I’m the COO of an IoT startup. We primarily provide indoor location services to different entities, including panic buttons for hospitality and education. Our main technology is doing accurate indoor location determination.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with NIX?
We needed support with the development of web and Android applications.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
NIX has developed a web app and a couple of Android apps for us, integrating them with some of our existing services. They’ve basically provided tools to aid in deployment. When we go to a new site, there are a lot of steps and information required, and these tools help streamline some of those processes. We’ve pushed off the development to them because we don’t have enough resources to do it in-house. We’re working on other features, and by pushing these processes off to them, they’ve helped us get them implemented.
Initially, we went through the UX design process. They proposed particular UX designs, and we gave them feedback before they implemented them. The team has followed our design guidelines and worked within our requirements.
The web app has been developed from scratch, although the database services utilize a lot of our existing database services. As for the mobile app, it was running functionally, but we knew it wasn’t architected optimally. Thus, we've relied on NIX's architectural experience to improve the entire app design.
As for the technology stack, NIX has interacted with our Django services and added some REST APIs. The Android apps have been developed using Kotlin, and the web app has been built using JavaScript. They’ve also helped us publish the app on Google Play.
What is the team composition?
We’ve worked with 5–8 developers from NIX at different times across different projects. Certain teammates come in with certain skills, and the team shifts as the project progresses. We’ve mainly dealt with 2–3 UX designers, one main project manager, and 2–3 testers.
How did you come to work with NIX?
We got in touch with them because of a recommendation from another startup. We knew of another startup that had used them and was happy with them — that's why we engaged with NIX.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent around $200,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working together in December 2023, and the engagement is ongoing. Currently, we're starting additional projects.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
NIX's work has been excellent. They’re technically very knowledgeable.
How did NIX perform from a project management standpoint?
Their communication is very good, and they’re very diligent at pushing towards a schedule. We define certain deadlines together, and they’re very diligent about making sure they meet their deadlines. It’s a very productive relationship. We use Google Workspace to communicate, including Google Chat and Google Meet. We also use Jira for project management.
Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?
The project manager is the one that organizes and keeps everything going. She smooths out all the issues and wrinkles. We’re trying to support their team as best as we can with limited resources, and they’re trying to do whatever they can to help us achieve our goals. She’s the conduit to get everything done.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They have expertise in many areas. As we’ve needed different kinds of expertise, they’ve brought in the expertise required for our project. As our project has shifted and changed, they’ve brought in the right personnel to get the job done. Every person we’ve worked with is very knowledgeable in their area. It’s very enjoyable to work with them because they know what they’re doing.
Are there any areas they could improve?
NIX has done exactly what we’ve needed. The times there have been issues have been more on our side. We haven’t given them feedback fast enough. We haven’t necessarily monitored it closely enough at certain points. We’ve wanted to change direction slightly, and we haven’t been fast enough in giving them that feedback. Most of the problems have been on our side.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
If your team lacks the necessary technical expertise, they can bring it. We’ve been very successful at describing the problem we’re trying to solve and the requirements the solution has to fit within. For example, we’ve needed an Android app that solves a problem, and they’ve figured out most of the details. For us, that’s the best kind of solution we can get.

The team is so transparent that they inform us when they finish their tasks early and ask for more work.
How did NIX perform from a project management standpoint?
They’ve done an excellent job with project management. The team is incredibly organized and communicative. We use GitLab to assign tasks and Slack to communicate. Additionally, we have daily phone calls and weekly planning meetings.
What did you find most impressive about them?
The NIX team is highly organized and talented. The developers always think critically about their work and come back with suggestions that lead to a better solution. Additionally, their rates are super reasonable.
Are there any areas they could improve?
They could’ve been more proactive with some of their suggestions. However, it’s not a big issue, and we’re satisfied with the project.

Plan each sprint in advance to keep the team working as efficiently as possible.

We wanted to redesign our corporate website and migrate to a more powerful CMS.
SOLUTION
How did you select NIX and what were the deciding factors?
A colleague of mine recommended NIX. They have a reliable reputations. NIX offered a decent value for a reasonable price.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
First the NIX team analysed the old website and interviewed me and other stakeholders about why the current site is not satisfying our needs anymore, and what should be improved. Afterwards they worked on the architecture and structure of the website (UX). After approval of UX they draw a few versions of new design for several pages (UI). After a couple of improvements and suggestions from our side they changed the design concept, so we liked it and approved.
They suggested using a Laravel framework (PHP) as it provides a great performance for web and mobile devices, while costing a little more than an ordinary WordPress site. Once the design was approved the coding doesn't took much time. There were minor bugs with layout on some screen sizes and browsers, but the fixed all of them on time. The integration with CRM, Marketing automation and Google analytics took more time than I expected, however works great now. The project was released on time.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
We all like our new website: the structure is more convenient, it looks fresh and new. Google page speed results improved. Looking forward to improving the Conversion Rate and increase of the website traffic.

We had weekly online meetings: they showed us what was done and plans for the next week, got approval or feedback when needed. Used: Zoom, Telegram, Jira, Figma, Google sheets, Adobe

I think some QA and integration works could be completed faster.

We started our collaboration in July 2017 and it’s nearly complete.

Anecdotally, NIX’s deliveries were good. Their level of collaboration and focus on delivering value was good. They participated in the delivery of test automation, which was a good enhancement. The quality of the deliveries was as expected.
How did NIX perform from a project management standpoint?
We used JIRA to track our work in every location. Their project management was good. I dealt with a project manager with whom I discussed and resolved any issues. They collaborated well across the company including teams based in other locations.

They performed well. Their contribution to test automation was the most valuable contribution relative to other agencies.
Are there any areas they could improve?
One area for improvement is in the strength of their communication.

Ensure that the assigned project manager has strong communication skills as we found that to be an effective way to improve the collaboration.

How did NIX perform from a project management standpoint?
They’re very professional and our project manager is a good team leader. She heads the staff and demonstrates a really high level of expertise. We had a really good experience working with the NIX team because they stuck to our schedule.
The local support team is in touch with us all the time to make sure the job gets done as planned. We call one another weekly, or sometimes daily. Everything has gone really well. Their staff even visited us all the way from Ukraine. Overall, customer experience is great.

They adapt to meet our needs. We cooperate really well with them, and they make adjustments so we don’t have any complaints.

No, I don’t think so.
