About the client

Selco is a manufacturer of innovative thermal management products. They serve equipment-manufacturing and end-user companies in a variety of industries where precision and cost are key: HVAC, food service, medical, telecommunication, appliances, process controls, and industrial instrumentation. 

The challenge

Our client’s goal was to turn a manual

thermostat into a wireless-controlled IoT device. Together with Selco, we designed a phased development approach that required integrating a BLE module into the thermostat PCB and developing mobile apps for iOS and Android. 

Delivered value

A fully connected industrial thermostat that users can configure and control remotely via Selco mobile apps available for both iOS and Android.

The challenge

Our client is one of the leading agricultural corporations in Ukraine, who specialize in full-cycle meat product manufacturing. 

To improve production safety, our client needed an automated system for employee hand hygiene control. We came up with an idea to create a computer vision enabled device that analyzes the quality of hand disinfection.

We designed and developed a proof of concept device that leverages computer vision to analyse how well an employee has covered their hands with UV-reactive hand sanitizer.

The device outputs coverage quality in percent, determining whether the employee’s hands are sterilized enough to enter the safety area.

The challenge

Our client was looking for a mobile app to automate quality control of Doppel devices on the production line. This mobile solution had to be able to test vital features

which have the most impact on device user experience: Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity and control gesture responsivity, as well as validate software update integrity.

The client was looking for a technical

partner who can deliver a mass-production-compatible MVP prototype based on their industrial product design. The scope of work would require mechanical design, electrical engineering, firmware and web/cloud development, and further focusing on end-user mobile apps.

Delivered value

Lemberg delivered a 3D-printed and fully assembled device prototype. This prototype helped demonstrate the client's idea to its customers and investors, and convince them to support this project. All the design files along with a prototype can be further handed over to a mass-production vendor.

Monda had been running their website on WordPress, but the

platform had stopped being flexible enough to satisfy their editorial team’s growing needs.

They wanted to migrate to a more convenient content management system (CMS). In particular, they wanted to extend their basic publishing functionality, add flexible ad management tools, and build a smart content recommendation system powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms.

This chatbot's main goal was to suggest a possible health diagnosis right at the moment when a person feels uncomfortable instead of spending time browsing the web, looking for a doctor and scheduling appointments.

The challenge

The product owner came to us with a first revision of their wearable camera PCB, which had some issues. The Lemberg team was happy to

brainstorm together with the client on the best lean development approach as well as designing the whole solution architecture from scratch, which would include firmware, apps and cloud.

Delivered value

Our first project was to develop firmware that would run on the first pre-crowdfunding Benjamin Button prototypes as well as a web app to control and configure the camera. We understood the importance of this milestone because this prototype experience would define how likely the early adopters were to buy this product in the future.

The first release included the following features: video recording in 720p and storing the file on an SD card, ability to download stored video via USB or Wi-Fi connection (web browser), control of exposure settings, indoor/outdoor video modes, hardware reset and video start/stop recording via mobile phone, and LED indicator lights behavior to visualize device states like fully charged, low battery, low memory, recording on.

HorseAnalytics is a German early stage startup with seed funding. The vision of HorseAnalytics is to accompany horses at all times and to improve their well-being and their health by using mobile apps, sensors and integrated data analysis.

The challenge

The product owner came to us with an idea to monitor horse activity 24/7 including exercise, sleep and

behavior and to translate all of this into meaningful data for the user.

We realized that the cornerstone of this project would be a Machine Learning algorithm that detects various horse activities. With this in mind, we designed the proper solution architecture and suggested a plan of action that will help ensure a successful delivery.

Delivered value

The client expected us to take a major responsibility for delivering the whole end-to-end technical solution, which also included business analysis, architecture design, mobile apps and cloud development, as well as building the information model, collection and processing of raw data, and neural network training.

After one year, when the system was ready and we released our first apps, we were happy to see all the positive feedback that the real users have been sharing with the HorseAnalytics team.

Parrot specializes in technologies involving voice recognition and signal processing for embedded products and drones. AR.Drone is a quadcopter with cameras relaying flying experience in real time to a mobile device.

The challenge

Originally, Parrot offered to control their drones only with an iOS application developed in-house. The project was

successful, so the company decided to launch an app for Android as well. The goal was to provide Android users with the same functionality and deliver app updates to them as soon as possible. 

The application was supposed to include a cross-platform native library, so the company was looking for partners who could help them with Android NDK, which is very different from the more common Android SDK. Using the native library made the development process much more complicated and error-prone and, thus, required higher code quality. 

Delivered value

Lemberg built and delivered the Android official application, which was deployed to Google Play. AR.Drone users have downloaded the app more than 1m times already.

Dimpact is a Dutch nonprofit organization aiming to help municipalities cut costs and be more organized and efficient through collaboration when it comes to various IT needs.

The challenge

Dimpact developed WIM 1.0 Drupal distro a while ago. Over time, requirements were significantly expanded, and the existing platform was not able to keep up with

them. 

Thus, our goal was to clean up existing platform, add missing features, make it future-proof, and migrate web projects of 16 municipalities (resulting in ~30 separate websites) to the new version.

With company growth, the number of record-keeping spreadsheets was increasing, and, once we reached the 100-employees mark, it became a real problem and caused a bottleneck for further growth.

Our goal was to have real-time analytics for better decision-making and automation of key business processes.

Integrations with

third-party project management and time tracking tools allowed us to keep all important data reports in a single repository. Automation of key business processes is saving around 20% of total time spent on management. With HUB, we can scale our company further, make appropriate decisions earlier and saving resources spent on business operations.

The Wightlink site was built on the N2CMS engine. The site's content is entirely manageble through the back end, which can be accessed by the client over the web.

Firmware development for the BLE module (Nordic nRF5), and UI/UX design and development for iOS and Android apps.

What was the team composition?

Between BLE firmware, iOS, Android, and QA development teams, plus the product manager, it was around 15 team members. My primary interaction was with the product manager that will coordinate the efforts.

Able to release our first iOS and Android app, and starting to get new opportunities as customers became aware of the support of BLE for other projects.

Excellent, very proactive. We would have a weekly meeting to review all open items, timeline, and concerns.

Lemberg Solutions developed an application to be used for Quality Control testing on our production lines. The application needed to be able to test performance remotely and provide logs of test results.

We wanted to be able to reliably test products on the assembly line, whilst accurately tracking progress across several product runs.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We met Lemberg Solutions at an industry event and were impressed with their experience working with connected hardware projects and knowledge of the consumer market. We settled on using them after speaking with several of their previous clients to gain a better understanding of their working processes.

Describe the project in detail.

The project was to develop an Android application which could ;

  • Connect to our product over Bluetooth and perform basic tests (controls)
  • Monitor test outcomes on a production line
  • Log the test results for further analysis (in a usable format).

We provided product samples, technical documentation, app flow layout, and assets. We also detailed acceptable outcomes for tests. The team at Lemberg Solutions provided insights where possible and outstanding support from a technical and testing perspective.

What was the team composition?

We worked with a project manager and an Android developer primarily. We also had support from a QA Engineer which validated all builds before they were sent to us, identifying any issues they could not fix.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We have not yet fully rolled out the app that Lemberg Solutions built for us as we are still running internal trials on other aspects of the production line. However in our tests so far the app seems to have significantly reduced the testing time per device, allows for more reliable testing and provides valuable testing data.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The workflow with Lemberg Solutions was very well implemented and managed. The project manager was very responsive and ensured that communications were maintained continuously. We had weekly calls, supported by communication via email or Slack depending on the nature of the discussion.

The PM were proactive in planning the project and communicating timelines, issues and potential to miss deadlines which helped mitigate risks that could have arisen due to language barriers. Direct access to the developer also made the project more straightforward as it lowered the risks of miscommunication.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

We were very impressed by the knowledge and expertise Lemberg Solutions had with Bluetooth technology and communications.They actively looked to understand the purpose of the app and to suggest changes. They were a pleasure to work with overall.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Things could always go faster or smoother, in particular when unexpected problems arise, however overall the experience with Lemberg Solutions was very positive.

We had offers from several companies, so the decision took a few months. We got to know Lemberg Solutions better by understanding their process and past projects. Their offer and price were both great.

At the beginning, we defined all the criteria our device should have. We built a long list so their reponsibilities were clear. They did the project planning and management, wrote a specification book, and developed, sourced, and tested the software. They completed the mechanical and electrical engineering alongside a partner.

The project team had about 10 people, including specialists. A project manager was our direct contact. The team changed depending on the task.

We've started the company a year and a half ago. We are based out of the Netherlands and I recently moved to North Carolina. We've done a few apps and we've used Lemberg on all of them.

I’m the founder of the company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with Lemberg Solutions?

There was an article in Reuters about featuring the ten most promising companies involved in wearable technology for the iPhone. Lemberg was one of them. I discussed going into the iPhone wearable market with one of my partners, and trying something with Lemberg. From the beginning, working with them was fantastic. Their turnaround time, from idea to actually having a product is phenomenal. In less than a week, they will have wireframes for us.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement.

They build iPhone-specific apps for us. They do everything from development to implementation to quality testing and bug resolution. At the moment, there are five local people in our team and we work with seven or eight from Lemberg. There is a dedicated account manager for us. I'm not familiar with the technology they use other than iOS.

How did you come to work with Lemberg Solutions?

We initially worked with a family member in South Africa. He became unavailable, and we had unmet deadlines. He recommended Lemberg to us. We met them at Apps World, in Berlin. They liked what we were doing and wanted to be associated with us. They offered to do beta testing and anything else we wanted.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

We have spent under $20.000 in total.

What is the status of this engagement?

We've given them another app to develop, which will be launched in January [2016], called 21.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

We don't have a big budget for marketing and rely on word of mouth for the most part. So far, people are praising the simplicity and functionality of the app. The feedback from the app store has also been positive. We did have some problems with crashes, but it only took about three days to get them fixed.

How did Lemberg Solutions perform from a project management standpoint?

I hand-draw all of the ideas I pass on to them, and they ask the right questions. They know that we're novices in the area, but also that our ideas are fantastic. One member of our board is very finicky and if she dislikes a certain color, the next day, the colors will be changed. Lemberg is very flexible with us, though.

We don't use elaboration tools for project management. Instead, we use email, Skype, even Facebook for communicating and exchanging documentation. What I like about our relationship with them is that, ultimately, we've become friends and now we work very well together.

What distinguishes Lemberg Solutions from other providers?

When I first met them, I noticed that, compared to bigger companies, they had a slightly unprofessional look. They looked too homely to be doing these things, but if you’d look at their Twitter feed and their Drupal involvement, you’d see that they get so excited about a process or project, that it becomes contagious.

Is there anything Lemberg Solutions could have improved or done differently?

Sometimes, we do get lost in translation. English is not my first language either, so I will tend to over-explain things and talk longer. Professionally, though, everything comes together.

BACKGROUND

We're a high-end branding and design strategy company based in New York City. As the owner and creative director of the company, we are always looking for reliable development partners for projects large and small.

The opportunity with the kiosk app design was to create something that can be used in large and small gatherings and had just enough interactivity to draw people in without being a long-time proposition. The service provider was selected from a short list of options we found online and they went to great lengths to prove their value and capabilities, which was greatly appreciated.

Lemberg handled all development and programming work and really understood every facet of the process, which made it easier for us to do our job and not worry that something would not be handled well. During the course of six months, Lemberg stayed the course of the project and didn't flinch with changes and refinements by the client, [or by us, the agency]. They simply responded to everything in a very professional manner.

The app works great and everyone is happy. That's the best outcome from the project, also the cost and client relations that Lemberg provided were excellent.
