Kelly Services: Thought leadership reports

KellyOCG is a globally acknowledged leader in content marketing. Part of the company’s success has been to build the profile of its leading executives through thought leadership reports.

Earlier this year, we worked on the Does Your Talent Supply Chain Measure Up? report with KellyOCG. The report explores how organisations can build their talent supply chains, with a focus on using data analytics. It is one of several reports we have worked on with KellyOCG that discusses sophisticated human resources topics.

We also assist the company internationally with proofreading in both British and US English.

Optus Business: Future of Business report

Editor Group helped Optus write and edit the past four editions of this major report, which looks at how mobile technologies, computers and the internet are changing the landscape for Australian businesses and government organisations. We also produced a range of associated communications such as blog posts, industry-specific reports, case studies and thought leadership pieces.

The 2014 edition featured interviews with more than 500 customer-experience, marketing and IT decision makers and 5,000 consumers across a range of industries.

A key part of our role is helping to distil the enormous number of insights generated by this comprehensive research process into valuable insights for company leaders and policy makers.

Herbert Smith Freehills: Global website

We assisted top Australian law firm Freehills and UK-based Herbert Smith in the lead up to their merger in 2012.

As part of the merger, we provided writing and editing services from Sydney for the launch of the new  Herbert Smith Freehills website, completing extensive copy within tight deadlines and in line with the merged firm’s distinctive brand positioning and language.

Herbert Smith Freehills now ranks among the world’s top global law firms, with 2,800 lawyers in offices spanning Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and the US.

Deloitte: Mobile-first website

In late 2014, Editor Group assisted in rewriting content on the Deloitte Australia website as the firm upgraded to a new, mobile-first publishing system.

The first step was to help the firm articulate how its brand should be captured in words, then document this brand voice in a writing style guide. We then rewrote much of the site’s written content to suit the mobile-first approach.

The project involved delivering a large amount of ‘ready to go’ copy within tight timeframes. Editor Group achieved this by assigning a team of writers supported by a central senior editor and proofreading team to ensure the copy we delivered was word perfect, suitable for a mobile-first platform, appropriate for the firm and compelling for clients and other stakeholders.

NSW Public Service Commission: State of the NSW Public Sector report

Editor Group wrote, edited and proofread the copy for the NSW Public Service Commission’s 2014 State of the NSW Public Sector report.

This is the third version of this report that we’ve worked on, having started with the inaugural report in 2012. Each year, Editor Group works closely with the PSC team to develop a structure for the report, set briefs for the staff writers contributing to each section, and then edit and refine copy as it becomes available to compile into the full report.

SAS: Forum invitations and eDMs

Business intelligence company SAS company SAS wanted to attract more than 1,000 executives and IT professionals to SAS Forum 2013. We worked with SAS to create an engaging and informative eDM and direct mail marketing campaign to help them achieve this goal.

We tailored our short, snappy and inspiring copy to a wide range of audiences, creating a sense of anticipation by gradually revealing more information about the event.

Over the course of six months, we developed around 80 eDMs, direct mail items and telemarketing scripts. We also wrote and edited copy for the Forum microsite, including information about speakers, panel discussions, presentations and courses.

SPRING Singapore: SPRINGnews

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a critical role in Singapore’s economy, contributing almost 50% of GDP. SPRING Singapore is the government agency responsible for helping SMEs grow, and building trust in local products and services.

Since 2014, Editor Group has partnered with SPRING to produce SPRINGnews, a monthly publication which showcases how SMEs can learn from the experiences of successful companies and start-ups, and make use of SPRING’s assistance programs.

NSW Trade & Investment: Mobile-first website

In 2014, Editor Group worked with NSW Trade & Investment to create copy for a new, mobile-first website. The agency was consolidating multiple websites into one, changing the way it presented itself to its various audiences, and updating and revitalising its content.

Editor Group first defined the site’s core messaging and value proposition, to help ensure consistency across all content. We then wrote, edited and proofread copy for around 200 pages across the site.

To deliver such a large amount of copy within tight timeframes, Editor Group assigned a team of writers supported by a central senior editor and proofreading team to ensure the copy we delivered was word perfect, suitable for a mobile-first platform and compelling for the agency’s audiences and stakeholders.

Gilbert + Tobin: Recruitment magazine and app

Gilbert + Tobin is one of Australia’s pre-eminent corporate law firms. It needs to clearly and persuasively communicate the value and career path it offers graduates to differentiate the firm from others.

Since 2009, Editor Group has partnered with the firm’s People Team to produce a recruitment magazine, which tells the firm’s story and promotes its benefits in a detailed, lively and engaging way.

Cisco: Case study program

Cisco is the worldwide leader in networking products and services that transform how people connect, communicate and collaborate. 

For more than 10 years, Editor Group has written in-depth case studies for Cisco’s teams around the world. These case studies show how customers use Cisco's technology and solutions to solve their business issues and grow.

Editor Group manages the interviews, writing and revisions, and places the final case study into Cisco’s case study template for publication.

BT Financial Group: Westpac Private Bank rebrand

We assisted Westpac Private Bank in a major overhaul of its brand identity, providing writing and editing services for a wide range of marketing collateral.

While new visuals were a central part of the rebrand, Westpac Private Bank knew that a new coat of paint wasn’t enough: they also needed a new brand voice to reinforce their messaging.

Editor Group developed and crafted the tone of the bank’s written communications, particularly for its lead and wealth brochures. We also rewrote the client pitch pack, as well as flyers to market the bank’s diverse product range.

Origin: Writing style guide

A style guide outlines the writing rules individuals within an organisation should follow. Editor Group has created style guides for numerous companies, government departments and not-for-profit organisations, including this one for major energy company Origin.

The guide advises Origin staff on how to use the right tone of voice and writing approach to ensure their written communications reinforce the company’s brand language. It also provides guidance on the presentation of key terms, common units such as times and currencies, and punctuation such as quote marks and bullet point lists. This helps ensure all Origin content is produced to a high and consistent standard.

Indigenous Business Australia: Annual reports

For five years, Editor Group has worked with Indigenous Business Australia to write, edit, proofread and index its 200-page annual reports. We recently completed the organisation’s 2013–14 report.

IBA received a Gold award for the 2011–12 report from the Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA). The organisation won Silver in 2012–13. The IPAA Annual Report Awards review each document’s content, presentation, tone and overall effectiveness.

IBA also received its third Silver award at the Australasian Reporting Awards (ARA), which recognise the effective communication of financial and business information.

Australian Securities and Investments Commission: MoneySmart website

Editor Group worked closely with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) over 10 months to write, edit and proofread approximately 200 webpages for the regulator’s MoneySmart consumer finance website.

We reviewed copy to ensure complex financial information was written in engaging, easy-to-understand language.

The website attracted more than 335,000 unique visitors in the first three months after its launch and has won numerous awards

I am a business marketing executive manager for an Australian-based financial services company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What was the business challenge that you were trying to address when you approached Editor Group?

We have had numerous content-related jobs that we didn’t have the bandwidth to deliver internally. The key problem we always had was finding a content agency who just "got it," an agency who understands our business goals. Other agencies we’ve partnered with did not have a thorough financial services background or had not done their due homework to deliver on the business problems we were solving for. I must say Editor Group has always delivered and has definitely helped make our life easier.

SOLUTION

Can you talk about the scope of the project? What were the exact services or methodologies Editor Group provided or implemented?

The scope of the work Editor Group provides ranges from digital campaign planning to print production. The key jobs that they have worked on for us include case studies, white papers, information sheets, annual reports, which includes writing and proofing; website competitor and strategic review; credentials/sales material and market positioning; communications planning and execution; and magazine articles, such as profiles for executives; and brand identity, such as magazine redesign and relaunch.

Editor Group was able to come in and understand our business problems and requirements. We liked that they took the time to understand the full problem first to ensure they were solving for the right thing.

Can you give us a sense of the size of the project in dollar terms or personnel work hours?

Looking back on all of the work Editor Group has provided us, the full scope of work was somewhere near $750,000.

When working with them, was there anything unique or special about them compared to other companies with which you may have worked?

Editor Group is extremely approachable. They took the time to get to know our business. The value add and expertise they bring to the table is very impressive. There have been numerous times where I have been unable to take a meeting with my senior stakeholders, so our account manager has been able to attend these meetings for me and professionally represent me. The Editor Group team is amazing and always keep within scope.

Looking back on the project, is there any area that they could improve upon or that you would do differently?

Not at all. This is why we continue to use Editor Group.

We are Deloitte Australia. We are one of the member firms of the global network of professional service firms of Deloitte, which is the largest professional services firm in the world. 

What is your role and responsibilities?

Director of corporate communications. I look after internal and external communications and also play a significant role in the social media work for the company. My team and the digital marketing team work closely together.

What was your goal for working with Editor Group?

We had a major relaunch of our website last year. We wanted to create a website with much more dynamic content. We needed to rewrite and create from scratch around 200 pages for the new website. 

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their work.

We wanted to condense 10,000 pages down to 1,000 pages. Our team figured out what needed going to be cut and Editor Group rewrote 120 pages of brand new content. They needed to understand all our different service lines. Editor Group created content that was more engaging than it had been before. They created an editorial style guide for us so anyone creating content going forward has some guidelines to help them do that.

What was your process for selecting Editor Group with which to work?

They’ve helped us before with more traditional editorial work. We didn’t seriously consider them for the website to start with because there were other firms who purported to be pure content marketing firms and we were engaging with them. But, they turned out to be extremely expensive and they didn’t really understand us and what we were trying to do. We got in touch with the owner of Editor Group and talked to him about what we wanted to do and he was positive they could help us. We needed someone who understood us that we could trust, and that would hit the ground running.

When was the work completed?

This project was completed in October 2014. However, we’ve worked with them for more than 10 years.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Do you have any statistics or metrics to track improvement from the project?

It definitely improved our website. There’s 300 pages that are an extraordinary amount more appealing than they were before. The content is dynamic and it’s sharable. Editor Group wasn’t the cheapest, but they were definitely the best value for money. They really took the time to understand Deloitte and what we were trying to do differently. They helped our team think about content in a different way. 

Is there anything unique or special about Editor Group that really makes them stand out compared to other online marketing companies?

They became part of our team. They got to know us so well. They think like us, but they still challenge us. The leader of the team is fantastic.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

Not really for this project.
