BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

GUNNAR Optics is a digital eye strain glasses company. My role was president and chief marketing officer.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Fullmoon Digital?

Since there were no other eye strain glasses on the market, we had to create a new category. Consumers wouldn’t know what to search for, and we needed to create an entirely new set of search terms and develop brand and product awareness. We wanted help to increase our visibility across various search platforms.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They did all of our paid search and much of our SEO. Essentially, they acted as our full-funnel marketing assistant and supported everything from digital acquisition to conversion, retargeting, and remarketing. They also found appropriate contacts to add to our direct email campaigns.

Another major part of their involvement was keyword research. We had some thoughts on where to start, but their insight into larger search engines yielded a lot of important information that helped us determine which terms were most useful. They built out a three-month marketing calendar that included our targets, primary posts, contributions to our social media messaging, and follow-up posts. We then revisited the calendar each month to make adjustments to ensure we stayed on track.

What is the team composition?

Their owner worked with us before he founded Fullmoon. When he broke off to start his own company, we left with him. That was about three and a half years ago.

How did you come to work with Fullmoon Digital?

I only worked with the owner. He was our direct point of contact and worked very closely with me and my team. I know he had a team that worked under him, but I can’t cite its exact size.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent between $3,000–$4,000 a month. We had a primary contract with them, but also added intermittent tasks that were outside that contract. In all, we spent at least $50,000 with them each year.

What is the status of this engagement?

The collaboration started before their inception, but the collaboration with Fullmoon probably started around February or March 2015. I left the company in March 2018, but the partnership was ongoing at my departure. I’m currently in conversations with them to start a relationship with my new company.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our traffic and our revenue grew consistently over the course of our collaboration. By the time I left, we saw at least a 20% increase in revenue and around a 40% boost in traffic volume. There was nothing negative about the collaboration.

How did Fullmoon Digital perform from a project management standpoint?

They did very well throughout the years of interaction with them. We had regular weekly calls and frequent updates. Whenever we faced a rapid string of changes, they were in continual conversations with us to help us through. We used Basecamp as our primary management tool, and general email for daily needs. Even though they weren’t in the building with us, they felt like a part of the team.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their attention to detail was really good. They brought new things to us all the time, and we had a very collaborative relationship. We knew the brand, and they had the wherewithal to help us grow. Project management and their ability to keep us on task were major selling points. They were very proactive and kept us accountable, especially as we approached deadlines for important campaigns.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything they should change. We learned a lot as we went, and they leveraged their connections to get us great customer service with some third-party vendors. We got good direction and other useful perks from them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be organized. They will help keep you on task, but it’s important to be prepared to keep up with them. Let them steer the project on the digital strategy side, but they will only be as successful as you allow them to be.

Their team also helped us test our advertising strategies and find new profitable markets. Some of their work is paid advertising, but they also manage our Facebook and Instagram accounts. Additionally, they’re helping us expand our use of Google Analytics. The team continues to support our efforts.

Derek (Founder & CEO, Fullmoon Digital) is our project manager. We also work with Jeff (Growth Marketing & Co-Founder, Fullmoon Digital), but I haven’t dealt personally with anyone else.
