Could you please provide a brief description of your company?
Our company is a wholesale book distributor. We’re a "not open to the public" online book and media supplier to very large corporations. We typically serve Fortune 1000 companies and the U.S. government: state, local, federal, school districts, and police departments.
What is your position within the company?
I’m the founder.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What was your main business goal for undertaking the project with Lone Star Internet?
We’ve been with Lone Star Internet for roughly 15 years, and through two separate renditions of our website. We’ve just completed the majority of the most recent rendition this year. We have to have an online presence because most of our customers are ordering through the Web, although we receive some orders via fax, email, and traditional mail. Government and some corporation orders come through separate portals, but they all typically originate from our website. The ability to customize the site for particular clients is of critical importance.
SOLUTION
Why did you choose to work with Lone Star Internet?
We originally had a Web development company in New York, but we’re down here in Texas. We weren’t comfortable, although they did a good job for being a startup. In the beginning, we didn’t have a lot of money. As we started to grow, we became increasingly uncomfortable with the geographic difference, even though it isn’t supposed to matter. We began searching in Austin and narrowed our list down to two companies. I don’t recall the company that we rejected now, but Ken [Biggs, Lone Star Internet’s president] appeared more professional to us. Ken's ability to speak English as well as technical vernacular was very helpful. He’s quite easy to converse with. You can tell Ken what you want in plain terms, and he can translate that into tech speak. He will give you feedback as to how he feels he can best accomplish the mission, and he always gave us a lot of tips regarding how we could control costs from his end. For example, we could give the most detailed description of all the features that we’re looking for, as well as the layout that we desired. His company will craft the design, colors, and offer advice about the navigation.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
We enjoy a good working relationship. That was our initial goal, and we certainly achieved that. He was also able to customize the initial site that we had. He squeezed the most out of it; kept augmenting it and building it until it became a bit of a hairball. At some point, he decided that it would be best to work in a more modern language for the Web, so he created a new website that works better than ever.
