BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I own a law firm that markets heavily in the DUI space. I’m the sole practitioner but I have two attorneys working under my banner. I do all the marketing, and that’s where I coordinate with Marketing by Data.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Marketing by Data?

Marketing by Data helps with our marketing campaigns and our website updates. This is really a volume business. I’ve always got to be out looking for new clients, so our main goal with Marketing by Data is to acquire and sign new clients. Within that, other goals include reducing cost per acquisition and finding cheaper ways other than pay-per-click to gain work.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I like to keep very hands-on in the work, so we’ll collaborate to expand campaigns or fine-tune them into different geographical areas. As a law firm, we don’t have a specific need to do social media. But DUI defense is such a congested space. I haven’t put much effort into it because I know that just SEO isn’t enough. It’s pretty much optimizing on pay-per-click and helping with web design or web changes to improve my quality score or lower my cost per conversion.

How did you come to work with Marketing by Data?

Jason, the main guy at Marketing by Data, used to be the head marketing guy at the big player in Southern California, a firm with a marketing budget in the millions. I knew him from that, so I reached out. I did go through quite a few people before I settled on Jason: I went through three other firms and it was a total waste of time. Because Jason had been dealing with multimillion-dollar campaigns, I didn’t know if the scale would be appropriate for him. But it was just fine.

How much have you invested with Marketing by Data?

For 2017, I’ll probably end up spending up to $24,000/year.

What is the status of this engagement?

I’ve been working with them exclusively for the last six months, but they’ve been advising me and wooing me over since June of 2015.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

In a field where it can be $100 per click, it’s hard to define success. That said, Marketing by Data is successful compared to all my other experiences. My cost per click has gone down pretty much as far as I think it can. That’s the thing with pay-per-click: it’s disconcerting how expensive it can get. But in terms of things I can easily quantify, my quality score has gone up and my cost per click has gone down. They’ve cleaned up my campaigns from a mess of keywords and misspelled keywords, and I’m very happy with that. The nature of this niche is that it’s so expensive, but that’s not really in Jason’s control.

What did you find most impressive about Marketing by Data?

Their response time is always pretty quick. And one thing I do appreciate is that there’s no over-promising. They tell you what it is: there’s no over-salesmanship or anything.

Are there any areas Marketing by Data could improve?

Nothing comes to mind. It’s kind of out of sight, out of mind: now that it works, I don’t really think about it that much. I can’t think of anything that could be improved.

I have a graphic design company that does mostly brand development, packaging, logo design, and websites. We work with small- to medium-sized companies and individuals, but our focus is really in the consumer goods packaging area. I’m the CEO and founder.

What challenge were you trying to address with Marketing by Data?

When I started working with Jason I had nobody doing my search engine optimization, and he recommended I start doing that to gain more clients. Once we started, just like he promised, I actually have more clients coming in. I get a lot more calls, which was the goal. The goal was to get more incoming calls for package design, brand development, and logo development. That’s the overall goal: to get more revenue via the website.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The only marketing I’m doing is with Jason. He’s doing all my SEO. I’m not quite sure about the specifics of what he’s working on. I know I pay for Google AdWords, but I’m not really familiar with SEO terms.

How did you come to work with Marketing by Data?

I met Jason at a networking event. I’d been thinking about looking for someone at the time, so it kind of worked out really well. We started talking and he was just very nice. He helped me with a lot of things to get started. I was putting together my website and he gave me pointers and guidelines, and asked him if he would do my SEO once the site was live. So for the first months he was just helping me out because he’s a nice guy, and then he said he’d start doing SEO whenever I was ready. That’s when he sent me a statement of work.

How much have you invested with Marketing by Data?

I pay him a monthly rate, and I don’t think he’d prefer me to share that publicly.

What is the status of this engagement?

It is ongoing. He started doing my SEO in March 2016, so about a year ago.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

I get some referrals and I do some networking, but he’s the main source of business coming in, the SEO that he’s doing. About 80-85% of my clients come in through Google search now. He sends me a detailed report every Monday morning showing what happened on the site, how many organic and natural searches and how many pay-per-click, all those things. It’s a nice little report that gives me a good picture of what’s going on.

How did Marketing by Data perform from a project management standpoint?

The process was really easy. He would sit down to meet before we signed anything. He spent a bunch of hours with me. I asked a bunch of questions and he just kept answering them.

What did you find most impressive about Marketing by Data?

I’m very happy with what he’s doing. He’s also really available. If I have a question, I send him an email and he responds within the day if not the hour. He’s a very friendly person. He’s easy to talk to. He understands my needs. If I have any concerns or questions I just ask him and he responds. I always recommend him to other people who need website help. He’s really easy-going; there’s never any drama or any kind of hassle.

Are there any areas Marketing by Data could improve?

I don’t think there is anything I think he could be doing better. He’s already doing so great.

What tips or recommendations could you share that might increase the likelihood of success with Marketing by Data?

I always tell people to tell him exactly what you need and he’ll help you out.
