Portfolio

Key clients:

We have successfully developed many web development projects, including blogs, publishing and talent management platforms, e-commerce sites, travel agencies, a HIPAA compliant web app and a non-profit contest platform. Our key clients are: The Underwear Expert, Ceros Inc., World Politics Review, Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Solere

Solere Digital selected Nopio as their development partner for this project because of Nopio’s excellence in communication, creativity, and ability to deliver unique and innovative platforms. Together, Nopio and Solere Digital forged a custom-built solution that combined Ruby on Rails and Solr search. Today, the Manifesto application allows Solere Digital and their clients to:

- Acquire new talent via applications submitted through online forms
- Approve or reject applicants within the platform as they go through the interview and vetting process
- Create a database of approved applicants and filter them by using rating, rates, location, availability, and other criteria
- Manage projects and budgets based on the talent selected
- Easily find and assign new members to projects in order to form unique teams

Nopio was also tasked to create a hosting solution and a deployment strategy for the product, which is handled by a combination of Docker...

World Politics Review

In order to accommodate the client’s needs, our team reused bits and pieces of the new design to create the missing views of the site. In each case, the client was presented with multiple mockups of possible looks and descriptions outlining the pros and cons. Since this process was based on prototyping pageviews, it was significantly more efficient than a standard design workflow. Additionally, the site has been updated to use Razor templating engine and a new deployment automation.

Alliance for Young Artists and Writers

The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers (http://www.artandwriting.org/) has very specific needs in terms of running the program. Through most of the year, the main function of the project is providing information about the program. Their remaining time is very busy. Site traffic explodes from about 30 thousands to 1.5 million pageviews per week. Students upload hundreds of gigabytes of work to the system. Panels of judges from around the nation then review thousands of submissions, judge them, and assign awards. To make all of this possible, a very specialized set of tools is needed.

The Nopio team has been tasked with building the tools up to the specification. Using C# .Net MVC, MsSQL, BackboneJS, Solr search and Amazon AWS, we created a system that fulfills all the requirements of The Alliance.

The Underwear Expert

The Underwear Expert wanted to create a subscription model business in the form of a custom underwear-of-the-month club. The challenge was to automate the process of ordering and managing stock, processing payments and developing tools to manage the business on the e-commerce platform.

Ceros

Ceros’ team brought Nopio in and discussed which approach would solve their sites issues best. Together, we formulated a plan to:

- Clean up the website’s WordPress theme code

- Build a new WordPress site to host the blog and import the existing content from HubSpot

- Build a new support site in WordPress to stand in place of the old one

- Set up an easy and automated deployment process for each of the sites

When Nopio was done, Ceros’ sites became easy to maintain with a unified brand look and a seamless user experience.

Patten Studio

Thanks to a recommendation by one of our clients, Patten Studio brought us in and tasked our skilled team with creating a fresh WordPress site with a new custom-built theme.
With the design delivered by Patten Studio, we presented a plan to create a system that:

- allowed a total and easy control over the content of the website

- enabled easy future maintenance and performance optimizations

- supported possible future extensions of the theme

Feedback summary:

The client saw a growth rate of over 100% and the new cloud platform that they migrated to was able to keep up with that growth rate. They appreciate that Nopio was flexible and able to adapt to the changing needs of the project. Along with flexibility, they were able to meet their deadlines.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a non-profit which runs a yearly competition for young artists and writers between grades seventh through 12th. I no longer work for the company, but I was director of web and information technology when I was there.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Nopio?

When I arrived at the Alliance, we were facing rapid growth, and we had an unstable, buggy platform, hosted on physical servers which could not respond to the cyclical nature of our program. I worked closely with Nopio to migrate over to a scalable cloud-based system, and over the next five years we enhanced the underlying platform, designing and implementing custom-built solutions to address the growing needs of the organization and its constituents.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Nopio migrated us onto AWS [Amazon Web Services]. The tools we were using were EC2, elastic load balancing, S3, and Amazon RDS [Relational Database Service]. We also built digital archives which contained several thousand records. Our working relationship was very close. I oversaw the product on location and evaluated the need for updates. I had trust in Nopio’s ability to give constructive and objective feedback for different solutions. I presented the problem to Nopio, and then I would work with them to come up with solutions. Sometimes I would create wireframes and sometimes Nopio would. Sometimes we would build the solution incrementally based on the urgency.

How did you come to work with Nopio?

I started at Scholastic in January 2010, and Nopio had already been vetted before I was hired on.

How much have you invested with Nopio?

We spent between $100,000 and $150,000 per year with Nopio.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project is complete.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We had 140,000 submissions the year we started, and by the time I left, we had more than 310,000. We grew by more than 100% while I was there. Once we migrated to a cloud-based platform which could accommodate the growth and cyclical nature, then we had close to zero downtime. Everyone was very satisfied with Nopio's work.

How did Nopio perform from a project management standpoint?

Nopio was very flexible and was able to adapt to whatever our project structure was. I worked with the account manager, he was always very aware of our cycles and our high urgency moments, and always made himself available when we needed him. With larger scope projects, we would set deadlines, and they were able to meet those. If a deadline was unrealistic, Nopio talked through it with us, and the same way was done with the budget. We also had some budget concerns and set a ceiling when we needed to scale back. Nopio was very good at communicating about where we were at with the budget.

What did you find most impressive about Nopio?

I appreciated Nopio's ability to pass on knowledge. As an offsite consulting entity, our fear was losing the programmer. Nopio was good at bringing a second person on to help and made sure there was no loss of knowledge. I notice they are expanding into different fields including designing, SEO [search engine optimization], etc. which is great.

Are there any areas Nopio could improve?

For our needs, the team at Nopio was just right.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the creative director of an agency that specializes in interactive installations. Our work is about creating interactive designs in the physical world, including moving sculptures, kinetic objects, and computer-controlled physical objects.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Nopio?

At the time, we were doing a rebranding.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We did a visual rebranding and updated all of our marketing touchpoints, including the website. That is where Nopio came in. They helped us with the front-end development and backend CMS system WordPress, which is what we were using for our site. We did the design of the site and then worked with them on building the user interfaces on the backend and WordPress functionality.

How did you come to work with Nopio?

I don’t remember how we found out about them. Talking to their team, we could tell they were detail-oriented, thorough, and timely. Their costs were much lower in Poland than in New York City.

How much have you invested with Nopio?

We spent less than $10,000 on the project.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started the project March of 2016 and it was completed June of 2016.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We don’t have any specific numbers. In terms of being able to bring our designs to life and functional, it’s been very beneficial to have that online presence. The website is functional and responsive. They were able to give suggestions for any problem that came up.

How did Nopio perform from a project management standpoint?

The 1 point of contact I had was Peter, who was super responsive. We drove the process by providing the requirements and they responded to those requirements.

What did you find most impressive about Nopio?

If there was something that needed improvements, they weren’t afraid to talk to us about that.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Nopio?

We were trying to launch a custom apparel curation system.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Nopio developed our platform from scratch using Ruby on Rails, Elastic Search, MySQL, and MongoDB. We had several industry-specific requirements for our underwear subscription program. We have worked with Nopio from business and technical strategy perspectives, explaining our challenges and technical requirements. Nopio used this information for developing a technical spec.

How did you come to work with Nopio?

Nopio's owner had worked for another technology company which I hired a few years ago. We stayed in touch over time.

How much have you invested with Nopio?

The cost of Nopio's work was above $200,000.

We have an ongoing relationship. After our software platform was launched, Nopio has continued to improve and maintain it.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

World Politics Review is a publisher of online expert analysis on foreign policy and international affairs. I am the owner and founder of the company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Nopio?

We had been working with a web development company based in New York which was using some Polish developers. That company went on to focus on bigger clients, so we couldn't work with them anymore. We needed another company which could handle our web development and ongoing maintenance. We are a small company with only 5 employees, most of them editorial. We don't have an in-house IT or development team.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We have a custom CMS for our website built on .NET. Nopio handles any changes to the CMS, as well as providing backend and frontend web development. During our time with Nopio, we've had a complete frontend redesign, a project which they successfully led.

How did you come to work with Nopio?

One of the founders from Nopio had worked with our previous development agency.

How much have you invested with Nopio?

We spend between $20,000 and $30,000 per year on Nopio's services.

What is the status of this engagement?

We have an ongoing retainer with Nopio. They serve as our maintenance team through a minimum of 30 hours which we allocate every month. Whenever we have specific projects on top of that, we will have a separate negotiation.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Nopio has helped us solve a number of problems, always going the extra mile. I'm not a technical person, but I can bring to Nopio a basic description of my goal, and they can provide me with the knowledge for building our systems. Nopio will typically provide us 3-4 different solutions, for which we'll have a back-and-forth discussion.

As a recent example, we wanted to gather more email addresses from visitors. We have a paywall site, so only subscribers can read entire articles beyond the first hit from Google. We wanted to offer users a way of trading a subscription to our newsletter for access to one free article. We were already using a system called Intercom, which is a customer communication tool. I wanted to know if there would be a way of creatively using their API in order to automate the process of exchanging an email address for an article. Nopio figured out a solution by which, whenever a user enters their email, they will receive an automatically-generated link to the article they were viewing. Nopio took an off-the-shelf system and modified it in order to do something which it wasn't designed for. It works very well for us, so Nopio saved us money by modifying something that we were already using, instead of creating it from scratch. The result of this was a dramatic increase in the number of newsletter subscriptions we received for minimal cost.

What did you find most impressive about Nopio?

Nopio is a very trustworthy and honest company. They aim to develop a long-term relationship with the client, aiming to save us money instead of overcharging for services. This helps in the long run, by getting Nopio repeat business. We've had such a close working relationship with Nopio that I've actually visited their offices in Cracow. Nopio is a team of good people which I highly recommend.

Are there any areas Nopio could improve?

I don't have any criticisms other than the capacity limitations. They’re a young company, and at this point, they're not an organization which can take on huge amounts of work from large companies.

The client is extremely satisfied with Nopio's work. The client enjoys working with Nopio for the attention to detail and unwavering commitment to quality he receives.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

‎Solere Digital is an agency offering a staffing and talent management tool. We work primarily with freelancers and offshore development teams. Our company was formally launched in 2016. We're very young and work primarily in the content and commerce space, offering content marketing and strategy, as well as e-commerce strategy and platform development.

I am the Chief Executive Officer.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Nopio?

We needed to bring on knowledgeable developers with a broad range of technical experience. We also needed a company that we could trust and which would have a real presence at the table, not just take our specs and run with them, given that our tool would be central to the business. We needed a partner to work with us on user experience and the flow of the product, and wanted to be sure that they would not reuse our code for other purposes.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Nopio helped build our tool. It involved taking our idea for a staffing and talent management solution and building out a scope. There wasn't an existing model for it that we could fall back on. We shared many ideas with Nopio in the beginning, created light specifications, running through user stories, shaping them a bit better, and going through prioritization and structuring.

Nopio built our platform using open-source code, with Apache Solr as the primary backend for searching and discovering talent. Nopio also helped with testing and built much of the user interface design through a dedicated resource.

We've also worked with Nopio on a project which involved taking an ExpressionEngine e-commerce platform and revamping its flow and user experience. We made several iterations and translated the US version into a Japanese one. Nopio was in charge of everything, including ideation and scope setting based on our budget and the available technology, as well as launching the platform and installing various language packs.

We used Jira as a ticket management system.

How did you come to work with Nopio?

I had worked with Nopio in the past and knew that they were very good. Their principal and I started working together when I was running the project management team at a different company. We kept in touch, and when I started my current company and needed development resources, particularly a company that would be able to scale the effort, Nopio was my only choice.

How much have you invested with Nopio?

Nopio has worked on projects of various sizes for us. The larger projects have been in the $100,000 to $200,000 range.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

I assessed my success based on project delivery against the timeline and budget. Nopio consistently held up to both of those. Even when we had budget constraints, Nopio allowed me to scope the project in order to deliver within our limitations. The team has always delivered on time, and whenever something stretched out, we were kept informed.

What did you find most impressive about Nopio?

The reason for maintaining such a long relationship with the Nopio team was their attitude and personalities. Nopio has a work ethic which I haven't seen with other developers, even though I've worked with hundreds over time. Nopio's members have positive personalities. I've never had a difficult or negative conversation with them, which wasn't true for other vendors. Oftentimes, things got hairy in terms of timelines and budget, but there was an urgency for the communication put in place with the team, letting me know if there was a problem or if something was not technically possible. Every issue was brought up in a very positive manner, making it easy for me to work with Nopio.

Are there any areas Nopio could improve?

There have been 1-2 instances over all the projects I've worked on with Nopio over the last 8-9 years in which the project that we proposed wasn't achievable through the range of skillsets available. Examples include mobile iOS development or .NET. Without exception, Nopio found the right team or person, so we came to work with their partners in this manner. Nopio managed those partners, acting as a single point of contact. It was an overall positive experience, and Nopio has been able to handle 99% of the work we have sent to them, doing an amazing job.
