Marrying Tech And Finance

The tech world is complicated, flooded with a dizzying number of custom solutions and integrations. The finance world complicated, too, entangled with labyrinthine regulations and constantly shifting markets. Navatar specializes in providing technology solutions for finance companies, which requires expertise that blends the intricacies of both fields. They came to us because their website was outdated and had grown to a point where the amount of information presented overwhelmed users. We figured out how to communicate a complex message without trying to say too much.

Buechel Stone – B2B, Ecommerce

Quality Set In Stone

You might not expect a stone quarry to push the envelope when it comes to its brand. Then again, you might not expect a stone quarry to pioneer industry-leading initiatives in sustainability and product innovation — we’re talking about stone, after all: how much could it be improved? Buechel Stone isn’t just a quarry, though, so their website couldn’t just be a website.

They didn’t ask for a portfolio, so we built them a Brag Book. They don’t run e-commerce, so we built them a cart system that connects customers with trusted dealers. And if you’re looking for help, they didn’t want to just send you to a contact form or a 1-800 number, so we built a resource center where they could share all of their CAD drawings, 3-D prototypes, and installation tutorials so architects, contractors, consultants, and even adventurous DIYers can begin designing their projects.

NBC Sports - Campaign Site

Overview

Premier League soccer is one of the world’s biggest sporting events, with fans tuning in day and night from around the world to catch live games. The TV broadcasts they watch are famously exciting, but the best way to enjoy a game isn’t from a couch; it’s with a rowdy group of fans all cheering on the same club. For NBC’s Premier League coverage, fans were encouraged to find pubs that supported their teams and enjoy the games with a crowd. This experience was first promoted by NBC Sports with the Matchmaker app, which introduced fans to pubs that supported their team.

Feedback summary:

The improved site, lauded internally and externally, has markedly increased order value and conversion rates. HUEMOR corrected issues quickly, including those not of their own making. Their responsiveness and high-quality deliverables are hallmarks of their work.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the VP of e-commerce at Briogeo Hair Care.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with HUEMOR?

We decided to invest in influencer marketing and growing our digital advertising spend. We realized that if we're going to spend all this money, we needed to first make sure our website is compelling and designed to convert visitors into buyers.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

HUEMOR played a big role in redesigning our Shopify Plus website, from the checkout process to the product pages and the homepage. The previous design was subpar. They had to do a lot of work clean up the old messy code structure. They also made recommendations to improve overall speed of the site. In terms of digital marketing, they focused on driving traffic to the website via Google search advertising, social media (Facebook, Instagram) advertising, and influencer partnerships.

What is the team composition?

I worked with a project manager and two developers.

How did you come to work with HUEMOR?

I found them through a Google search for a firm based here in New York. I thought their website was well done, and I liked the work they've done for other clients. I figured they would deliver the same quality for me.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project took place from December 2017–April 2018.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’ve seen an increase in average order value. There’s also been an uptick in the website conversion rate of visitors to buyers. I frequently get compliments from customers on how easy our website is to navigate and to find exactly what they're looking for.

How did HUEMOR perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re always responsive. I'm super busy and only have brief times during the day when I can speak on the phone. It was really helpful to have an account manager who was available on email and would quickly respond to my questions.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their designers were able to take the image I had in my mind for the site and turn it into reality. They did as many revisions as needed to make sure that everything was exactly the way I wanted.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It took them a little while to make sense of the sloppy backend of our site, but that’s not really their fault. In fact, it’s a compliment to them that they were able to work through the code and make it better. I can't say anything negative about them.

Any advice for potential customers?

One of the reasons why our engagement works well is I took the time to do research on best practices for UX design. HUEMOR is definitely more than capable of giving you guidance in that regard, but I do think it helped that I took the time to educate myself.

Huemor was eager to form a cooperative partnership and was very consultative. The team was engaged in the project and rapidly produced high-quality deliverables. Their updated backend infrastructure greatly eased content production.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the marketing manager at AC Lion, an executive recruiting firm that helps with sales, marketing, design, and account management.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Huemor?

We needed to fully redesign a website in order to scale market growth.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Their developers updated and cleaned the code of the backend Wordpress infrastructure. They provided technical off-site SEO resources and designed graphics to develop a marketing brand/ethos which became a part of our digital marketing initiative. Their developers then streamlined functionality by updating UX/IU provided feedback and consultation about technical and business practices.

What is the team composition?

We worked with the CEO, a digital strategist, a team of designers, a project manager, a creative director, and a team of developers.

How did you come to work with Huemor?

We found them through an online search. Their proposal was the most detailed and chosen out of 20 other vendors.Their SEO practices and customization to the project at hand impressed us. They were within our budget range and their pitch really resonated with us.

How much have you invested with them?

We invested around $10,000–$50,000 on this build.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started with them in November 2018 and the engagement is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The site is not yet live, but I am extremely satisfied with the prototypes they have showcased. Their emulated prototypes are exceptional and have the same technical functions in an actual development space. Their updated backend infrastructure allows us to generate landing pages quickly and edit on the fly.

How did Huemor perform from a project management standpoint?

They produce very high-quality deliverables at a fast rate and communicate with us through consistent updates. Their project leads showcased their designs and prototypes with us on InVision throughout the entire design process. Their team is acutely focused on deadlines and delivering results.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Huemor is consultative and very engaged in our project. They are very outgoing and were eager to form a partnership with us. Their experts provide useful feedback on technical and business operations. They are driven to grow and scale the companies they work with.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I would’ve liked them to have more services beyond pure web design.

All projects with HUEMOR are delivered on time and with great quality. They’re capable of creating unique and attractive designs that help clients meet their goals. Other noteworthy attributes are their responsiveness, expertise, and ability to understand the client’s needs.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I'm the co-founder of a company that provides SEO consulting and other search marketing services for clients across a broad spectrum of industries.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire HUEMOR?

We use their services on an ongoing basis whenever our clients need to execute design-related projects. Very often clients rely on us to find a trustworthy design agency and we know they are in good hands with HUEMOR.

What were your goals for this project?

We've used them for a variety of projects which each have their own goals. Often the goals will be as simple as increasing the perception of a brand but can be as complex as extensive UX campaigns. We've tackled them all with HUEMOR and will continue to do so.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

Their work speaks for itself so it wasn't a hard choice to select them. After only a few phone calls, we knew they would be a partner we could trust with our clients.

Describe the project in detail.

Our projects with HUEMOR range in scope from traditional branding to large commerce overhauls. They've taken sites with hilariously bad conversion rates and used a scientific approach to make improvements, which usually leads to a dramatic increase in the client’s bottom line.

What was the team composition?

They have a talented, knowledgeable, and professional team. Each project we do with them gets a slightly different team depending on the niche and needs, but typically, we have an account manager, a designer, a frontend developer, and a backend developer for implementation.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

One project, in particular, involved an overhaul of a WooCommerce site. Within a few months, the site went from a generic template to a unique, eye-catching design. It wasn't just better to look at, it also performed better and the client saw a substantial revenue boost that we can directly attribute to their work.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

They’re fantastic in this regard. They’re responsive, professional, and always on time.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their knowledge is remarkable. Designers are plenty and easy to find but discovering someone who really gets it is hard. Everyone we engage with at HUEMOR has shown the desire to understand each client’s unique challenges and will apply their experience to it.

Are there any areas for improvement?

No. Our projects with HUEMOR run smoothly and on time. Their performance is great.

The team’s insightful consulting elevated the marketing and SEO strategy. Huemor implemented reliable design mechanisms to solicit topical user feedback. This detailed data helps the client clarify and delimit a brand identity. Resources proficiently executed tasks and offered insightful proposals.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I work for Serraview, a workplace optimization platform for Corporate Real Estate professionals.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Huemor?

When I came onboard, our main objective was to scale our brand to the national level. Our existing site was several years out of date. We didn't have any marketing resources on staff and needed additional support.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

This engagement has involved a tremendous amount of work. Huemor provides ongoing web, graphic design, strategic and analytical services. The design team created mockups for our blog pages. They’re executing on the recommendations of another SEO vendor who conducted a full site review.

Correcting our sitemap requires extensive H1 tag updates. Based on UX research, they used heat maps to strategize performance optimization methods. Video recording software consistently monitors the legacy design and development components. This oversight helps the team assess the quality of existing features. Programmers wrote new analytics code to ensure everything is properly tracked.

What is the team composition?

I worked with Mike (Founder, Huemor) during the onboarding stage for our original contract. I'm regularly in contact with Pete (Project Manager, Huemor) and Alex (Digital Strategist, Huemor), our specific development and design resource. Each of them works with a substantial team.

How did you come to work with Huemor?

We originally collaborated on a different company’s major overhaul. They’d been the clear winner of an extensive search. We considered proposals from numerous agencies, but Huemor alone met all our requirements. I knew they were the right fit for this project and didn't even consider an alternative. Based on my past experience, I wanted to bring them in as quickly as possible.

What is the status of this engagement?

We brought Huemor onboard as our new web developer in September 2017. Our partnership began right after our previous vendor’s contract expired.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They just started working on our SEO, and we’re already seeing a strong response from their tactics. Their new online analytics service aggregates specific UX details, including the exact point where users drop off. A brief pop-up survey indicates how our content and messaging is resonating with customers. From a marketing standpoint, this high volume of useful feedback helps us refine our brand.

Huemor’s recommendations have proven extremely effective at taking us to the next level. Their work is extraordinarily professional. I always have faith in their ability to quickly yield high-quality deliverables. The team is great at both taking our directions and providing new recommendations. I feel comfortable entrusting them with important responsibilities.

How did Huemor perform from a project management standpoint?

The project was continually organized and adhered to a strict timeline. Huemor tracks and monitors each facet of the project using the online system Freedcamp. This tool provides transparency on the project’s status. It also helps me schedule requests or queries. We’re in constant communication to plan the next development phase. I've never had a problem getting ahold of them. I can always call them directly or send an email. Their team is truly an extension of my department.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Based on their site, I know they have several concurrent projects. As a medium-sized business, however, we never felt deprioritized. That’s a testament to how well they manage their resources. They dedicate focused attention to each and every one of their clients. I never feel like I'm competing for resources, time, or work. That’s something I really love about Huemor. They promptly answer all my calls, emails, and requests in Freedcamp. It’s a rare opportunity to find an agency of their caliber.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Don't be afraid to speak up. Most people who’ve worked with creative agencies feel reluctant to assert their own marketing ideas. Despite Huemor’s targeted expertise, they’re always open to collaboration. They would never shut down a client’s perspective. They work more as an extension of your team than traditional vendors. Cultivating an open and candid dialogue is a useful strategy for any project.

They produced the design that met all expectations, establishing a smooth and efficient work process. Invested in the project and doing their best to reach all the goals, they earned trust and became a true partner.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the creative director at Quirk Creative, a full-service video agency. We create concepts and manage various types of advertising and video services for our clients.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with HUEMOR?

We didn't have a good website, so we were looking for a company to build a new website for us from scratch.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They came to our office, downloaded everything they needed, and immediately got down to work. They're using a customized WordPress template to build our website. Once the website is built, we want to see how people are responding to it, so it's a very collaborative process.

Initially, we had two main goals: we wanted to make sure we get leads and we were looking to show off our past work on the website. HUEMOR gave us some recommendations in terms of what types of leads we need to target and suggested that we build a website around the work we want to be doing, but not our past projects.

What is the team composition?

We have a development team and a design team. I work directly with three frontend developers and I regularly communicate with their CEO.

How did you come to work with them?

We found them through an online search. We were impressed when we saw their website, so we called them. Within three hours, we had a response from their CEO and the following week we signed the contract.

How much have you invested with them?

The estimated cost is between $25,000–$60,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in February 2018 and it's an ongoing project.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Everything they brought to us on day one of their build was exactly what we wanted. (I’ve worked with a lot of contractors and that doesn't happen often.) We didn't need to go back and forth, which saved us time. Even though we're only midway through the process, they're very far along in terms of the design and the look. They're become a true partner to us, always looking for our best interests and helping us reach our goals.

How did they perform from a project management standpoint?

They're very flexible. We keep an open line of communication and have weekly meetings. After working with them, our company is looking to replicate some of their practices when we service our own clients.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’ve made the process very smooth and easy for us. They give us exactly what we need. We're a smaller agency compared to other companies they're working with, but we were still able to build a relationship with their leadership. I know we're in good hands and everyone in my company feels the same way. They're the right team for us.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

It's important to understand that your website is a really useful tool in your sales funnel. HUEMOR can recommend how to build a website that is right for your industry. Let them open your mind. Prior to working with them, we just saw our website as a pretty design, but they explained to us how we could use it effectively.

The improved website yields a higher conversion rate and facilitated a successful holiday season. Communication and task prioritization are effective, but could still be improved. While all assignments were completed quickly and for a reasonable price, they could collaborate more proactively.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I work for a consumer goods company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with HUEMOR?

We were unhappy with our previous e-commerce agency and weren’t seeing the progression we intended. We needed to bring in another developer to improve our platform’s front- and backend.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We put together a development task list of different functionalities to implement site-wide. HUEMOR’s substantial contributions and Shopify customizations included navigation and search improvements, redesigning our home page, and developing product pages. The frontend design included the addition of tools to increase product knowledge and understanding of consumers visiting the site.

What is the team composition?

We regularly communicate with our account and product managers. We’re not in contact with the development team directly executing the project.

How did you come to work with HUEMOR?

We interviewed numerous vendors, but our Shopify manger recommended HUEMOR as a preferred Shopify partner. In addition to this relevant experience, we also appreciated their analytical approach to development and believed it could greatly benefit our small team. We enjoyed speaking with them and were comfortable with the price point.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent between $50,000–100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project took place from August–November 2017.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

HUEMOR helped take our website to the next level. The increased conversion rate has significantly grown our revenue across the e-commerce channel. The holiday season was exponentially larger than the previous season thanks to their improvements. We look forward to making great strides with the website by working with them in the future.

How did HUEMOR perform from a project management standpoint?

We used several task management tools they recommended to help everyone stay on top of things. However, we struggled with communication and workload management across both teams. We have a million things we want to do, so it’s difficult to prioritize things correctly and allow HUEMOR to do their best work. However, we’re happy with their overall project management approach.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re a great team to work with and have a “yes” attitude. They quickly implemented the tasks we assigned.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could’ve been more proactive in the ideation process.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have a game plan and a clear vision before entering a partnership.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

Media Max Network sells local media solutions.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Huemor?

Our old website was cumbersome; updating it would have been too time intensive. We needed a new one built from scratch with the following features: easy to maintain on our end, an improved UX, and a clearer reflection of our business and Unique Selling Proposition (USP).

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The process started with the founders facilitating ideation and conceptualization. Our initial meeting also included a designer and the project manager. After we approved the wireframes and concepts, their development team built the site on WordPress, making minor adjustments at the end of the project. We filled copy and content into the template.

It’s a B2B site, but we’re considering adding an e-commerce component. Huemor didn’t do SEO or digital marketing; we use another firm for those services.

What is the team composition?

Worked with: the founders, a designer, the project managers, and a developer who they assigned to be responsive to our requests.

How did you come to work with Huemor?

We wanted to a different firm from the one that built our website. We found four or five companies in an online search and saw that Huemor had won awards. We reached out and got referrals, at which point we narrowed our consideration to time and budget flexibility. We went with another highly-rated agency that offered a lower price, but the engagement was a horrible experience. We terminated the contract and hired Huemor instead.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent between $25,000–$50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

Work began in Sept 2017 and ended in January 2018 when the site launched.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Everything went smoothly without a hitch. They were responsive and proactive in finding solutions. We got very positive feedback that the site’s easy to use and navigate; it made sense as a sales tool for a variety of users. Overall, it’s cleaner, fresher, and makes us more competitive.

How did Huemor perform from a project management standpoint?

They stayed on schedule the entire time.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They took the time to understand our business, our competitors, and the existing site, which the original firm didn’t do. Huemor also identified prospective users and built personas around them, which helped determine the journeys and flow. That investment made the entire process a smooth experience.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Not at this point. Currently, we’re identifying where further improvements can be made.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Research different vendors’ costs and turnaround times. In addition, make sure the organizations understand the client, their competition, and opportunities to distinguish them. If the vendor doesn’t do that, the highest quality website wouldn’t make any difference.

HUEMOR’s honest, adaptable team brought a level of confidence during a time of significant internal change. While their QA could use minor improvement, their ability to communicate reliably and think creatively contributed to a positive business relationship.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the vice president of Gilbert, a design/build company specializing in custom trade show exhibits, exhibition programs, architectural interiors (specifically high-end retail environments), and high-end promotional events.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with HUEMOR?

We needed a new website done before rebranding.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Our portfolio section is very powerful and has strong filtering capabilities. I would compare it to the Amazon shopping experience, and we’ve actually had to downgrade the filtering capabilities since we didn’t have enough material for it. It was important for us that our website allowed potential customers to almost create a tailored portfolio for themselves based on their interests.

HUEMOR designed a user-friendly way for anyone to go onto the site and filter down to one or more lines of business, industry verticals, or different sizes and types of projects. We happen to be particular, so we were involved with all animations and subtle transitions which occur on the website. They had intricate functionality down to the pixel level. For example, an arrow would bump up against the boundary of a box twice, exactly.

HUEMOR did an excellent job refining the preciseness of the website and making it incredible across all platforms. The website, in our experience, works flawlessly on screen sizes ranging from a 27-inch super display to a 13-inch laptop, as well as on iPads, iPhones, and Androids.

The entire site was done completely from scratch, and in terms of features, the old site didn’t have anything close to the current one. We had a portfolio broken down by line of business with different pages for each. HUEMOR may have adapted a framework to our platform, but we didn’t have anything similar.

What is the team dynamic?

We’re particular and sometimes indecisive. There are many cooks in our kitchen, so the process was collaborative and involved a lot of communication. This included changes late in the game requested by us, but they never complained or refused our requests. HUEMOR rolled with the punches and watched out for our investment.

There were some extra change orders that broke the original scope, which was fine because we understood this would happen. They respectfully came forward and said they could facilitate the changes, but there would be an additional charge. We weren’t nickel-and-dimed, even when it came down to the last minute after solid development process.

There were many revisions as well as design and stylistic changes. It was a matter of both us and them designing everything. We have an internal team, and if they had a vision for something, they would sometimes create a mockup for HUEMOR to improve upon if needed. In other cases, we had no idea what we wanted so HUEMOR gave us great options to choose from.

I only interacted with around 4 people, including 2 principals, but I know they had more people working on the project. Our contacts were stable throughout the process.

How did you come to work with HUEMOR?

We interviewed them in conjunction with some other companies. Some of our employees were familiar with people from HUEMOR, and they seemed to have the right skills. They were a good fit, so we brought them on to do the project.

HUEMOR presented themselves to be extremely knowledgeable, and knowing they were leaders in their field made us feel comfortable. They were highly skilled and gave great advice, even during the interview process. The creativity was phenomenal, vibrant, and engaging. The price was also right.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent about $40,000 with HUEMOR.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project lasted for about 6 months. HUEMOR quoted us on a 3-month turnaround when we initially started, and I’m confident they would’ve pulled it off if it weren’t for all the changes and delays getting things approved. We started around the end of 2016 or early 2017. HUEMOR has included a period of post-launch assistance and handoffs. If we needed to make any changes or fix any bugs, they would take care of those. So far, we haven’t noticed anything that needs to be changed or fixed, which is a testament to their work. We will also be engaging them for the recommended ongoing support services after this period expires.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We haven’t built that many websites, but from leading our internal IT in terms of web and software development, I can say the process is usually difficult. However, our experience with HUEMOR was exactly the opposite. They provided clear feedback, and outlined benefits as well as drawbacks for each approach. They made recommendations while remaining transparent and accessible to the extent I had hoped for.

How did HUEMOR perform from a project management standpoint?

As a vice president, I was able to call a principle of HUEMOR who is my direct contact even during his expansion to a new office in Philadelphia. He was happy to address my concerns over the course of the project. Projects like this can, and occasionally do, turn into nightmares, but with HUEMOR it was nothing like that.

I usually call people, but my team consistently works through Freedcamp. HUEMOR also had InVision in place. Through a series of web-based collaborative tools, we were able to preview the site in its entirety in terms of individual pages and features. We could even markup elements electronically so they could see it, as well as post tasks and changes. HUEMOR was extremely thorough when it came to project management.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re a very young team, but their level of delivered service relative to their demographic was extremely impressive. Service is not a thing which is commonly delivered well nowadays in the B2B environment, but HUEMOR was very responsive, personable, reachable, thorough, involved, and invested in our project. They were comforting to our team in the midst of a very uncertain period for us. Although it was positive in nature, the rebranding we initiated was a big, sweeping change. HUEMOR gave us a high degree of confidence that we were going to come out with something great.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Their QA could’ve been a bit better. Sometimes when we posted something to the collaborative site, or communicated a change in some way, HUEMOR had developers do it who may not have been local to our main contacts. Occasionally, it seemed as thorough they hadn’t give it a thorough review before signing off on it.

We sometimes felt as if we were conducting QA ourselves. This wasn’t a dealbreaker though, since nothing had been launched yet. Being more thorough in reviewing things before notifying clients would put HUEMOR at a 100% in my book.

I suggest clients be very clear about how the development process will run, even from a hypothetical standpoint. There needs to be a degree of confidence that the people being hired will be responsive, care about the finished product, and won’t simply drop and run to outsourced resources. It’s important to know the team landscape, press the candidate companies about their work styles, and know how they communicate. Communication and expectations are probably the biggest factors in what makes a relationship successful. In our case, HUEMOR met our expectations and delivered exactly what we wanted.

The modernized platform has attracted more web traffic and decreased navigation complaints and inquiries due to its streamlined design and stable performance. Huemor’s clear explanations, creative deliverables, and personal investment in the collaboration’s success continue to foster trust.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the marketing director at a building materials company. We offer quarrying, sourcing, and production of natural stone veneers, landscape stone, and cut stone.

Visitors use our website for getting inspiration, accessing architectural and specification resources, and ordering samples or building quotes. We manage our sample orders and quote requests internally using WooCommerce with manual updates and backend entries.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenges were you trying to address with Huemor?

Our company’s website had been outdated for about 4–5 years. Even though the website was functioning and our dealers were comfortable with it, we needed a more editorial look to attract architects and interior designers. We also wanted the website to have e-commerce capabilities. Even though we sell through a dealer network, we wanted to have that capability for the future.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The original website was built by a separate vendor. We chose use Huemor instead for this project because of the e-commerce functionality we wanted for the new website. Huemor had to develop a lot of complex coding because some of our materials are sold by the pallet and weight, while others are sold by square footage. They also had to develop e-commerce for our sample shipping. Huemor also created the “build a quote” feature, which we’ll use if we move to a full e-commerce model, but our dealers aren’t ready for it yet.

On the frontend of the website, visitors can filter materials by the color, tone, and price level and view different project galleries in our Brag Book. I know Huemor had trouble with the filters, especially with the back button. They didn't think it was a major issue, but we did. However, they fixed the issue promptly and explained the situation and solution clearly.

The whole team was easy to work with. Even when they didn't have good news, they worked toward a solution and explained their process. We felt like we could trust them.

How did you come to work with Huemor?

We considered 5 companies before deciding on Huemor. After our extensive online research, Huemor stood apart due to their creativity, tech-savvy, and passion for the UX. We also saw that Huemor had a lot of experience with multiple e-commerce systems, such as Magenta and WooCommerce, and they also had editorial and cutting-edge sites. We conducted extensive interviews and asked about other websites they admired. The aesthetic they chose really aligned with our vision for the new site. We also got a quote from the company that did our original website for comparison.

How much have you invested with Huemor?

Between the maintenance contract and the initial project, I’d estimate we’ve invested about $120,000 with Huemor.

What is the status of this engagement?

I think we started working with Huemor in June 2016. We wanted to have the new website done by October, but it took us much longer to upload all of the content because I didn't have much help, and we had to organize our files before we could put them on the site. We ended up launching the website in April 2017. We have a maintenance contract with Huemor to update all of the plugins, and I can reach out to them if an issue comes up.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or impact of the engagement?

Everything on the frontend of the site works well, and we use all the features. We’re already seeing higher traffic and receiving fewer questions about navigation because it's so intuitive. Customers can instantly immerse themselves and focus on what's important to them. Thousands of photos are organized per project and curated in 21 descriptively titled albums. Everything is easy to find through the use of gallery filters and category menus.

I did some web tutorials, but they weren’t needed because Huemor built such an intuitive website. They created a quote feature where people can put in how much square footage they need for the product they’re considering. We had no idea that visitors already knew what they wanted. This gives us more insight into the size and scope of their projects, and we’re getting a lot more detailed quotes. We can forward that information to our dealers and follow-through. On the flip side, we also know about how much we lose if we don't get the quote.

The transition to the new site seemed pretty easy for our dealers. Even though they liked our old website, they figured out what to do.

How did Huemor perform from a project management standpoint?

I worked with 2 developers and an owner, Jeff, who was the project lead. We uploaded a lot of our own content because we had so many photos, and 10–15 other users would log into the backend of the website. Jeff always responded to questions within half a day. I know that Mark, the main developer I was working with, didn't always check his email because he had to work intensely.

What did you find most impressive about Huemor?

I was impressed that they offered to visit our quarry. They traveled from New York to rural Wisconsin to see our location. We took them to a project site that was under construction, and they interviewed multiple people across our management positions to understand and express our culture.

Huemor introduced us to new services through the website, allowing us to use more information from visitors and direct our marketing and sales efforts. Our sales people were using a different chat client before we hired Huemor. After working with their team, we switched to Olark, which has been more useful. Huemor also introduced us to Lead Forensics, which lets us see and follow-up on lead traffic.

Are there any areas Huemor could improve?

The project didn't go perfectly, but when it didn't, the guys at Huemor explained our options clearly. The communication went well for us, but some customers may not like meeting a person at the start of the collaboration and then working with a different person for most of the project.

Feedback summary:

Huemor has an organized and thoughtful approach to design and development. I would definitely consider working with them again.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the Director of Marketing at a B2B company. Our target clients include private equity, hedge funds, alternative assets, venture capitals, and merger and acquisition firms, so the entire alternative assets market. Our product is essentially a CRM solution for these target segments.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Huemor?

We wanted to do a website redesign. Our old website was not responsive and wasn’t optimized for user flow or SEO. It didn’t properly represent all of our content, and it was also not optimized for lead generation. We were looking for a firm like Huemor to work with us to achieve all those goals.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had an existing site, but Huemor pretty much built a whole new site for us. My primary contact at Huemor was Jeff [Co-Founder & COO]. We also worked with Alex for the design portion of the project, and Mark for the development part. Jeff also worked with us on the SEO, and Lindsay [Sales and Marketing] worked with him on that portion of the project.

We wanted a site that could be easily managed and updated in real-time, so WordPress is what we chose. Huemor recommended Pantheon on the backend to manage versions and make sure the hosting is going smoothly. We’re very happy with the current setup.

Our specific challenge had more to do with the fact that we target so many different verticals within alternative assets and asset management. We wanted to make sure people could get where they needed to go based on their profile. We also have a big content portion of our site, and that was something we wanted to make sure was incorporated as part of the redesign. We had a lot of assets, like webinars, blogs, and e-books. We wanted our site to be image-heavy, and Huemor accomplished that. There are a lot of images throughout the site to meet our desire for a strong visual appeal.

We were also doing a completely new brand and logo. Huemor didn’t do that for us, but it was incorporated as part of the website redesign. We wanted a really modern and sleek look, and to bring out the customer testimonials. The unique thing about our website is the fact that, whether it’s thought leadership, product pages, or client testimonials, they’re all segmented by verticals. You can go to our client testimonials page and filter it by private equity, for example.

How did you come to work with Huemor?

I think we initially found them through an online search, and it may have been on Clutch’s site. We spoke to a lot of different firms, and Huemor stood out to us. I thought they really understood the user flow and what we were trying to do.

How much have you invested with Huemor?

We invested in the range of $50,000–$200,000. I think it was reasonable. We had negotiated for more of a flat fee structure, so it wasn’t by the hour.

What is the status of this engagement?

We kicked off the project in September of 2016. The design was finished in December and then started development in January of 2017. The site was launched in May of this year. It was a long timeframe, but we did a lot of testing, troubleshooting, and fixing bugs throughout. We also did a lot of content population, so it took a while. We had a much more rigorous internal testing process than your average firm, I would say.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

They were very responsive and had a very thoughtful approach. I think their team is very talented, especially Jeff. He’s very knowledgeable, and I felt he was a great resource for us.

The quality of their development work is quite high. I think their code is pretty good. I’m not a developer, so that’s really based on what I’ve seen while troubleshooting and testing with them. That being said, we were very involved in the actual testing. If there was anything wrong, we would point it out and ask them to fix it. We were very proactive in managing our communication with them, both verbally and written. I think the fact we were so involved and detail-oriented helped ensure the high quality of the project.

The design is definitely a vast improvement over our old site. I think the SEO was okay. We did it as part of the website launch, and they were very helpful with questions I had about URL structures and keywords. I’m not sure if that’s their strongest area, but I think the website redesign and development parts were great. They taught us how to use Pantheon too, and really helped our technology team understand how to manage the website. They were very patient and professional throughout.

How did Huemor perform from a project management standpoint?

We invested a lot of resources in managing the project from our side.  For example, we set up weekly calls with them and made sure to follow up with them if we didn’t hear back from them in a timely manner. Jeff was the main project manager. They were pretty responsive throughout. We did have a few hiccups in between when it was hard to get a hold of them, but we addressed that. They introduced us to another project manager in the beginning of the project, but he wasn’t involved. Jeff was our main point of contact. He was super-knowledgeable and managed the resources on his side.

What did you find most impressive about Huemor?

I liked the way we ended up managing bug fixes. They were very organized throughout. They had a professional approach to our website project from the initial design to the development of the site. They managed things on InVision and helped us to visualize what we wanted. When we moved to development, we could check their progress very easily. We used Freedcamp to log all the bugs and figure out where things were. I set up a call with them every other week to go through questions we had. Compared to other website projects, there was a lot of visibility and transparency, which I liked. I had a direct line to their developer for any questions, and that was really helpful.

Are there any areas Huemor could improve?

Jeff had a lot going on, so it might have helped to have another project manager who had more time to focus on us. The other project manager we met was never involved. Jeff was great, but there’s only so much one person can do. For the most part, they were good at communicating and being responsive. However, there were a few times during development where we had trouble getting a hold of them.
