What was the scope of their involvement?

Lexunit has created mock-ups and designs for our website. We’ve gone through review rounds and got deep into the process, doing a bit of rework and redesigns. For our requirements, we want the website to be a bit more black and white, which is a huge change from what we initially have. They’ve implemented a bunch of amendments and extra work for that. 

In terms of features, they’ve embedded videos on the website and incorporated animations from our graphic designer in the things they’ve completed. 

Moreover, Lexunit has optimized our backend in a way that we can drop new content whenever we need. They’ve integrated the website with the platform we use for job posting. This means that every time we post a new job, it’s automatically loaded into the website — that’s one of the special features we’ve requested. We’ve asked them to do SEO tasks for us, too.

My main point of contact is David (Founder & Strategy Adviser). He’s the sole representative that I’ve interfaced with, but I’m sure other teammates work alongside him.

We heard good things about Lexunit from people we know. Our team received strong recommendations about them, so we decided to engage them.

The design project cost is around $20,000; we also compensate them for all the additional work they do when updating our website. 

What is the status of this engagement?

Our engagement started in May 2023, and it’s ongoing. For context, we wrapped the initial website design in July 2023, but we still go back to them with necessary updates and changes. As a result, we’re still working together.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The final product is professional-looking and loads quickly. Everything has come out better than expected. For numbers, we’ve gained around 50,000 unique visitors per month, and we have five new business leads per week via the contact form on the website. The website is a huge resource for us, and Lexunit’s work is extremely important for our day-to-day business. 

How did Lexunit perform from a project management standpoint?

Lexunit has been easy to work and communicate with; they’re even willing to work late nights for us to cater to all of our needs. Moreover, it’s great that David communicates our needs with the rest of the team so we don’t need to have any more interactions. The engagement is simple for us since we only need to speak with one person. 

On top of that, their team is extremely responsive and gets things done right away. Everything they do is 100% tip-top — the best in the business. I can’t imagine anyone doing a better job than them. They get things done ahead of schedule, and they sometimes have to wait for us to give feedback. In other words, everything is extremely quick with Lexunit. 

For tools, we normally use emails, and David gets on video calls with us to address issues right away.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their customer service is impressive. I can get on the phone with the leader of their company and have him address my issues. The fact that I can always talk to someone to implement necessary changes immediately is fantastic and invaluable. The speed at which they get things done is also a highlight of our engagement.

No, there aren’t any. They’re absolutely perfect, and I’ll change nothing about the way they work.

Do it. Engage Lexunit because they’re the best. Just be ready and have a clear idea of what you want. The team is highly results-oriented, and they’re going to turn things around and start working right away — you get the most value when you know exactly what you want.

We hired LexUnit to assist with creating one of the most comprehensive evidence maps of benefits provided by natural climate solutions, drawing from scientific (i.e. peer-reviewed) literature.

Our project involved:

1. Querying Data;
2. Generating a Relevance Classifier;
3. Geolocating Articles;
4. Determining categories of NCS and Co-Benefits;
5. Creating a Data Pipeline and Containerization;
6. Documenting all steps; and
7. Data Analysis and Figure Generation.

These steps produced the following products: An Elastic Database with over 2M relevant articles and 100 variables generated from the information those articles contained, a data pipeline and container with a user interface to re-run all project code and generate products, and a set of data visualizations that describe and summarize the database.

LexUnit employed a number of different techniques to evaluate the content of research paper abstracts and develop the Elastic Database. This included the use of language models, cluster algorithms, identifying every organism mentioned in millions of paper abstracts, and assessing the best way to determine different elements of Natural Climate Solution Implementation such as cost.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

LexUnit successfully acquired over 2M paper titles and abstracts using a set of search criteria we developed and research databases to which we had access. The team then ran a set of relavance as well as clustering algorithms to implement unsupervised as well as supervised classification of relevant papers and paper topics (clusters), respectively.

They extracted critical information from paper abstracts (e.g. geolocation, biodiversity flags, cost information, etc.) and generated an Elastic Database for use in our project. Finally, LexUnit provided a user interface to rerun their code as well as a set of data visualizations to help summarize and describe the data they collected.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The workflow between our teams was very effective. At weekly meetings, LexUnit showed us updates and we discussed progress as well as barriers. Between these meetings, we discussed current objectives using Slack. Lexunit was incredibly responsive to our needs and interests.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

This team was able to apply deep experience working with other partners to the set of unique research objectives we had. Further, they did so in an extremely professional and pleasant manner.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

We have no suggestions for improvement.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m a professor at a university in the US, doing research in conservation science, also known as conservation biology. I also collaborate with large and small environmental nonprofit organizations.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Lexunit?

I hired Lexunit to refactor terabytes of Twitter data I had collected to find out how people talked about environmental issues on that platform. I originally did some analysis of this data, but doing large-scale data analysis wasn’t possible for me, and I wasn’t progressing on my research.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The data I had collected from Twitter was returned as JSON format files, so Lexunit successfully helped me process and clean up that JSON data, refactoring it into a much more performant and modern database structure. Additionally, they refactored data products that I had created from the original JSON files. For instance, I had done user-by-user text analyses and run a sentiment model, but the outputs had many different formats and were stored in non-performant structures like TSV (tab-separated values) or TXT files.

In addition to refactoring the data, Lexunit created an edge list to help me perform social network analysis. That part of the project involved major open-ended research. My dataset came from over a million distinct users. Going through all of those users to create an edge list was computationally infeasible, at least with my resources. However, Lexunit came up with a very elegant solution, developing a novel software piece to define and create a social network edge list of all the pairwise interactions that met a relevant threshold.

For both parts of the project, the data refactoring and the social network analysis, Lexunit helped me perform visualizations such as data rates distribution histograms and scatterplots. Specifically for the social network part of the project, they identified different graph visualization algorithms. Then, they helped me run tests to compare them and find the best way to process the edge list and create a social network graph.

What is the team composition?

I worked with three people from Lexunit. My main point of contact was the project manager, and I also worked with a senior developer and a junior developer.

How did you come to work with Lexunit?

Lexunit was referred to me by a colleague of mine who had worked with them before. They had worked together on a similar project to mine, and my colleague had a very positive experience.

I also looked at and reached out to other firms, but I wasn’t very impressed with the other competitors. Those other companies didn’t seem as independent and reliable as Lexunit, and I didn’t know if I could trust them to be careful and do due diligence. Lexunit understood that everything they needed to do had to be very well justified, meeting the rigorous criteria of scientific research.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around $15,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from December 2021–March 2022.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Lexunit did a big technical lift to enable me to do a large-scale analysis of the Twitter data I was interested in. They managed to achieve 80%–90% compression of the data, exponentially accelerating my data-processing and data-ingestion time. The result is now something that I can build on to have a research paper that I could publish.

I also really appreciated that their team thought in a very scientific and rigorous way. As a researcher, I didn’t look for a fast product; I wanted a good product that I could share with the scientific community and proudly use for my research work. Thus, I had a really high standard for what I was looking for, and they met that expectation by doing an excellent job on software development.

How did Lexunit perform from a project management standpoint?

Lexunit worked very fast, and they met the timeline they initially estimated perfectly. They executed the project very smoothly and met every deadline. Their team was very professional, and they did an excellent job communicating with me — I really enjoyed interacting with them. We had weekly Zoom calls at times that were convenient to me, which was very generous of them because we were a few time zones apart. Additionally, we communicated via Slack, and we had a shared version-control repository on GitLab.

What did you find most impressive about them?

In the academic space, we prize researchers who can act very independently. Lexunit was very professional and intellectually independent, which was impressive. They were able to operate at the highest level of rigor with speed and accuracy, and they demonstrated to be excellent technologists. Additionally, they introduced me to modern computing frameworks for using distributed computing packages — that aspect really made them stand out.

While constructing the edge list for the social network analysis, they acted very independently because my guidelines were extremely vague, and I didn’t know what was possible. That part of their service felt like a consulting type of expertise, which was great.

Finally, Lexunit’s flexible approach and due diligence were outstanding. They didn’t offer a unique solution. Instead, they were able to find the best options relevant to our challenges to find the best solution.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I really enjoyed working with Lexunit, and they exceeded my expectations. In fact, I’ve been recommending them to other colleagues.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have a clear scoping document and be as engaging as possible to establish an awesome partnership. Still, they can do a fantastic job if you don’t have a clear scope.

We hired Lexunit to help us develop software for our company. We modeled the circuit breaker interruptions and asked for the help of Lexunit to solve specific problems.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We wanted to accelerate our calculation process since the human-machine interface and the overall program weren’t functioning the way we intended.

Lexunit implemented a solution where the database of the input of our finite element program could be modified in a separate program far more quickly than the original platform. They used LibreCAD for the development, a free software for Linux systems.

We defined every single aspect of the scope and identified the project in milestones according to a schedule. However, we were only able to finish the first three stages, as our team had left the company.

I'm the CTO and Co-Founder. We are newly formed startup that is creating an AI/ML platform to provide personalized coaching over video calls. Our patent-pending technology analyzes the user's body language and provides them real-time feedback as well as asynchronous learning exercises.

Due to the timeliness of our product and interest from investors, we had to go-to-market quicker than we could with our internal dev team. We were introduced to LexUnit by a trusted partner here in Boston. They came with high praises for their expertise in cloud architecture and AI.

We had very specific requirements and goals for LexUnit to help with our cloud deployment and overall cloud architecture, plus developing a framework for our microservices and building custom code around it. Our goals were to complete this work in about a month and have a product deployed to the cloud.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

LexUnit was referred to us by a trusted partner with high accolades. We spoke to the LexUnit CEO, Endre, as well as their strategic project manager, David. Both were well spoken, experienced, and focused on the long-term partnership with us. We decided to move ahead with them because they had significant industry experience, were recommended by another local firm, and were focused on partnering, not just one-and-done.

The cloud architecture is mostly using AWS services, as well as Terraform for configurations and deployment. They are very well versed in cloud architecture, and helped us determine the right cloud services to use, build cost calculators, and educated us as needed. They are strong in many languages, but primarily we were using Python and Javascript.

How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

There were 4 developers in different capacities over the course of our work. We had a main developer (who is a rockstar) and LexUnit brought in their own experts as needed. For example, their cloud expert helped with the deployment and Terraform work. We had a manager/strategic partner who we'd meet with twice a week to discuss the project.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We are in the final stages of bug fixing currently and getting ready to deploy everything to the cloud. Our project was complex and involved many moving pieces.

We have been thrilled with the outcome and plan on continuing forward with LexUnit for future projects. I have been using "offshore" developers for over 20 years and LexUnit is up there with the best of them. They're not only focused on billable hours, rather on earning our trust and fostering a long-term partnership.

The project management was great. We met twice a week and were able to speak directly to the developer as needed. We communicated over Slack and google video chats.

We had access to both the project manager and the developer. And as previously stated, they are working hard to satisfy us and build the best possible software. Their code is well written, using the latest and greatest technology. They also created outstanding documentation for how to set up the application.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

I can not think of anything significant for this. Perhaps more in-line documentation in the code, although based on the cadence of our project and the budget it was known this would not be too detailed.
