Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the VP for an organization that sells optical components for chemical analysis. We sell them to academic and government researchers, pharmaceuticals, petrochemical, and food and beverage companies.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Eighth Revolution?
We wanted to bring our technology and know-how into the cannabinoid space. As a result, we hired Eighth to serve as our partner; we used their technical knowledge, business acumen, and relationships to accelerate our project tremendously.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
We haven’t gone public with what’s involved in our technology and partnership; we’re still working behind the scenes. As such, discussing key deliverables is difficult. In any case, Eighth has helped us develop a piece of analytical hardware from initial concept to production, prototyping, and design — they’ve turned our idea into a proof of concept (POC). Their team also uses third-party partners for live measurements and design experiments. Essentially, they've helped us find R&D partners while providing technical guidance.
Eighth is also helping us understand the nuances of processes in extraction and manufacturing facilities. On top of that, they help us focus our efforts in the right direction as we move toward commercialization. They’re currently lining up our initial customers and target market. Most of this work is done remotely, but Kellan (Co-Founder, CSO & Principal Consultant) has also joined us on location for tests.
What is the team composition?
Apart from Kellan, we also work primarily with Bryan (Co-Founder & Managing Director).
How did you come to work with Eighth Revolution?
We found Eighth through a referral from our partners. We chose them since they had the most well-rounded understanding of our project. It was an easy choice. We had a tremendous amount of confidence in Kellan’s understanding of both the market and the science involved in it. Bryan also understood our commercial and business landscape. As a result, we hired them to help us craft and refine our strategy.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve invested between $30,000–$40,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
The partnership started in May 2020, and it’s ongoing.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We haven’t defined any hard metrics up to this point, but the wide breadth of Eighth’s network has been of tremendous value for our company. In terms of work quality, no one else can provide what we’ve received from them. We know scientists and businesses in this industry, but few of them have people who can provide the full support, insights, and network that we receive from Eighth. As a result, it’s hard to compare them to anybody else.
How did Eighth Revolution perform from a project management standpoint?
Eighth manages the project wonderfully. I’ve had shortcomings when it comes to focusing on the project, but they’ve been able to keep us moving along. For context, I look after every aspect of the business in my day-to-day work. As a result, having their team as a trustworthy and reliable partner in shepherding this project has been invaluable.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They’re extremely professional, knowledgeable, and generous with their time. Overall, they’re a highly dynamic team.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, there aren’t any.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Trust them; share as much information as possible because anything you can say about your project is valuable to them. They have unique and impressive ways of thinking and working through problems. Given that, the more information you give them, the better.
