We just launched the video and it’s on our website.

They didn’t really give us any timeframes for the work to be completed, but overall they did everything in a timely manner. It was frustrating at times to communicate with them, but they provided us with a good product once we were able to speak to someone and explain what we needed. 

Our primary form of communication was through an online portal, and we spoke on the phone to an editor once. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

They gave us a high-quality product that we were satisfied with. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

They weren’t the best at picking up the phone, so it was a little frustrating when we weren’t able to express what our needs were. We also spent more than we originally expected.

My responsibilities include opening and closing the space every day, managing social media accounts, and conducting community outreach with various tenants to generate leads. We wanted to promote our business by producing a commercial.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, we had a meeting with The Draw Shop, LLC to discuss the deliverables of our project and what we wanted the commercial to be. From there, they started with the work, handling the entire production process, including the scripting, drawing of the storyboard, and selection of the voice actor. The commercial will be used as a marketing tool for our Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram accounts, as well as our website.

We worked with 4–5 people from their side, including a project manager and a couple of artists.

We found out about them through a marketing firm.

We spent about $3,000.

We worked together on this project from June–August 2022.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We weren’t blown away by the video that The Draw Shop, LLC delivered, but we still thought it was good. We still haven't posted the video, so we don’t have any specific metrics to share.

How did The Draw Shop, LLC perform from a project management standpoint?

They stayed on top of everything to make sure every task was getting done on time. They were very responsive, too. For communication, we use Basecamp, email, and Zoom.

Are there any areas they could improve on?

They should be more straightforward with the fees and do a better job of getting feedback from their client. If we could redo this project again, I would try to be more involved at the beginning of the process. We weren’t too pleased with what they were delivering at the start, so we had to step in and take more control.

The Draw Shop created a storyboard, put out drafts, and wrote the voiceover. They also gave us opportunities to make revisions throughout the process. The video itself was entirely animated, and The Draw Shop handled all the post-production mixing and editing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’ve received a significant amount of traction from the video compared to our other social media efforts. The video itself is posted on YouTube and our other social media channels. It was also distributed via a press release and lives on our website.

How did The Draw Shop, LLC perform from a project management standpoint?

They were great with project management. We worked together and asked questions of them through an online forum. Our communication also happened over email. It was a simple project.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their creativity stood out, as did the powerful messaging they implemented in the video.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Everything worked out very well. Perhaps we provided a little too much detail in our response to the initial form they had us fill out, but that’s it.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Depending on what your project is and what level of sophistication you’re looking for, bring them in early on to give them a bit more time than we gave them. We were facing a deadline, but be sure to work with their creative team to draw out a plan. They have great suggestions.

We were educating people on how to raise money for the City of Hope through an event.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The Draw Shop developed two videos for us. The initial set was produced in 2017 and consisted of two how-to videos: one on how to raise money and another about how to get involved in fundraising. Those were whiteboard animation videos. For the project, The Draw Shop told us what to expect from the videos, providing us with examples of similar projects they’ve done. 

We’ve updated the original videos every year, and we’ve recently done a significant revamp on the videos to make them more generic. We wanted the videos to be more usable for other events. The videos have been posted on our website.

I found them through a Google search; I liked their portfolio and thought their pricing was fair.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested at least $10,000 over the past few years. The first project was $3,000; each update was $500–$1,000 a year. The most recent revamp was about $2,000.

Our ongoing engagement began in April 2017.

I’m unsure how many views our videos have gotten because whenever we update them, the view counter goes back to zero. However, we’ve been able to raise more money than ever using the videos. We used to raise less than $1 million from the event connected to the video, and now we’re raising almost $3 million. 

How did The Draw Shop perform from a project management standpoint?

I have no complaints about their project management. They use Basecamp to track projects and communicate through emails and phone calls. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The Draw Shop’s consistency has been excellent.

No, there isn't anything they can really improve.

Customers need to figure out what they want to convey from a video and communicate it clearly with the team from The Draw Shop.

I’m a director with Fiona Hutton and Associates. We’re a full-service public affairs firm that works on some of California’s most high-profile issues: from energy, natural resources, and land use to police reform, digital access, and healthcare.

What challenge were you trying to address with The Draw Shop, LLC?

In the course of our work, we’re often in the position of communicating very complicated policies, laws, and programs to people who may not know anything about those things. When we’re trying to educate a broader audience like the general public, we go to The Draw Shop to develop whiteboard videos. They break down complex issues into pieces of information that are most critical to know while also providing the viewer with a good experience. They act as our full strategic partner.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The two projects I’ll discuss here are whiteboard videos surrounding water conservation efforts. One was timed with an announcement from the state government of California, and the other was for a county-level agricultural water provider.

What is the team composition?

We work with anywhere from 3–4 people. I’ll coordinate with Rose (Chief People Officer) and Melody (Project Coordinator) on administrative and logistical issues, and then with John-Luke (Art Director), and another resource on the content creation itself. They also bring in a narrator.

My colleagues had already used them when I came onboard. When I needed to communicate information in a similar way, I reached out to them again. We’ve been working together years.

How much have you invested with them?

They charge per minute of produced video, and most videos that we do are between 2–3 minutes. Over the years, we’ve spent around $20,000–$30,000 with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’ve been working together since January 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

For the state-wide video timed with the government announcement, w e called around to different media outlets and earned a plug in the L.A. Times story about the drought. That paper has a readership of 11 million people, so up to 11 million people could have seen the video.

We also work with state water contractors who operate throughout the state of California to ensure that residents’ taps stay flowing. They serve around 27 million people, which equates to 2/3rds of the state. We shared the video with them, and they shared the video within their service territory. Over time, around 2/3rds of the state will have the opportunity to see this video.

For the agricultural use video, they sent it out to a targeted stakeholder list. There were about 200 people on the list, including elected officials, organization presidents, and leaders in water management and decision making. In other words, they have influence over the politics and policies governing water. We sent the video to all of them, and out of the 200 on the list, 116 clicked on it and viewed it. Our video drove key decision makers back to our website, content, and material. The videos are invaluable.

How did The Draw Shop, LLC perform from a project management standpoint?

I’ve been very pleased in this regard. I’ve already spoken to how they’re with us every step of the way, but beyond that, they’re always communicating the project’s status.

We communicate over Basecamp. Not only does it hold everyone accountable to what they’re assigned to do, but it gives us as the client transparency into what they’re doing. I’m constantly getting updates about entries they make. Things can become siloed in email communication, but everyone has vision into what’s going on through Basecamp.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What I love about them is that they can take our guidance, as well as develop a full-baked idea alongside us. Sometimes we know exactly what to say and what images to use; we have something in our head for what the final product should look like. When we don’t, however, The Draw Shop is able to step in and form what the end product should look like, guiding us through each step.

If anything, it’s the collaborative nature of their work process because it allows them to see your vision through to completion. The pairing with a narrator is also very interesting. I didn’t realize the breadth of voice work that could be leveraged by a narrator in the videos we were doing, as well as the different effects those voices could have on the tone and tenor of the piece. Hitting the right tone is important for us, as we’re trying to educate people.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t think there’s any way that they could improve on what they’re already doing. I believe that they could add new services that would increase their value, but that’s not their current business model. For example, they could offer translation services and produce videos in multiple languages, as that would add a lot of value. Oftentimes, we don’t need to only communicate in English.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Really take your time and thoughtfully fill out their brand and art briefs. It helps The Draw Shop give you the best possible product. Moving through the process, I would advise thinking carefully and critically about who you want to choose as a narrator. Listen to the full reel and don’t be afraid to ask them questions.
