Ticket control solution Image

Ticket control solution

Vector Controls is a company that provides services of ticket and travel document control in public transport. It also vindicates accounts receivable from imposed additional charges. The company asked us to take over the development and deploying of an existing Android app, when the previous provider failed in doing so.

The main goal of the project was to improve and finish the abandoned application. This

included, first of all, fixing malfunctioning elements, implementing missing functionalities, general optimization of the app performance and improvement of user comfort. After initial code review it turned out that application is rather chaotic and had many unfinished modules. First version of the app was built using Xamarin, but as this technology wasn’t consistent with the business case (the client wanted only one platform – Android) the project was transitioned to native technology.

The most important functionality shortcomings came down to issues with communication between the application and external systems: a back-office fee registration and vindication system and, connected via Bluetooth, external thermal printers. Our developers successfully integrated application with the aforementioned back-end system. Finished application gave our client an important competitive advantage.

Industrial light control system Image

Industrial light control system

An industrial lighting manufacturer, NowaLed ILL, came to us with a project of an application that would facilitate communication with a light control system. It is worth to mention that NowaLed is on the FT 1000 list (the list of Europe’s fastest-growing companies by Financial Times).

The main goal of the project was to create an application with a more user friendly interface than the competitive solutions, so

even a person without specialized training could use it.

During the project we’ve encountered a series of challenges regarding the transmission of documentation in the controller. Thanks to our expert knowledge, all problematic aspects were repaired within a few hours. After our intervention, the author’s controller was able to read all documentation again without problems.

Online bibliographical platform for academic usage Image

Online bibliographical platform for academic usage

The Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences approached ImpiCode with the task of creating an advanced tool for storing, organising and updating bibliographical data about Polish writers and literary scholars.

We developed an online platform designed to fit the complexity of modeled data, implemented workflows between different users and imported data from sources supplied by the

client.

One of the aforementioned sources is an online lexicon, from which we downloaded data using web scraping tools. The data was then parsed, organised, split into atomized structures, and imported to the system database.

One of the biggest challenges in this project was parsing second supplied data source. We were given scans of a 10-volume lexicon in PDF with the text layer obtained using OCR software and a list of outdated entries in QRT format (which is a format used by a Polish text editor QR Tekst from the nineties). Because of many OCR inaccuracies, we had to extract text from QRT and merge it with its PDF version using custom merge rules drawn up by analyzing QRT/PDF differences.

After deployment, the platform now aides the Institute’s team in revising and updating data by providing functionalities like tracking changes, text markup, WYSIWYG editor, and tools for reorganizing stored structures.

The responsive and patient team provided actionable suggestions. Management and executives were communicative and readily available.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

    BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m a researcher at the Institute of Literary Research in the Polish Academy of Sciences. I work in the Department of Contemporary Literature Documentation. I am also the author and co-author of a few lexicons and bibliographies that were published by the institute.

    OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with ImpiCode?

We needed to develop and build a virtual backend database for our descriptive bibliographies and compendiums in a single digital format.

    SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?
They created an entire customized database on our behalf.

    What is their team composition?
At any moment, there were 1–3 people on the team, including a project manager.

How did you come to work with ImpiCode? How did you find them?
We were recommended to them by one of our colleagues from the University of Warsaw’s IT department.

How much have you invested with them?
My company spent about 120,000 Polish złoty (approximately $29,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

    It is completed.

    RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They made things much easier for us by creating a tool for the whole department to utilize. The tool allows us to gather materials and data in one place instead of searching multiple systems with keywords, which was very time-consuming.

How did ImpiCode perform from a project management standpoint?

They stayed within the original budget. The project was not completed in the original timeframe because the scope changed as the project progressed; we, the clients, realized that there was more we needed done than we originally anticipated. Our project manager was extremely patient with all of our questions and changes. She spoke with us in layman’s terms instead of technical jargon, which we, coming from a humanities background, deeply appreciated. In all, we were very satisfied with the project manager and how the project was managed.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Asia (Project Manager) was exceptional, patient, and professional. Even when we repeatedly asked the same questions, she was calm and patient. She was flexible when we wanted to make changes — or reverse changes we had previously requested — and it was evident that she was knowledgeable and competent. We completely trusted her to manage the project well.

As a team, they communicated well with us, and they were clear when communicating a change or suggestion. One advantage of working with them is that they are a smaller company instead of a large corporation, so we had the opportunity to communicate directly with management and executives. Moreover, one of the executives even oversaw our project and gave valuable input and suggestions we hadn’t thought of.

Another thing that impressed us was that they, as a company, were available for our calls and questions at any time. We never had to wait for a call-back or for a change to be made because they were always at the ready to make an adjustment.

Are there any areas they could improve?

At this time, I don’t have any suggestions or complaints.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Even if you have very unique specifications, needs, and an idea for how long you think the project should take, you should always add a few months onto your timeline expectations. If you think that it will take one year to complete the project, expect it to take 16 months, as you don’t know what ideas you, as the customer, might think of in the middle of the project or what changes you would like to make. It’s better to give yourself that extra room for improvement and changes.

We didn’t realize how much we could do with the system and, once we realized all of the possibilities, our project didn’t look the same as it did at the beginning. In the end, it was much better and the extra time was worth it, but we should have anticipated the possibility of a longer timeframe in advance.
