What challenge were you trying to address with Maji Hill?

We needed help improving our water reliability and waste management systems at a residential estate in Nairobi.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Maji Hill handled the entire scope of our residential waste management project from start to finish. Their team conducted initial household waste audits to understand the volume and types of waste being generated. They then provided and installed composting bins for organic waste, followed by hands-on training sessions to teach residents effective composting techniques. They also implemented a waste segregation system and carried out regular monitoring to ensure compliance and progress. A key part of their work involved educating the community on the environmental and agricultural benefits of composting. Overall, their deliverables included the setup of composting infrastructure, resident training, continuous support, and measurable reductions in organic waste.

I was specifically looking for a reliable water and sanitation service provider in Nairobi, and Maji Hill stood out because of their clear service offerings and strong local reputation. Their website was informative, and I appreciated the quick response when I reached out for more details. I chose Maji Hill because they offered a great balance of professionalism, affordability, and technical expertise. Compared to other providers I considered, they were more responsive, transparent with pricing, and had a broader range of services, including smart water monitoring, which really aligned with our sustainability goals. RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We saw several clear, measurable outcomes from our project with Maji Hill. First, we diverted over 2,000 kilograms of organic waste from landfills within the first month of implementation. This significantly reduced the volume of waste being collected and helped lower disposal costs. Secondly, more than 50 households were successfully trained and adopted composting practices, with many continuing independently after the project ended. We also observed a 30% reduction in waste-related complaints in the estate, which indicated better waste handling and hygiene. Overall, the project delivered both environmental impact and community behavior change, which were key indicators of its success.

One of the main challenges we faced was getting full community buy-in for the composting initiative. Initially, there was some resistance and a lack of awareness around waste segregation and the benefits of composting.

Maji Hill handled this very effectively by organizing targeted sensitization sessions and providing practical demonstrations to show how simple and beneficial composting could be. They also made follow-up visits to support households and answer questions, which really helped increase participation. Their proactive communication and hands-on approach played a big role in overcoming skepticism and ensuring the project’s success. All deliverables were thorough, accurate, and aligned perfectly with our goals. The team’s attention to detail and hands-on approach truly stood out.

How did Maji Hill perform from a project management standpoint?

Maji Hill’s project management was highly effective. They communicated clearly from the start, set realistic timelines, and delivered all phases of the project on schedule. Their team was organized, proactive, and consistently responsive to our needs, whether it was adjusting the training schedule, providing extra compost bins, or following up on resident feedback. They also provided regular progress updates, which kept everyone informed and involved. Overall, their ability to manage logistics while staying flexible made the entire experience smooth and efficient.

Maji Hill’s overall performance was excellent. They delivered the project on time, within budget, and with a high level of professionalism. The team was knowledgeable, responsive, and very hands-on throughout the entire process. They communicated clearly, followed through on every commitment, and went the extra mile to ensure the community understood and embraced the composting initiative.

Their ability to combine technical expertise with community engagement really stood out. We were very satisfied with the results and would definitely work with them again on future sustainability projects. Our primary form of communication was through Microsoft Teams. Their efficient project management ensured a smooth, timely delivery. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

What impressed me most about working with Maji Hill was their deep commitment to both technical excellence and community engagement. They didn’t just deliver a service; they took time to educate, involve, and empower the residents every step of the way. Their use of smart water and waste monitoring tools, combined with a very human-centered approach, really set them apart. They were also incredibly responsive and solution-oriented, always ready to adapt when challenges came up. It felt like they genuinely cared about the long-term success of the project, not just ticking boxes. Their professionalism, technical expertise, and commitment to sustainability made the project a success from start to finish.

Are there any areas they could improve?

If I had to point out one area for improvement, it would be the earlier involvement of community representatives during the planning phase. While Maji Hill did a great job with training and engagement, involving local leaders or opinion shapers from the start could have helped accelerate buy-in and reduce initial resistance. That said, they were very receptive to feedback and adjusted their approach quickly once this was raised. Their willingness to listen and improve was definitely appreciated.
