The company created an app that reads data collected from a continuous glucose monitor and displays a glucose line graph in the app. Notifications are sent to the user if their glucose rises or drops below certain levels. The app also includes logs for sleep, water, food, and activity.

Our goals were to increase organic traffic to the website and to increase the number of leads from organic search to sign up/enter the product's funnel.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We found Momentic from a referral and we vetted a handful of other SEO agencies at the same time.

We asked Momentic to complete an in-depth proposal and analysis of the site and SEO health of the site, and also asked them to complete a competitive analysis, a strategy on how we could increase leads and traffic from organic search while also outdoing competitors, and to create a mathematical formula for how we'd quantify what success looked like.

Momentic takes an immersive, hands-on approach. They use Asana as their main project management tool, utilize spreadsheets to track more granular progress of project deliverables, and create customized Google Data Studio dashboards to show proof that what they're doing is working.

They're always available, were willing to join our Slack channel and respond to questions there, and we had weekly check-ins and brainstorming as well as monthly analytics reviews with the C-suite. Overall, they're very accessible and flexible and communicative, which is a bit outside of the norm for most agencies.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Their warm, friendly style and how devoted they are to learning the business and being willing to pivot and advise when the numbers advise pivoting and testing. They work quickly and are willing to do tasks that can lie slightly outside of their scope to help smaller startups (such as dev tasks).

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

There was a slight hiccup when we were first getting started with Momentic and diving in to having them move forward with content planning, discovering writers that matched our style, and assigning articles to writers.

Setting expectations of a project discovery and learning phase for the first 2-3 weeks could have been helpful in managing C-level expectations of showing initial results.

What challenge were you trying to address with Momentic?

I knew that our site was in bad shape after migrating from Wix to WordPress. I wanted to make sure that it was being indexed properly by Google.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Momentic helped us ensure that the pages outside of our home page were being properly indexed. From there, they helped us optimize our on-page SEO throughout our site. They helped us optimize our header tags, page titles, keywords, and copy.

 Momentic made recommendations based on our search volume in addition to how our competitors were also targeting similar keywords. They also made sure our Google analytics instance was in place, too. They looked at how we were setting up channels and different conversion goals. The team made sure we got clean data so we could make better decisions.

Additionally, they got into some content analytics as well. Once they learned which actions we were most interested in tracking, they built out a dashboard in Google data studio. That tool helped us understand the different content that was actually driving traffic to the site and how it was performing in a single, easy to look at dashboard.

How did you come to work with Momentic?

I worked with Momentic at my previous company. At the time I interviewed 8–10 different SEO agencies. It didn’t feel like anyone had a truly differentiated approach in how they were looking at things. Our CMO reached out to a few mentors in his network. He suggested that we check out Momentic.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent $18,000–$20,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in August 2020, and we wrapped up in February 2021. We only stopped working together because we hired an in-house SEO resource. If we didn’t hire that person, we would’ve definitely continued to work with them.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

In the six months that we worked together, we had a 78% increase in users. We also had a 79% increase in new users and a 70% increase in sessions.

How did Momentic perform from a project management standpoint?

We had a Slack channel, which was helpful. We also had an initial readout with them within the first 30–45 days where they presented a six-month roadmap. After that, we met monthly as a broader group. I also had a more tactical meeting every two weeks with Tyler.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They were always quick to provide recommendations in different areas. They were very good at initial recommendations, taking feedback, and mixing best practices with our business needs to help us reach our goals. They were very flexible and it was much appreciated.

They offer a lot of bang for their buck. We got a lot of value out of them. They’d be the first team that I reach out to if I ever need help in the same area.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would’ve been great if they could’ve written copy for us. At the same time, we didn’t ask them to do that for us. Additionally, since we’re a two-person team we couldn’t act on all of the recommendations they offered. It would’ve been nice if they could start on some of those recommendations for us but that wasn’t outlined in their SOW.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

My advice is to do as much customer research as you can. If you’re expecting them to come in and tell you which topics to focus on, you have to find the right balance between writing for people and writing for search engines.

I work for Fleet Farm, a medium-sized retailer in the Midwest. We sell everything from hunting and fishing products to pet and farm items to hardware, consumables, and automotive goods. Our saying is: “If Fleet Farm doesn’t have it, then you don’t need it.”

I handle our online advertising, primarily our paid and organic SEM.

What challenge were you trying to address with Momentic?

Initially, we brought them in to do a technical evaluation of our website. We don’t have a lot of internal resources; we’re brick-and-mortar-focused, so we don’t have a lot of e-commerce seats filled. We run on Oracle, but we don’t have a proper CMS, which raises issues code-wise. It’s hard to detect those issues sometimes because our builds are stacked on top of each other. Momentic came in to evaluate the search-friendliness of our site.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

After the site evaluation, our largest project happened early on when we dealt with a schema markup issue on the site.

As much as they work on technical issues, they also work on content. We didn’t have a ton of content on our site when they started, so they’ve filled in category pages — usually contributing 2–3 paragraphs on any of our 1,100 pages. Search engines need to know what the page is about besides just the product and its link.

Our process is collaborative. We’re seasonal, so I have a lot of inside knowledge about what works and what our customers connect with, as well as what isn’t worth spending time on. Momentic also goes out and does their own deep research on category types and keywords that represent opportunities for us.

They contribute to technical tasks constantly, so we’re always searching for the happy medium between technical tasks and content tasks.

What is the team composition?

I regularly communicate with three people: Tyler (COO), Lauren (Digital Strategy Analyst), and Tory (Digital Strategy & SEO Analyst). Tyler is my main point of contact — I’d label him as my account manager. He does an awesome job and is good with communication. Lauren and Tory are both content-focused.

How did you come to work with Momentic?

Their sister company is our primary paid search agency, and they introduced me to Momentic.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’ve been working together since August 2018. There’s a monthly fee we pay. Our contract is set through 2021, and then we have to renew.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It’s hard to call out what’s improved, as we’re more focused on pivoting away from issues. Momentic is constantly monitoring and evaluating our performance, whether it’s rankings or site-speed. With site-speed, we made some additions to our code that apparently hurt our site speed, so I put in a ticket to fix it. Additionally, they noticed that we were making multiple HTTP calls when we didn’t need to. Our 3rd-party development team came up with a solution, but we wouldn’t have known to fix it without Momentic pointing it out.

The other part of what makes measuring impact difficult is that 2020 was such a strange year. There was a lot of panic-buying going on, and there still is, to some degree, so everything is showing large gains. Two of the big categories people searched for in the last year were “guns” and “ammo,” so we saw a massive increase there from our Google My Business listings. The true impact is hard to measure.

How did Momentic perform from a project management standpoint?

We use Asana; they set it up so it works easily. At first, I wasn’t familiar with it, but they made modifications that organized it in a familiar manner. I have ongoing weekly calls with Tyler, and other relevant team members. Ongoing communication has been very helpful in developing where we want to go. There are open discussions.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I have close one-on-one communication with Tyler. In my work with larger media companies previously, I had to battle through a lot of layers before I got to the people who were working on my account. You lose something in those intervening layers, and I don’t have to deal with those at Momentic. I speak directly to Tyler, Lauren, and Tory.

Additionally, they knew who we were before we started — they’d shopped with us and had experience with us. The larger companies around the country don’t have that familiarity.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I’m leaning on them for Google Analytics and Tag Manager services, and I wish they could do more with that. They’re not an analytics company, however, so maybe I shouldn’t expect more from them. I put those services on my wish list.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

They’re great at understanding your needs and addressing them. I haven’t seen any shortcomings with them.

I’m the chief product officer of Saeidan. Ask Claire is our Medicare education and plan finder application for people who are looking to make better-informed decisions about their Medicare options.

What challenge were you trying to address with Momentic?

Momentic helped us with Ask Claire and the organic side of marketing.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Momentic provided SEO services. First, they wanted to see how we were situated. Our site was built in Angular, which is a single-page application (SPA) JavaScript framework. The way that you implement Robots.txt, an XML sitemap, and metadata on a SPA is technically very different. 

Then, they dove into what it means to do good SEO in the context of a SPA, as well as in the space in which we were working. They provided technical recommendations that pertained to both development and SEO.

Most substantively, Momentic helped us understand how everything on our site should be organized. Although the site has only been live for a year, there is a lot of information. Momentic looked at whether the site was organized in an optimal way, and if it wasn’t, they helped us come up with an approach to organizing it.

The CEO of our company and I have both spent over 20 years working in healthcare, so we had a good sense of what keywords we wanted to target and why. Momentic helped us organize and frame our approach to those keywords. ‘Medicare supplement’ might be a keyword, but it’s important to understand nuances around this keyword, such as whether people are searching for ‘what is a Medicare supplement’ versus ‘how much does Medicare supplement cost.’ Reaffirming that context was helpful.

What is the team composition?

I worked most closely with Tyler (COO & Director of SEO) and Tony (CEO & President). Tyler was the more technical person, and I think he found the SPA aspect of the angular implementation to be a nice challenge. He looked into how the SPA actually affects SEO and how we should think through that build. It was really helpful to work with somebody who found this interesting and wanted to figure out how we could work within those parameters and constraints to make our SEO efforts as effective as possible.

Tony helped set the stage for what our competitors were doing and how we were thinking about that. As a consumer platform seeking to help people make potentially complicated decisions, Tony emphasized that there had to be a premium placed on easily accessible, clarifying information. We needed to respond to beneficiaries and people shopping for Medicare in such a way that would be conducive to helping them achieve their ends, which was really invaluable context for us.

How did you come to work with Momentic?

We launched the early iteration of the tool in January 2020, and we worked with 2–3 other agencies who said they specialized in SEO. The information we were getting was reasonably consistent, but it wasn’t helpful — these agencies didn’t provide any context.

I previously worked at another company with our head of technology. He lives in Milwaukee and was aware of Momentic — he said they seemed really sharp. He put us in contact with Momentic and their partner organization who does our PPC.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our first conversation was in early December 2020, and we wrapped up this project in early February 2021. We plan to engage them again.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They explained their recommendations and set us up for success, so that as we roll out this next version, we’re starting off on the right foot. Their work will enable consumers to get to our product much easier.

It’s too early to have metrics. This is a process that takes time, and we just wrapped up less than a month ago. We’re working through a rebuild of our site and simultaneously implementing the changes that Momentic suggested. I will also acknowledge that we started from ground zero, so we don’t have unrealistic expectations.

Both the CEO and I have marketing backgrounds, but SEO is outside of our central remit. Having a partner who deeply understood SEO and could help us come up to speed at a level that was appropriate for what we were trying to achieve was incredibly helpful.

How did Momentic perform from a project management standpoint?

Throughout the project, they provided periodic recommendations. We knew we’d be getting a debrief at the end of January, but these routine suggestions were unanticipated. We were very pleased that they took the time to let us know what they found so that we could address certain things sooner rather than later. They provided the context that we asked for. 

The full debrief at the end was outstanding. The report that they generated was one of the best that I’ve received throughout my entire career — it was pointed, and they didn’t mince words. Their recommendations were clear, and they gave us the context that we’d been looking for from the beginning, that no one else had been able to provide.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Momentic's work was good, thorough, and fast. They're SEO specialists. It was a pleasure to work with Momentic, and I’m excited to continue working with them moving forward.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would be really hard to fault them. The challenges that we ran into had to do with the SPA, which is the way that the web is evolving. I think that SEO companies in general should recognize that, while a good amount of the web is still built on platforms like WordPress, SPAs are becoming more relevant.

Any advice for potential customers?

It was as easy as I could’ve imagined it being. Just have an open mind — SEO is a little bit of an art and a science. The reason you work with someone like Momentic is that you can’t know everything, so there will be times that they challenge some of your assumptions.

They will raise questions you hadn’t thought of, which is a great thing. They did that with tact and without making us feel attacked. The most important thing for us was getting our site’s users the information that they need, so we didn’t want Momentic to hold back. They handled it supremely well.

I run an e-commerce site for digital and subscription-based sheet music. I’m the general manager. The site offers over 300,000 sheet music titles for all instruments and skill levels.

I was tapped to unify the entire business and needed help merging separate e-commerce platforms for North America and European customers. We hired them to outline a plan for best practices of transitioning the platforms while maintaining SEO value.

They’ve been our SEO partner since 2018. We relied on them to maintain our existing SEO value while merging two 20-year-old sites together. They were also responsible for the execution and migration of their SEO plan. That involved implementing site maps and correctly tagging our products. 

While we were working on the migration project, we decided to keep their team on retainer for ongoing technical SEO, content management, and keyword research.

SEO can be forgotten about as an online business, but they’ve helped us keep it front and center.
