the google penalty. They were recommended by a content marketing company. Honestly, I didn't have any expectation that we'd see any different results than others attempted. Just kinda resigned to the idea that Google was going to not be part of our strategy going forward.

We designed a whole new website with new internal linking structure, analyzed our existing linking profile from top to bottom (over 3 million links) created a massive disavow file. Began to create high quality, relevant content (both on and off-site). They took over the entire SEO Effort.

Excellent - They have been methodical and detailed. Their recommendations are well detailed so that our Dev team can implement them without much (if any) back and forth.

Their investment in Stratos success. I don't feel like they are a third-party service provider. I feel that they are an internal part of our team.

Please describe your company and your position there.

I’m CEO of a cell phone trade-in in website based in the US, we’re one of the leading vendors for selling your old electronics online and have been featured on the likes of Forbes, Mashable, CBS, NBC and 100’s of leading news publications.

For what projects/services did your company hire Onely?

We hired Onely as they are a global leader technical SEO, their cutting edge investigation into JavaScript rendering along with their speaker presence at SEO conferences across the world put them on our radar.

What were your goals for this project?

We have been running in house technical SEO using popular market tools to crawl and provide recommendations on the issues we had. It came to the stage where we felt our platform could be achieving greater visibility and wanted to get a second opinion on the structure and current state of Google’s crawling and rendering of the website.

How did you select this vendor?

I found their company through following talks at conferences and their YouTube channel.

The experiments and investigations into how big brands using well-known SEO agencies we’re getting fundamental technical SEO wrong put them at the forefront of our list of vendors to speak to.

I spoke on a Google hangout with their owner about our concerns and we progressed from there.

Describe the project in detail.

Following a face to face Google hangout, I was introduced to the project manager and staff that were assigned to my project.

We provided a list of all the work we had done for them to review, this was in document form as well as using a loom video to talk through the areas of the site we had been working on, highlighting concerns.

By doing this, it enabled us to work in synergy, so Onely could accurately focus on the important deliverables for the project without wasting resource on ground that had already been covered.

What was the team composition?

The project began with speaking to their owner, Bartosz, on a Google hangout. During this call, we outlined our core concerns and he was able to assign the right team and project manager to handle our specific needs. Our project manager, Maria, assigned a team to work on the project and access was granted to all areas of the site required. From the initial call, their team was active on the project within 24hrs.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Within a week the in-depth technical audit was returned to me via Google sheets, enabling us to proactively communicate of areas of the report and get any feedback we required.

The actions we clearly described with screenshots, reference photos and URLs so we could input the plan with ease into our internal project management software.

We have been working through the tasks, their team has been quick to provide in-depth responses and add additional insight to anything new that has arisen.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

As mentioned, the use of Google docs, photos, screen recordings and Google hangouts and other proactive workflows has enabled both our teams to work very effectively. Communication has been excellent and delivery was much faster than we hoped for.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I was most impressed with the level of knowledge within their team. It’s rare to find a group of employees with such specialist knowledge, they uncovered much more than we expected and for that we’re extremely thankful.

Are there any areas for improvement?

There’s not really anything I can fault here, it was all pretty seamless and a much better experience than most agencies we’ve worked with.
