Custom Software for Enterprises and Startups
Started in 2000 in Washington DC, MassLight has served the DMV for 18+ years. We serve enterprises and startups with full-stack development and long-term project management services.
Enterprise clients choose us because of our depth of knowledge and experience architecting, developing, and managing complex platforms. We have significant, multi-year engagements with large enterprise clients in the Private and Public sectors developing and maintaining complex web applications.
We have been building mobile applications since the iOS App Store first launched. We have extensive experience developing native applications for Android(Java/Kotlin) and iOS (Swift/Objective-C), and have also built hybrid apps leveraging frameworks such as React Native. Our portfolio includes apps built for in-house projects, aspiring startups, commercial clients, and non-profit organizations.
We use AWS or Microsoft Azure to manage server-side infrastructure. We have extensive experience building and maintaining traditional hosted infrastructures to vend both RESTful services and web applications on AWS using EC2 (Linux, JBoss, Tapestry), RDS (MySQL, PostgreSQL), and S3.
We also offer Build for Equity services, partnering with early-stage startups to provide software development in exchange for Equity. This has proven to be a win-win for startup founders: they gain an expert tech team and retain their cash for sales, marketing, or strategic hires. Build for Equity is simply a better way to bootstrap tech-enabled startups, and our track record of successful partnerships proves this.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I'm a co-founder and CEO of Pacify. We're a telehealth platform that works primarily in maternal and child health.
What challenge were you trying to address with MassLight?
We have a fairly complicated backend that we use to securely manage our health data. We also have iOS and Android apps for our consumers as well as our provider teams that are fielding calls from those consumers. As soon as we founded our company, we realized that we needed a vendor to help us with our technology needs.
What was the scope of their involvement?
They handled the entire process from developing our platform to deploying and maintenaning it. They were also involved in the early design and wireframing and they were extremely proficient at every stage.
What is the team composition?
We work directly with their CEO Daniel, a lead programmer, and other members of their team.
How did you come to work with MassLight?
We met Daniel at a conference and he immediately understood what we were trying to accomplish.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with them in May 2015, and the relationship is ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We saw a dramatic improvement in the functionality of our core technology. Before engaging MassLight, the MVP of our technology had about 90% success rate on connecting calls, which is the core of what we do. Once MassLight redesigned our technology from ground up, that number went up to 99%. They do a very high-quality work and we haven't missed a single SLA (Service Level Agreement) because of their support.
How did MassLight perform from a project management standpoint?
We've never had any issues over the course of our relationship. They've met every deadline and every goal. We use Github to track the project.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They're dedicated to doing things the right way without cutting corners. They do that even when it doesn't optimize their profit in the short run because it might require them to spend more time on a project. Also, they're very responsive. If we have any bugs, they address them within minutes–not within hours or days.
Are there any areas they could improve?
They focus on the coding and the skills that go into the backend development, but the creative side of things has never been their focus. In our case, it worked out very well because we have an in-house design team. But in order to cater to more clients, they could focus a bit more on the UX/UI side of things.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Treat them like a partner rather than a contractor. The more you involve them in your strategy and mission, the better the relationship will be.
The functionality of the core technology has improved dramatically and the success rate reached 99%. MassLight met all goals and deadlines, while their responsiveness and commitment to the project’s success helped them deliver a high-quality product.
