Brand logo recognition for real-time social media monitoring

Client: UnamoX

UnamoX helps clients optimize activity across social media. The SaaS business improves SEO and social media performance via a dedicated analytics suite that monitors user activity across Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter.

About the project:

UnamoX contacted DLabs looking to extend the paid feature set of its

social media monitoring tool. DLabs created an algorithm that recognized brand logos in any online image so that UnamoX clients can monitor brand reach and engagement, then contact influencers without an excessive investment of time or money. The system works with 60% accuracy, which makes it the most effective algorithm of its type.

Problem:

Brands have no way of knowing when their logo appears in images online. Worse, few brands own enough data to train an algorithm to recognize their logo, making it overly expensive to build an automated logo detection solution.

Solution:

An algorithm that can detect a logo in an image (while becoming increasingly accurate as it analyzes more data). Plus, a tool to generate synthetic data to train the algorithm in the first instance.

Results:

Together, the synthetic data generator and the logo detection algorithm have become the most accurate logo detection tools on the market today.

Project duration: 6 months

Image Search And Mapping

Computer vision helps us to find patterns in images. The human eye is adapted to recognize shapes, colors, and everyday objects. But the eye is an organ that gets tired, damaged, and aged. Artificial intelligence algorithms are different. They can learn whatever we want them to learn. And they can analyze data in ways humans cannot. Using computer vision, we can remove the limits that nature imposes. We can explore an

image to find people, objects, texts, logos, food, animals — the list is endless.

The project:

If you want to solve a problem using computer vision, you must first collect data. The process includes specifying what you want to find in your images and what you want to do with that information. When you have collected enough data, our data science and machine learning experts can help you prepare it for use with computer vision, using it to train algorithms that allow you to achieve your business goals. We have experience with tasks like brand logo detection and background removal. But for you, we can create any custom solution.

Technologies used:

  • TensorFlow

  • PyTorch

  • OpenCV

Possibilities

In truth, you can apply computer vision to every industry. In medicine, you can use it for lesion detection and diagnosis support; in food production, it can help with quality control on production lines; elsewhere, it’s useful for waste segregation, finding text in images, you get the idea.

Automated Invoice Reconciliation Platform

Client: Nordic Service

Nordic Service offers a platform that identifies and classifies tax documents — primarily invoices — and reconciles them as part of the accounting process. This supports actions like management accounts and codes as well as other financial decisions.

Project: Invoice reconciliation

DLabs designed and developed a platform that automates the process of

invoice reconciliation. The tool removed the manual effort involved in classifying invoices, helping the accounting department better track costs.

Problem:

Nordic Services had to classify over 20,000 invoices manually, primarily to help with accounting and support with decision-making.

Solution:

Automatic invoice classification streamlined a repetitive business process, enhancing output by using advanced machine learning algorithms.

Results:

The tool auto-classified over 83% of all invoices, significantly reducing the manual overhead of a time-consuming task.

Project duration: 5 months

Video background removal

One of the more challenging tasks in computer vision is background removal in a real-life video. However, doing so offers many benefits, especially in marketing. Background removal is widely used in marketing, newscasting, motion picture, and video gaming — among countless other industries.

About the

project:

Our team created software that removes the original background in real-time video, replacing it with an image, GIF, or another video. The software can detect a person in the frame, classify a foreground object as a person, and then detect other items in the background. The algorithm works with any background: it does not need to be a specific color or have special lighting.

Possibilities:

Our solution not only enables useful features for video conferencing platforms. It unlocks possibilities in gaming and on social media apps. The software also lets companies use a logo, branded image, or video as a background, enhancing brand recognition during, say, a product demo, ultimately making a better impression on the viewer.

It also works in non-commercial contexts. Say, if a user didn’t want to show the interior of their home — or if someone wanted to use a different or amusing background.

See the software in action: watch a short video to see how it automatically removes the background.

Client: Taxando

Taxando helps businesses and agencies file tax returns more efficiently. The platform extracts data straight from payroll, helping streamline a process that used to waste hundreds of hours-a-year.

Project: Simpler tax returns

Using machine learning and neural networks, DLabs helped Taxando reduce the time taken on this mundane task from 5 minutes down to a

few seconds.  Now, it's possible for any business to file a tax return in just 13 seconds with 93% accuracy: an uptick thats increased revenues at the tax office by a significant. percentage every year.

Problem:

Completing a tax return is a laborious, mundane task. It can take a business up to half an hour or more when a human has to fill out forms manually.

Solution:

An AI solution sped up filing a return by automating all manual inputs. Businesses use the tool to extract data from their tax cards, then upload it online, while they can liaise with the tax office via an efficient, digital-first process.

Results:

The new Taxando platform takes care of end-to-end tax filing: from extracting data from the tax card OCR to sending the detail to the IRS — a process that once took 30 minutes now takes just 30 seconds.

Mobile app for people with 1 type diabetes Image

Mobile app for people with 1 type diabetes

Who:

DiabetesLab is a Polish MedTech offers an application that supports people with type 1 diabetes, helping them maintain stable blood glucose levels. The app specifically targets people who lead an active lifestyle — but it’s equally useful for any person with type 1 diabetes who wants to improve their health and well-being. DLabs worked as a technical partner, taking

responsibility for designing and developing the application up to the MVP stage in preparation for beta testing. The problem:

Studies estimate that 415 million people worldwide have diabetes It’s very costly to treat diabetes. In 2018, the Polish National Health Fund spent 1.45 billion PLN delivering medication and testing slips to patients. At the same time, patients had to cover the additional treatment costs of 442 million PLN using personal funds.

A diabetes diagnosis is a life-changing moment for anyone, not least for those who are physically active. Diabetes has a drastic influence on lifestyle, and for anyone who’s newly diagnosed, it can be hard to adjust, confusing to plan a new diet, and stressful to manage the illness.

The solution

Suguard is a comprehensive mobile application that uses state-of-the-art AI to personalize diabetic therapy and help patients in their everyday management of this chronic disease. It aims to predict and recommend actions to stabilize blood glucose levels, decreasing the risk of complications, thus reducing treatment costs.

The solution most benefits people who have type 1 diabetes: an illness that requires more intensive treatment and an exceptional level of personal care — in particular, during high-intensity physical activity.

Technologies used:

  • JavaScript
  • React Native

Effectiveness:

Suguard offers 90% efficiency in predicting actions that effectively stabilize blood glucose levels, decreasing the risk of complications while helping users choose the right foods, activities, and medicines.

Project:

Dashboard

DLabs built a web application dashboard that presents data from online marketing campaigns run on different platforms (inc. Facebook, Google AdWords, BDM, Adfrom). The tool helps simplify reporting for BidLab clients.

Problem:

There was too much manual effort in preparing settlements for clients.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm a data scientist at DrivenData, an organization that runs predictive modeling competitions in which data scientists from around the world compete on data problems with a social impact.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with DLabs?

We reached out to DLabs for data cleaning and preparation, exploratory data analysis, machine learning, and content development services helping us get several competitions from just an idea to being fully prepped and ready to launch.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

DLabs's data scientists helped us get ready for two competitions, taking our loosely sketched ideas and a data set. They cleaned and prepared the data, did some exploratory analysis, framed a predictive modeling question, and then benchmarked the performance of several different machine learning approaches. They also developed the participant-focused content,  providing context and motivation as well as setting up the technical problem statement and explanation of data and performance metric. Components of the work included writing content, machine learning, and visualization in order to make sure they could convey to our team what the expected performance was for learners and confirm that the problem was difficult but feasible.

There was some ambiguity in the beginning, so they had to figure out and choose a more specific direction to take with the predictive challenge.

What is the team composition?

We primarily work with a principal and a data scientist on their team.

How did you come to work with DLabs?

I'd been in communication with their founding team for a while before reaching out to them for this project. They've worked on other projects that use similar technical stacks, so they were a natural fit.

How much have you invested with them?

The first project was about $3,000, the second was $5,000, and the current project we're working on is $20,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working on the most recent project in February 2018 and completed it within a month. We're now working with them on a longer software development project that should take about six months.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We've been very happy with the quality of their work. We've had an unusually low level of support requests for each project they've worked on, meaning people are having fewer issues understanding what they're supposed to do because the data set was properly prepared and the content was extremely clear.

How did DLabs perform from a project management standpoint?

They're great at flagging questions for us, reaching out whenever they need clarity on something and bringing up key issues during our check-ins. They primarily communicate with us through email, video calls, Slack, and GitHub.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They're extremely responsive and their management team is very involved. They also invest a lot in modern technology and software development best practices, so they continue to be great to collaborate with.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can't think of anything.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

They have a talented software engineers and also experienced data scientists on their team, which is pretty rare. It especially makes sense to work with them on projects that could benefit from involves both skillsets.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I'm an associate at Alfabeat, an early-stage venture capital firm that’s investing in B2B software companies. I’m responsible for launching AI projects with our portfolio companies.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire DLabs Sp. z o.o.?

We hired them to develop custom AI algorithms for our portfolio company.

What were your goals for this project?

Our goal was to recognize patterns on real images. Since the data pool was not big enough for AI image analysis, another algorithm had to generate synthetic data first.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We hired DLabs Sp. z o.o. because of their experience in working with synthetic data and image analysis. Since their office was close to ours, cooperation would be easier.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

DLabs Sp. z o.o. developed a set of custom algorithms. The first algorithm generated synthetic photos based on an image sent, while the second was trained to recognize patterns on the photos based on the synthetic pool of data.

What was the team composition?

We worked with machine learning engineers, data scientists, and 1–2 developers.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

Their work gained a competitive edge for our portfolio company.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

Our business offers enhanced social listening and media monitoring tools. One of our tools aggregates various documents and makes it possible to analyze them.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire DLabs Sp. z o.o.?

We reached out to DLabs to help us determine if a statistically significant relationship exists between user engagement expressed as a document’s popularity on social media and the semantic and syntactic features derived from that document.

What were your goals for this project?

Our goal was to have DLabs's data scientists help us prepare a text corpus including over 600 thousand documents written in Polish. The documents were from several different sources and included metadata about popularity.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We selected them based on recommendations.

Describe the project in detail.

They derived statistical, semantic, and syntactic features and performed an analysis of the statistical relationship between these features and different popularity descriptors available in the document’s metadata. Additionally, they used advanced machine learning techniques to train models to classify popular documents.

What was the team composition?

We worked with a data scientist, a machine learning engineer, and a backend engineer.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

DLabs obtained very promising results.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The workflow was smooth and close to perfection.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They took a professional approach to cooperation and provided great feedback.

Are there any areas for improvement?

The partnership was so great that I can’t expect any improvement.
