We started working with Josh at Envision to get a better understanding of how people engaged with our app to iterate existing features, build new ones and increase retention rates. We started working together when we launched our app to help us set up our data strategy and tools. He has given us invaluable help in setting up Mixpanel, AppsFlyer and RevenueCat as well as the bespoke dashboards within Mixpanel and APIs into other products. It's been extremely helpful for us in understanding how people are moving through the app and iterating our app (alongside qualitative feedback). He's also helped us with facebook and TikTok ad set up - but again challenged us to think of acquisition outside of paid media.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
We now have a better retention rate than the benchmark for digital health apps, and the data has certainly informed our product pipeline. We're now getting ready to scale what we've got so it's hard to comment from a revenue perspective as that was not our objective when we started working together. Regarding timelines, as a product manager I saw value in the dashboards from week 1. It's also been extremely helpful data to present back in investor and partnership conversations. I can personally recommend Josh for helping us gather the product data we needed as a business.

We're still in initial stages for the app, but overall, the service and expertise Josh and Envision providing were great. The process of setting up our MarTech stack was new for our team and Envision made it a seamless and easy process. All the while Josh was great about educating our team throughout.

Josh and team were easy to communicate with and provided frequent updates. We had weekly phone calls with all parties, but most of the feedback was through email. Everything was delivered on time and we received ample warning if a deadline wasn’t going to be met.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
Envision’s experience and understanding of the mobile app space was very deep and comprehensive. They knew everything about all platforms, best practices on implementation, and even provided feedback on UX and execution. Since this was our first app, they were also patient and willing to walk us through their process while we learned.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
Nothing. The only challenging part was the time difference with Envision located in the UK, Cluster in Los Angeles, and our tech/dev team located in Brazil.

Their communication was on point, and they were very flexible. We set some KPIs early on in the year, but we realized during COVID-19 that we wouldn’t meet those goals. So in March, we needed to pivot and change the direction of where we were going. Every Thursday they provided updates on how well we were meeting each of our goals.

Things moved very quickly, and Envision Digital was able to pivot as we needed. Their ability to keep the project moving forward, even during COVID-19, was very impressive.

It would have been helpful if they had more insight in the space ahead of time; we don’t think Envision Digital has worked in our industry before. As a result, they needed to learn a lot about what we were targeting in the early stages of our engagement.

Envision provided a strategy for our business to move forward and achieve our goals. They put together an acquisition plan that laid out what channels we could use to actually acquire our customers. They used paid marketing tools such as Facebook Ads. Their team also created an activation plan. After we acquire customers, the plan instructs us on how to reach our desired KPIs.

How did you come to work with Envision Digital?
We chose Envision because they were the only agency that was familiar with Mixpanel, which was an analytical tool that I specifically needed. I spoke with other agencies that focused on growth strategies for the web. I wanted a partner that offered strategies on how to grow within the app market.

Their service was superb. When I first met with Josh, he outlined a plan with specific steps. The process was methodical in terms of how we made those steps. As I didn’t have an analytical skillset, it was comforting knowing that Envision had that knowledge.
Their team narrowed their strategies to the type of market that we wanted. They looked closely at what would impact our small budget. For example, if our cost per acquisition was too high, Envision tweaked the budget by the next meeting. They managed to yield results that I didn’t think possible from our small budget.
How did Envision Digital perform from a project management standpoint?
We initially met face-to-face and outlined the project plan. We then had a follow-up call to outline what was required. We also communicated via email and Slack and had weekly video calls throughout the project’s duration.
They perfectly managed deadlines. The way forward was planned at the initial meeting. To be honest, I held them back at points. We weren’t able to implement a few components that would’ve allowed us to move faster.
What did you find most impressive about them?
We could actually see the project progress, which was reassuring. When we started, we didn’t have regular users onboarding to the platform. When working with Envision, we saw their strategies. I had a limited budget that Envision stretched to meet excellent outcomes.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I wish I could’ve had them on the project full time. That was likely due to my limited budget. I would’ve liked them to be able to work on our strategies on a day-to-day basis. It was also a shame that we couldn’t meet face-to-face as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Don’t be put off by having to pay for customer acquisition or industry jargon. Look at marketing as a business strategy that will give you an ROI. Consider marketing a necessity just like customers.

We’re specialists in app development, not app marketing, and we needed help with that.

What was the scope of their involvement?
Envision Digital has helped us with a startup client that didn’t have app marketing. They also helped us with a client who had already invested a lot in marketing and was trying to save their app from failing.
The team worked as a white-label solution for the startup client, while the other we pushed straight to them. For the project we outsourced to them, we were developing the app for the client, and we were late.
We proposed to help the client with marketing, and we reached out to Envision Digital for that. The app was for the dental industry, and it was in the pre-release stage. We were trying to validate the concept before the app was even ready.
We illustrated the concept to Josh (Managing Director), and he asked us about our target market, what we planned to achieve by targeting that market, what analytics we’d implemented, and so on.
He helped us get complete clarity on who was being served, helped us install analytics, and determined the KPIs we had to measure in order to see if the app was a success. They sorted out the app for the launch, and the second part was validating it.
Envision Digital set up all the presale Facebook and Instagram advertising for the client and handled most of the ad creation. The team also helped us with some SEO and blog articles for our company.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Envision Digital achieved growth, clarity, and strategy for our client, and they got people interested in the app before it was even launched. When it did launch, we had KPIs sorted out about what we needed to look out for.
The cost per acquisition on Facebook was cheaper than the industry average, and these were pre-COVID results.
I know that Facebook and Instagram results were skewed massively after COVID, because everyone was at home and a lot of advertisers pulled back their budgets. We did really well considering that dental clinics are really competitive.
How did Envision Digital perform from a project management standpoint?
Josh is willing to sacrifice his own health to make the client happy. He was always available, even at times when he shouldn’t have been. He replied even at 9 pm and on weekends, and he went above and beyond.
I can’t remember Envision Digital ever missing a deadline. They communicated when it would take Facebook 1–3 days to review an ad, and digital strategy meetings were always well-organized.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Something I’ve learned about Josh is that he’s more of a long-term partner, and I appreciate that a lot. His thinking is that, if we’re successful, we’re going to send him more business.
He understands the value of a lifetime customer over that of a quick buck, which is rare in this industry. App marketers usually charge upfront retainers, and the price stays the same no matter the results.
Are there any areas they could improve?
It’s difficult to answer because, as a company matures, they’ll do things a lot better. The only thing I could say is that they could automate a few systems and processes, such as sending an email confirmation after booking a meeting. I’m talking from an agency perspective, where I know what it’s like to be overrun with clients.
Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?
The client should know who they’re targeting with their app and be absolutely clear about their target. They should also be open to change and advice. At the end of the day, Josh is an expert at what he does, and we hire experts to tell us what to do, not the other way around.
