Drop Media exceeded expectations in the recording and production of our video. Despite our limited budget, they treated the project and everyone involved with the utmost professionalism, generosity, and care, as if we were working with a much larger budget. Their dedication to quality and to making our interviewees feel valued created an impressive final product. While they were incredible to work with, a clearer breakdown of budget allocation might have helped us manage expectations and explore additional options for future projects. Overall, Drop Media’s commitment to excellence made the experience exceptional.

GOALS / STRATEGY

From a publishing standpoint, focus was placed on the owned and partner media channels, aiming to distribute content as far and wide as possible. This said, especially with limited resources, we are going to focus on capturing / creating bite sized such as Instagram Reels, Raw Clips, and other assets that do not require a heavy editing lift as they are not narrative based. This content typically outperforms more ‘Developed edits” anyhow, and our goal is to reach the eyeballs far and wide.

• The spirit and grandeur of the Breck Epic (big vistas, A+ Singletrack, and the energy of the race)
• Breck Epic Womens Tour. This is lining up to be a massive turnout and we are aiming to keep that ball rolling in years to come.
• The footprint of events this weekend and how they make this THE place to be each year.

Drop Media was a cultural fit as well as a tremendous technical partner. Pairing the needs of a sprawling backcountry event with the rersources necessary to cover it, and then fill the pipeline between the on-site product and its worldwide fans is a LARGE job. One they did concientiously and well.

Drop Media will be focused on building a script and treatment based on the key points and features provided by the team. We will plan on shooting the visuals over 2 days. The production will include cameras and camera support (gimbals +), a lighting package and audio equipment for the interviews. The 2 minute edit will include 1 revision with touch ups and :30 - :15 cut downs for social channels and beyond. 

The edit is generally done within 2 weeks for the final shoot date with additional revisions following if needed. Drop Media will provide the raw footage on a harddrive for DTG so that it can be used in the future. Additionally, we will keep the footage on our RAID to ensure further edits can be done at a later date. ( 1 year from last project date ) *Camera support and equipment are included in all levels of our productions and are relative to the budgets presented.

All social media platforms had increased engagement and reach from video posts. We are excited to utilize the video to promote our product to our target customers this fall and are confident we will receive excellent responses.

Drop Media helped us develop our idea from a simple focus to one that was fully fledged and focused on reaching our goals. From scripting to production, the work was phenomenal. Onsite shoot locally required 2 actors and a private location, Drop Media facilitated getting them all aligned for the shoot, making our internal process a lot easier and less stressful.

After shooting, a quick edit turn around provided our team with plenty of time to review and provide feedback about the final outputs. Deliverables: three 30 second spots and one 90 second long form video.

This was not an easy project. Help us get a big crew into the backcountry on sleds, set up a camp, and capture the media testing the gear in a stunning environment. As nature would have it, we were socked in with snow, but James and the Drop Media team made it happen - a beautiful video (along with some fantastic photography) that really brought the whole project together.

James was introduced to me through a colleague, and was immediately someone who I could work with. His previous work stood out for the ability to get right into and really capture the action or the feeling. He's super professional, on-time and creative.

We worked through some concepts with James, but as soon as the craziness of the storm and activities at the snow camp set in, he really took over and made it happen. We worked on some segments with him, then talked through what we were really looking for.

We worked directly with James. He gave us a lot of feedback about the concept, leading up to the trip, and at almost every stage along the way, and it really showed once we were on-site. We also went back and forth during the post-production process, and James is always interested to hear feedback and work with you.

Our clients were absolutely blown away, and we use the video in agency materials to this day. It brought the whole trip, and the reason we did it, together.

They had to know when - based on the time of day, weather coming in or leaving, group plans, etc. of what we should be shooting and when. I’m the executive director and producer of BANDALOOP. We’re a vertical dance company that performs all over the world on vertical landscapes like cliffs and skyscrapers. As a nonprofit dance company, performance art is our priority, but there is a connection to film and camera work.

What challenge were you trying to address with Drop Media?

Each time we’ve worked with Drop Media and James (Founder & Creative Director), it’s been about the story and line that we want to draw around our public art. We want to deliver our message of dance in a way that’s accessible to people.

It’s about the story, but it’s also about the deliverables. It’s about how we capture it mindfully and how we get to these places with the right cameras and people. Drop Media helps us get the cameras in those locations while crafting the footage in a story that connects with us.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Most of the projects deal with planning from pre to post-production. We start with planning a team to be in the field with us to film and shoot. Then, bringing that footage into some sort of deliverable, whether it’s a social media short or a longer, more intended edit process.

What is the team composition?

It ranges. There are times where it’s only James and I. But whenever we have a bigger project, he’s assembling a team of three to six that could include extra cameras or an editor.

In some cases, I’ll bring James to Malaysia or Singapore because that’s in our budget to bring one. But then he’s working with a local team if we can’t bring our own assets.

We’ve spent somewhere between $200,000–$250,000 on numerous projects.

Our engagement with Drop Media started in January 2014.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The team at Drop Media is top-notch. Their world-class expertise transfers into a beautiful piece of work, bringing together the human element of dance and location. This takes a keen perception.

The understanding and collaboration with our directors are also seamless. I’d lean on them in terms of strength in the field, but they can take those elements back into post-production.

How did Drop Media perform from a project management standpoint?

Our process, whether it’s across a video or Dropbox to share footage, is very clean. Our method of hard drive management that includes duplicating and protecting data has all been very top-notch. We sometimes have to transport data and equipment back from exotic locations; the entire process is organized and logistical. Other project management elements are on our side.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What’s noteworthy to us is the network. James is at a high bar in the game of vertical capture and storytelling. With this process, it’s great if a person is a good camera operator or storyteller, but if that can’t be applied vertically, it’s a nonstarter.

The ability to network with the people around him is great. We’re working with high caliber people when that team grows. It’s vital that as budget and team grow, the bar stays high. Their adaptability and strength in vertical asset quality control are critical for us.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It’s improved over the years, but the awareness of where the job begins and ends is important. Since we’re in the nonprofit sector, we’re not as huge as big corporate clients and don’t have the same budget. It’s challenging for any company or partner of ours to find that gray area.

It’s less of a reflection of Drop Media, but part of our industry. As people grow and get stronger, they figure out how to manage that.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Clarity and focus of story help Drop Media go far. There are plenty of occasions where I can give them freedom. They do far better when there is clarity and a good structure. I’ve seen James and his team shine with having just an end goal or having a full structure, but if it’s in the middle, it gets a little muddy.

I'm a producer and director for an adventure documentary film titled "A Long Way From Nowhere."

For what projects/services did your company hire Drop Media, and what were your goals?

We hired James and Dropmedia for the production of our adventure documentary. The goal was to cover a 150 mile trail race through the desert in June while also exploring deeper stories and struggles of the various racers.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

Dropmedia was suggested by an adventure athlete based off of a film the company had previously filmed out in the desert.

We started with an initial meeting with James where we laid out plans for the project, our goals and vision. We met multiple times before filming to solidify and clarify these plans. We also used James' expertise in adventure filmmaking to do a premortem on logistical challenges we would face with a four person film crew across 150 miles of the desert.

We then filmed initial interviews with the participants of the film to cast a wide net on potential stories to explore as the race played out. The main part of production was over 7 days in an incredibly hostile desert as we filmed trail runners all across the 150 mile trail. Through these days we also conducted interviews.

James of Dropmedia was our tech guy, filming guru as he not only filmed the race with drone and cameras but setup interviews, dumped the footage onto hard rives, and kept the energy level of group morale high. Over the next year we also conducted two more filming weekends in Salt Lake City and Maryland. James directed various scenes and setup and participated in asking questions during our interview sessions.

Who did you work with and what was the feedback process like?

We worked with James from Dropmedia. The feedback was always respectful, upbeat and positive. We had moments of disagreement in the crew but they were always conducted with positivity, artistic vision, and with the film's best interest at heart. James brought his many years of experience working on film shoots like this and was always more than willing to educate and collaborate with all of our ideas.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We showed the final product to the various racers, their families, and fellow filmmakers at a theater and received lots of positive feedback. Lots of laughs, tears and visceral reactions to the film. More than once I've heard people comment on how "Beautiful the footage is" which all comes back to the wonderful work James did on this project.

James was very easy and fun to collaborate with. After spending a lot of time with him on this project (including 7 straight days in harsh conditions) I really looked up to and respected him as a filmmaker and a human being. He was very easy to communicate with, loved sharing his passion for this kind of work, and brought a hardworking, passionate energy to our film.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I cannot say enough kind words about Dropmedia and James. I am very impressed with his professionalism, his passion, and his positivity. James worked with a first time filmmaker and a veteran filmmaker and not only formed friendships with both but was able to impart many lessons as it pertained to filming an adventure documentary. I was simply impressed by him as a filmmaker, a creative collaborator and a genuinely great guy.

From my experience with Dropmedia I honestly cannot find an area that could have been improved on. Well done!
